Subject: Clothing Styles Pre-1950s

Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 03/16/07 at 4:03 am

I don't know about you folks, but I always had a thing for some of the clothes from back in the 1920s-1940s.

One of my favorite examples is the Zoot Suit.
I loved the way those were made!

Anyone have a mention, on this?

I have always thought that it would be awesome to transform my wardrobe to that of an earlier time. Gosh, I loved how they dressed anytime earlier than the 60's or so...so very classy.  Of course, I would like to get my figure a bit more svelte before doing so.....but yes, I love the look of retro/vintage clothing.

I love the styles from the 1920's, I could totally see myself as a Flapper...

Oh, I love those pics! Those styles were awesome. Oh, and hats! It seems like it was just a given that when they went out they would wear a hat.

Even in the 50's and early 60's women wore hats all the time especially to church.  An outfit wasn't complete unless they had a hat to go with it.

My grandmother was a Flapper.  I have so many photos of her wearing hats like the one in the last photo.  She looked like a movie-star.

I've always thought fedoras were cool and sometimes I wish I could wear one in public, but unfortunately in this day and age it's almost impossible to wear one without looking like a pretentious jerk.

One of the guys here wears a fedora occasionally. I must admit, I rather like it, though like you I don't think I personally would deign to wear one regularly if I actually owned one. It's definitely one of the cooler male hats around, though.

Not sure who you are talking about, but I like fedoras, also.

In fact, I have a black one.
I originally got it as part of a "Blues Brothers" costume idea, but the porkpie itself is quite nice, and I have worn it on several occasions, usually to formal functions.
It has been suggested that when the band gets our promo pics done, I wear it.
Dunno about that.....

Gloves, too.  When I was little it was still mandatory when going to church to have a hat and gloves, even at age 5.  I can remember before panty hose.  When panty hose came in my father was appalled because the didn't have a seam and people would think we were "bare-legged". You had to wear a garter belt, and keep the seam straight. It actually took a bit of doing to convince him that they were perfectly respectable.  Of course later he didn't like to see a stocking with seams because it meant you were wearing a garter belt, and that has become as risque as being "bare-legged" was.  ::)

The only time we wore gloves to church was on the day of our Holy Communion and Easter Sunday.

We also had to wear a hat in church.  Famales had to have their heads covered, males had to remove their hats.  Sunday church was a very formal affair, dresses, hats, gloves for the ladies, suits and ties for the gents.
