Subject: Project from 50s-70s
Written By: Christy on 05/01/07 at 9:23 pm
Hi There,
Well I'm doing a project in English class and we have to decorate the classroom. Our idea was a diner, and we got the red and white checkered table cloths. I was thinking since we spanned such a time period that I should have records and movie clips from shows set in that time period. Any suggestion on outfits that fit into this time period... anything would be great but I'm hoping I can find something lying around at home to suit.
Also, we are supposed to make the room smell like the time period... any specific smells....
oh and last but not least... favourite foods... what was the big deal back then? (my group was assuming french fries... but i figured that would be something more realistic)
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP!!!
-Christy-

Is the TV show Happy Days out on DVD ? - if you rent that you would get a good idea of a 50s diner and the clothes and music of the time. Actually there is a great one in the film Grease too.
Black and white posters of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey Bogart.
Poodle Skirts.
Rolled up jeans.
Ducks Ass Hair on the boys.
Milkshakes in glass, hamburgers, fries.

Roller skates, not roller blades, carhops were a big thing in the 50's and 60's; some carhops made to the 70's
but not many. Rootbeer floats are a must. ;D

I hate to say this but your project really covers two different and distinct eras. There's the "golly swell" era between WW2 and Kennedy's assasination (Mid 1940's to Early 60's) and the "Cultural Revolution" (Mid 60's to late 70's) of woodstock, Vietnam, protests, and free love which ended with the Reagan era.
I don't mean to nick pick but 1955 was a totally different world than 1970

If you lived in China during the 60s,the Cultural revolution was a lot worse.
