The soundtrack to the movie The Sound of Music was released as album in the United Kingdom in 1965. It reached number one in June of that year, and spent a total of 70 weeks at the top over several runs. It was the biggest-selling album in the UK during 1965, 1966 and 1968, and the second biggest-selling of the entire decade.

I've always thought these guys were a bit overrated, with a few exceptions (like "around the dial" and "destroyer"), but the revolution sparked by "you really got me" and the popularization of the power chord was a real bellwether in modern rock. i don't even know how or if the album charted, though i'd be shocked if "you really got me" didn't make #1 at some point.

Kinks...overrated...oh my my no no.  "You Really Got Me"  "Tired of Waiting" "Waterloo Sunset" "Sunny Afternoon" "Well Respected Man" "Set Me Free" just to mention a few.  The lyrics!  Ray Davies is a man of words.  LOVE THE KINKS!
