Star Trek first premiered on Sept. 8th, 1966

(well apparently the show, That Girl starring Marlo Thomas and Ted Bessel premiered too, but I like Star Trek far better)

Congratulations Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Scotty, Sulu, Uhuura, Dr. McCoy (Bones),  and Chekov for becoming household names and having thousands of fans worldwide.

Star Trekkin' across the universe,
On the Starship Enterprise under Captain Kirk.
Star Trekkin' across the universe,
Only going forward 'cause we can't find reverse.

Lt. Uhura, report.
There's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow;
there's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, Jim.

Analysis, Mr. Spock.
It's life, Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, not as we know it;
it's life, Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, Captain.

There's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow;
there's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, Jim.

Star Trekkin' across the universe,
On the Starship Enterprise under Captain Kirk.
Star Trekkin' across the universe,
Only going forward, still can't find reverse.

Medical update, Dr. McCoy.
It's worse than that, he's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead, Jim;
it's worse than that, he's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead.

It's life, Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, not as we know it;
it's life, Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, Captain.

There's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow;
there's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, Jim.

Starship Captain, James T. Kirk:
Ah! We come in peace, shoot to kill, shoot to kill, shoot to kill;
we come in peace, shoot to kill, shoot to kill, men.

It's worse than that, he's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead, Jim;
it's worse than that, he's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead.

Well, it's life, Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, not as we know it;
it's life, Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, Captain.

There's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow;
there's Klingons on the starboard bow, scrape 'em off, Jim.

Star Trekkin' across the universe,
On the Starship Enterprise under Captain Kirk.
Star Trekkin' across the universe,
Only going forward, and things are getting worse!

Engineer, Mr. Scott:
Ye cannot change the laws of physics, laws of physics, laws of physics;
ye cannot cahnge the laws of physics, laws of physics, Jim.

Ah! We come in peace, shoot to kill, shoot to kill, shoot to kill;
we come in peace, shoot to kill; Scotty, beam me up!

It's worse than that, he's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead, Jim;
it's worse than that, he's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead.

Well, it's life, Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, not as we know it;
it's life, Jim, but not as we know it, not as we know it, Captain.

There's Klingons on the starboard bow, starboard bow, starboard bow;
there's Klingons on the starboard bow, better calm down!

Ye cannot change the script Jim.
Och, #!*& Jimmy.

It's worse than that, it's physics, Jim.

Bridge to engine room, warp factor 9.

Och, if I give it any more she'll blow, Cap'n!

Star Trekkin' across the universe,
On the Starship Enterprise under Captain Kirk.
Star Trekkin' across the universe,
Only going forward 'cause we can't find reverse.

Star Trekkin' across the universe,
On the Starship Enterprise under Captain Kirk.
Star Trekkin' across the universe,
Only going forward, still can't find reverse.

Star Trek first premiered on Sept. 8th, 1966

(Various bridge noises, warp engines spooling up, guitar solo)

It was 40 years from yesterday,
Roddenberry taught the crew to play,
They've been going in and out of style,
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile,
So may I introduce to you,
The act you've known for all these years,
Roddenberry's Trekker Geek Filk Band!

We're Roddenberry's Trekker Geek Filk Band!
We hope you will enjoy the show
We're Roddenberry's Trekker Geek Filk Band!
Sit back and let the evening go,
Majel Barrett's lonely, anything but homely,
Doc McCoy feels bonely, geek filk band!

It's wonderful to be here,
It's certainly a thrill,
You're such a lovely audience
We'd like to take you home with us,
Our mother's basement home!

I don't really want to stop the show,
But I thought that you might like to know,
That the singer's going to sing a song,
And he wants you all to sing along,
So let me introduce to you,
The one and only Bill-T-Kirk,
Rodden-berry's-Trekker-Geek-Filk-Band!

U know what's weird?  This Original Star Trek series was the least successful of all live action Star Trek series ever produced, running for only 3 seasons.  The Star Trek animated series is the least successful as it only ran for 2 seasons

I thought the pilot was called "The Cage"-without Kirk but had Capt Pike at the helm. And Majal Barrett (Mrs. Roddenbury-AKA Nurse Chapel, Mrs. Troi, the voice of the computer, etc.) as "Number One". The execs didn't like the fact that woman could be First Mate so it was rewritten with Spock as First Mate.

I remember my dad and brother watching Star Trek all the time and I used to say, "Yuck" and leave the room. Now, I'm sure I have seen every episode I don't know how many times. And yeah, I guess I am a bit of a closet case "Trekkie".

I was 7 in '66 and....I don't remember StarTrek starting up -- it seems like it was just always part of life.

(I remember "That Girl" too and I liked that show).

Heh- I used to love it and watch it religously...as a kid.  Now I can't take it.  I LOVE lots of goofy retro stuff, but for some reason some things are too dated for me to pay attention ...  wish I di like it more.. I love the fight scenes.  Just can't get through all that Kirk long enough to see one.

That was the original pilot.  There were several problems with it, so NBC sent it back to be reworked.

And the problem was not as much that there was a female as First Officer, as much as Majel Barrett was Gene's girlfriend.  They did not want her to have such a prominant role, fearing for both charges of nepotism, and what would happen if they broke up, and the hole she might leve in the show.

They also had problems with "Captain Pike", fearing he was to old to attract the younger audience they were trying to get.  Also there were comments made on how "wooden" Leonard Nimoy's performance was.  Part of the re-write included having Spock stripped of all emotions, which made his wooden performance part of the character (a trait that Lenoard lost as he got more experience).

The show was eventually cut up and made into "The Menagerie", the only 2 part show in the original series.
