Subject: The "Woodstock" that is important to me...

You hear "Woodstock," you most likely think of the free rock music festival in August, 1969. The one with all those pop culture icons and all the hippies in the mud tripping on acid. It is lauded as the apex of the rock 'n' roll flower child peace revolution, and the musical legacy defined all that is great to rock critics for a generation to come. Great. But that's not what I think of when I hear "Woodstock."
The real musical revolution at Woodstock, NY, happened on August 29th, 1952, at Maverick Concert Hall.
The greatest musical advancement of the century debuted that night. The composer John Cage wrote the piece and the pianist David Tudor performed it. It was performed as intended--not one note was played.
The audience went crazy---they hated it!
The piece I speak of is, of course, John Cage's 4'33" in four movements, all of them silent.
"Thirty years later, they're still angry," Cage remarked in the early '80s.
but
To me, the introduction of 4"33" to music was as important as the introduction of the number 0 to mathematics.

When I think of "Woodstock" (other than the 69 concert), I do think of Woodstock, NY-specifically the Woodstock Playhouse because I once did a play there back in the dark ages. It was called "The Woodstock Way" :D But, I did hear that the old playhouse burnt down. :\'(
