Subject: "Choke" Along With The Flintstones

Written By: malibumike65 on 03/28/08 at 9:11 am

My, how times have changed. On "The Simpsons", Marges sisters' Patty and Selma may be smokers, but "The Flintstones" takes it one step further by actually promoting Winstons on air. Also thrown into the mix is some chauvinistic behavior by Fred & Barney while watching Wilma and Betty doing chores. In todays world of Political Correctness, this just seems wrong. I know it was an adult cartoon back in the day, but kids did watch too. But I did get a kick at the end when we get a look at the precursor of the end gag that ran on the syndicated episodes. Instead of the cat jumping in back through the window, and carrying Fred out and locking the door, the kitty just runs by Fred and closes the door.

I've seen it.

And some people think Fred and Barney are gay.

Yeah, the ciggy commercials are included on the DVD.  It's just "not right" seeing that, ya know?  Fred & Barney, out in back, chillin' with a cowboy killer...

Nah, I don't think they're gay, just good friends...

Many people of today's generation find hard to believe that cartoon characters were hawking cigarettes.
It was the 60's and smoking was glamorous, for those of us who remember, there were no warnings on
cigarette packs then. Hell, as an 8 year old, my Mom would send me to the store to buy her cigarettes.
Some stores even sold singles.

The Flintstones wasn't the only cartoon involving smoking. Does anyone remember Tobor The 8th Man,
he smoked "cigarettes" to help his brain clear when he was overloaded (he kept them behind his belt buckle).  ;)

I wish I would've been around before smoking was bad for you.
