Subject: The tambourine defnately "dates" a pop song to the '60s

Written By: yelimsexa on 06/06/11 at 8:46 pm

Have you noticed if you listen to rock/pop songs who the '60s seems to have more tambourine use than other decades?

Lots of Motown, songs like "Reach Out Of The Darkness", "Bits and Pieces", "Time Won't Let" just to name a few. It seems like that instrument seems to "date stamp" the '60s just like the saxophone did for the '50s, the wah pedal/funk sound (Such as in the song "Night Fever" did for the '70s, the gated reverb drum for the '80s, and for the '00s/'10s, the ProTools drum tick and "fast woosh" sounds. I'd say that nearly half of all songs between 1964 and 1968 or so made use of this sound effect. It gradually rose in popularity in the early '60s and by 1972 pretty much was a thing of the past.  I just can't think of any other time period in pop music history where the tambourine is a dominant part of the pop music landscape.

Tambourine was popular throughout the 70's, then into the 80's.  But I agree, the period from the mid-60's through the early 70's, was probably the tambourine's most popular decade.

Tambourines and handclaps can definitely get a song moving along.  8)

Another signature sound of the 60's is the electric organ, starting from hits like the "Green Onion" to the more psychedelic songs. Speaking of which, does anyone know the name of the organ car chase theme from the Blues Brothers? Its not "shake your tailfeather" and I can't seem to find it on Youtube. Basically it goes dadit ta dad da da,yeah!

Here's a link to the soundtrack listing on imdb.com

from the list could it be Ride of the Valkyries?
