Subject: Itsy Bikini songwriter Vance dies

Written By: Philip Eno on 09/27/06 at 9:35 am

Paul Vance, co-writer of hit 1960 song Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, has died at the age of 68.

Recorded by 16-year-old teen idol Brian Hyland, the novelty song topped the US charts in August 1960 and has since achieved cult status.

Vance and his songwriting partner Lee Pockriss also co-wrote Catch a Falling Star, a hit for Perry Como in 1958.

He died at his home in Florida earlier this month after a battle with lung cancer, the Associated Press reports.

Born Paul Van Valkenburgh, Vance never enjoyed the fruits of his song's subsequent renown, having sold away the rights as a young man.

It is sad that he died and all, but I don't think someone should become famous for writing just one song - a one hit wonder, if you like. Let alone a song like that.

Well, it looks as if the boys from Associated Press got it wrong...

He's not the first...for many years, George ('Rock Your Baby') McCrae was reported to have died from cancer in 1986...

...and Jane Morgan (who had a British #1 with 'The Day The Rains Came' in 1959) is also reckoned to have fallen off her perch in 1974...

...both are still alive and well  :)
