Subject: I love Janis Joplin!

Written By: 80sfan on 10/01/08 at 10:54 pm

I don't care what anybody says, this girl can sing! She is so underappreciated and her music is soulful. Even if you're not into her music, you can't deny she's an amazing song writier and singer. She is irreplaceable.

I heard she was picked on in highschool, but grew up to be famous. Man, I bet that was sweet revenge for her. She was so troubled though. She's like a female Jimi Hendrix to me.

Long live Janis Joplin.

I love her too, she was great, I loved her bluesy voice, I think she is only topped by Billie Holiday. i named my dog after her Pearl.

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?

Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?

Everybody!
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

That’s it!

I think she was re-born in Dana Fuchs, pull her up on My Space and listen to her sing and fall in love all over again with Janis...only better. Listen to her song "Misery" and you'll see.

I always had a feeling that maybe Melissa Ethridge was influenced by Janis Joplin

Weird. I was just talking to my friend about this today. When she was at the University of Texas, to mock her, students voted her "Ugliest Man on Campus". Heartless jerks. She really showed them. She is a legend. I love her music. I could listen to Cheap Thrills all day.

I went through a Janis phase awhile back, the sheer (or mere) intensity of her voice carried you into another dimension of expression; her own influences, like Big Mama Thornton and Odette should not be forgotten either. But in some ways she carried those influences into another territory. It's common to group her in with the 'big three': Hendrix and Morrison being the others, but she deserves more attention.

To be honest I'm not all that big of a fan of Janis Joplin, but I've often thought that had she lived she could have easily evolved into a great hard rock/heavy metal singer.

But who would she have collaborated with?

I think her being bullied during her youth made her insecure. I just wished she didn't try to escape her pain too much, maybe get a counselor.
Or read a good self-help book. But maybe that wasn't her style.  :D
