Subject: Habanera - funny version for kids - need help finding it

Written By: Liamdoug on 09/10/12 at 7:58 am

Hi All,

For years I've been searching for a recording I had as a kid in the 1950's - "La Habanera" from Bizet's Carmen with silly lyrics about a visit to Grandpa's farm. All I recall is part of the refrain: "The cow goes moo, the cat meow, the little dog goes bow-wow-wow-wow-wow.."

There were other fractured lyrics from other operas. I think another one was based on "Farandole" from Bizet's L'Arlesienne - all I recall was "Oy! Oy! Oy! The butcher is a goy!"

Any help finding a recording of the first one (La Habanera) would elicit my eternal gratitude.

The lyrics remind me of "Jollity farm" from the Bonzo Dog band.  It has "The cow goes moo, the cat meow, the little dog goes bow-wow-wow" within the song.  I know it's not Bizet's Carmen, but it's funny nevertheless.

Will try and think of the one you are looking for.

I don't think this is right, because it's from 1971 - but could it have been from Spike Jones Is Murdering The Classics? He had a 13-minute Carmen parody, although I don't remember a farm in it!
