Subject: When Did Historians really start Classifying Decades?

Written By: Trimac20 on 05/21/06 at 9:17 am

I thought the whole 'decade' thing was a 20th century thing, but when reading old books.etc, they always talk about the '60s' as in the 1860s. Do you think the decades in the 19th century were really very different to one another? I.e. was 1870 much of a change from 1860? (of course not as big as 1960-70). Just seemed interesting to me.

Oh yeah, every decade in the 19th century was sort of different.

Yeah, I think the 19th century was the first century where world events/politics/religion/society.etc moved fast enough to change noticeably from decade to decade.

Are there any hints from poetry from the past?

I don't think you'll find much in old poets...poets speak another language from historians. Indeed, logic is a poor language to unravel the puzzles of the poets.

Would anyone say the 1800s were the first "modern" decade?

The Industrial Revolution is considered the start of the 'modern' age.
