I guess this thread is a spinoff from the 70's thread "sweetest classic rock tunes"

The Yardbirds - For Your Love

The Rolling Stones -- Paint It Black
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DP2VyquMAaM&feature=related  looks like an awesome concert

Georgie Fame is British.  'Get Away' topped the UK and Canada chart in 1966.  I dont remember how successful it was Stateside, but I do believe it fell outside of the Top 40 :(

That trombone solo is indeed awesome 8)

Lots of great ones, too many to list, but one I've listened to recently and will always love:

Perhaps the greatest love song ever written and sung... by Etta James. Sea lion Demon should have have left it alone.

I agree that there are too many to list.  I think the 60's has one of the largest selections of hits, there are so many good songs.

And from Aus the following year...Russell Morris

Still a very good song tho'...

Here are a few songs from the 60's which I think are cool...

'Five O'Clock World' by The Vogues (This song is very 'bouncy' and always makes me happy when I hear it!)
'San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)' by Scott McKenzie (Another great 'feel good' song!)
'Get Together' by The Youngbloods

No complaints with the first two, but 'Get Together'...hm, I dunno...I do like it, but it lacks a little something compared to the others...

You can't go far wrong with anything from this lot...

Definitive! The Shirelles' version was insipid in comparison!

Just a thing...what has Denny got on his head?  ???

Two of the coolest songs of the 60s came courtesy of a legendary band of Canadians:

Born to Be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf

John Kay still tours as "John Kay and Steppenwolf" across North America, mostly within Canada where they were most successful in their heyday.  They come around here several times, but I've never been to see.

Unfortunately, no, I haven't found it on mp3 as of yet.

Another rather obscure band:

They sure came up with some great band names back then, didn't they?  ;)

Good song, BTW.

wow Kevin, that's a long time ago. you gotta post a pic of your Torino if you have any. I'm sure you had an 8 track

Capital Gold in London used to play it nearly every day, until the station became an unadventurous damp squib and wouldn't (and still doesn't) play anything prior to 1978... :-\\

never heard of any of these, but the Ultimate Spinach song is freaking amazing!   Do you know where i can get it on mp3

FYI: Both Group 1850 and The Outsiders are Dutch. Leadsinger Wally Tax of the Outsiders also had a solo career.

From Group 1850: their only charting single in Dutch Top 40 was Mother No-Head (1967), a psychedelic take on the children's song "Brother John".

"Lying all the time" by The Outsiders reached #10 in Dutch Top 40; it was one the bands five Top 10 hits in 1966/1967. Too bad I can't find the other four on YouTube.

I was too young in the 1960's to really appreciate the music, but I've discovered later that some excellent music was made in that era.
Brainbox is a good example, a band that should've gotten more exposure abroad IMHO. Don't know why they never made it.
My personal favorite is this one: Woman's Gone. Not a hit, but that's some blues brother! 8)

Interesting choice of songs there, btw. "The Sunshine Of Your Shadow" was just about the band's only song that didn't make Top 40, and "Sorry She's Mine" spent one whole week at #40 position...
"Summertime" peaked at #16 - not the band's biggest hit (that was "Down Man"), but a hit nontheless.

The Cats, Tee Set, Bintangs... all big bands at the time over here, especially The Cats, with 10 Top 40 hits in the 1960's and another 20 in the 1970's.

Two words: Golden Earring(s).

Back in the days when they were still relatively unkown, with singer Frans Krassenburg.

That Day (1966, #2)
Daddy Buy Me A Girl (1966, #12)
Sound Of The Screaming Day (1967, #4)

And then Barry Hay took his place...

I've Just Lost Somebody (1968, #7)
Dong-Dong-Di-Ki-Di-Gi-Dong (1968, #1)
Just A Little Bit Of Peace In My Heart (1968, #2)
Another 45 Miles (1969, #3 / 1993, #25)

And now for something completely different:

Twice As Much - True Story (1966, #13)

Well, what a nice bunch of lads! At least Mr. Welk seems to think so. ::)

I don't know why but I love the goofy 60's choreography.

Check out how the guy in the middle keeps lifting the neck of his bass up when he turns so he won't clobber Hank Marvin (the guy on the right in the glasses).   :D

Its from the musical Hair
It was recorded by The Fifth Dimension its called Aquarius/ Let the Sunshine in. At least that is the version that was wildy popular hrer in the U.S. in 1968

My coolest 60s song would be Time has Come Today By The Chambers Brothers. Aside from anything Moody Blues that is.

It would never happen today, but when it was first released (in '69 no less!  ;)), the record company that issued it actually bowed to pressure from some quarters and deleted it from their catalogue when it reached #2 in the British chart!  :o

Luckily, an 'independent' label (with no such morals!) picked up the licence and the song eventually hit the top (probably from its reputation, as the BBC wouldn't go anywhere near it!)

As far as I'm aware, it's the only instance where two issues of the same song by the same artist were in the Top 10 together! Crazy!

I LOVE the song "Windmills of Your Mind" but IMO, Dusty didn't do a good job on it. Hubby loves the way Johnny Mathis did it (which I have yet to hear) and I'm kind of partial to Ed Ames version of it (Yeah, yeah I know-but my mother LOVED Ed Ames & she had EVERY record he made-but that one I liked). Here is a good version of it with Noel Harrison.

Certainly a high-water mark in psych from any country, but sadly a year or two too late!  :-\\

Such is its high regard, that psych collectors will pay a small fortune for an original British copy (it stiffed here, unsurprisingly!)

And one can only imagine how incredible this would have been were it recorded in stereo!

The groovy organ and bass line and propulsive, slamming drum beat already makes this song a winner, but what makes it truly killer is that it has one of the best lines ever in rock n' roll: "Ain't good lookin but you know I ain't shy, ain't afraid to look a girl right in the eye."

No joke, my brothers and sisters had a bunch of old 45's and this single was included in them.

I always thought the spoken word/spy music intro was funny and this record is one of the big reasons why I've always been fascinated with the 1960's.

This last week I went on a run (I'm a long-distance truck driver) out to the Bay Area (Oakland, specifically) for the first time in 15 years. It was awesome and I wish I'd had a car so I could have actually done some exploring.

Indeed, you may want to save up all your bread and fly Trans-Love Airways to San Francisco, USA.

It will be worth it.  ;)

I didn't have a hard time with it and to me it was mind-expanding, literally mind-expanding.

Absolutely LOVE this song.

Saw them in concert a few years ago. Yeah, they are still singing/touring only they call themselves the Rascals now instead of the YOUNG Rascals-because they are not-so young anymore.  :D ;D ;D ;D

I saw them in concert, too. It was my first concert at an amusement park. I remember after we left the park, we stopped at a restaurant for dinner. As we left the restaurant and were walking to the car, they pulled in and went into the restaurant. We were so psyched to be THIS close to them. After they went into the restaurant, I remember walking over to their van and touching it (putting my fingerprint in the dirt on the van) and saying, "OOOH! I touched the Cowsill's van!"  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  You have to remember that I was only about 8 or 9 at the time.

OK, so I've been listening to SiriusXM a lot while I've been driving over-the-road, and one of the channels I listen to a lot is The 60's On 6.  They play this song fairly often on this station and apparently it was a moderate hit back then, yet I had never heard of it before I got satellite radio. I've never heard it on any terrestrial oldies stations, nor do I ever remember hearing it on the MOR AM station out of Omaha that my folks listened to when I was a kid. Here it is:

The Critters - Mr. Dieingly Sad (1966)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-6khXfUK3M

It's not a bad song, rather pleasant actually, but I find it odd that I'd never heard it before. For those of you who were around back then, do you remember hearing this song? Was it actually a hit back in 1966?  ???

I find that is quite common with songs of that age if it was a band that just had 1 hit or very few hits.  The Critters were very short lived, charting just 4 songs in the US Hot 100 over a 2 year period ...

1966 - Younger Girl
1966 - Mr. Dieingly Sad
1966 - Bad Misunderstanding
1967 - Don't Let the Rain Fall Down on Me

Here's one from 1960 called Handyman by Jimmy Jones

John Lennon originally wanted to title the song "Maharishi" but changed the title to "Sexy Sadie" at George Harrison's request.

Heh! The rest of Lennon's original lyric would never have gotten past the other three either! (wiki 'Sexy Sadie' for the gory details!)

The Choir ~ It's Cold Outside

Does anyone know this one?

Yes, I know it from that aforementioned box set! Excellent stuff! (That image on the video is of the original British release - worth a tidy sum!)

Garage rock, or power pop? Well, considering three-fifths of the group went on to form The Raspberries, I'd go for the latter!
