Subject: First song to say f*ck

We tend to think of profanity in music as being a recent innovation, but truth is it's not so. This song actually sold thousands of copies.

You just gotta love dirty old jazz and blues songs. Karma!

Although the f-bomb isn't used here, it still doesn't get more direct than this.

The highest charted & most famous song with the f-word in it?

Probably "Hey Jude"
Although you can barely hear it, Paul says it (alledgedly) and John decided to leave it in the song. It's 2:57 or 2:58 into the song.

I always listen out for that each time I hear "Hey Jude" by The Beatles just incase one day it is editted out.

In the 1978 song "Who Are You" by the Who, you can clearly hear Roger Daltrey yell, "Ah, who the f**k are you?" twice (once at 2:18 and another at 5:43). I still hear this version on classic rock stations fairly often, and it's always been obvious to me that Daltrey is dropping the F-bomb, yet they've always gotten away with it and I've always wondered why.  ???

What he said.  I've heard this aired on FM radio for decades.  What's the scoop?

Oblig: Who Are You (The sneaky little F-bomb is present in this version of the ~5:04 mix at both 2:13 and 4:25).

Impossible to edit it out, as it's buried deep within the mix...

You could try and erase it, but it'd result in a noticeable 'jump' in the song...

You might have heard a song called "Love Potion Number 9" by a doo wop group called The Clovers.  A few years earlier -- 1954 -- they cut a record called "The Rotten C*cksuckers' Ball."  It ain't Lieber and Stoller for sure. It makes no bones about partying with hookers, and yeah, it says the f-word a few times.  It doesn't sound like much in the age of Snoop Dogg and Lil' John, but 1954 you'd be hauled away in cuffs and charged with obscenity and even your mama wouldn't post your bail!

Songs not really that old

Pink Floyd's "Not now John" (early 80s)

A 1977 Max Webster "Anti-war" song

They list this song on Wikipedia but somehow I just can't quite get rid of the suspicion that this is a hoax. If not, props to Harry Roy for having big, bold brass ones, 1930s style.

The Fenderman's "Mule Skinner Blues", I've listened to that song 1000 times over the past 50 years and I hear in the last lyric of the song and it sounds like " Hey waterboy, if you don't like your job you can go f*ck f*ck f*ck yourself HaHa!....HA HA HA HA HA HA!"

I just check the lyrics and it's written as" put your water bucket down", it doesn't sound that way as much as I listen to it, I think  it's written that way but sung another.

Sha Na Na's 1973 live album " The Golden Age of Rock and Roll" where at one point Bowser yells at the audience "I want to tell all you fu*ck'in hippies...rock and roll is here to stay" and then brake into that song. That's the first time I really can say hear it said on a record, it's clear as day.

People said the F word all the time in 1953!  You didn't say it in front of your parents or in polite company.  The F word was always censored in media printed, recorded, and broadcast.  Nonetheless, people said the F word just the same as the did the F word.

A record like this one or the Lucille Bogan record wouldn't be allowed on the radio.  Back then the FCC really did revoke licenses and impose fines for profanity.  You also wouldn't be allowed to sell records with swear words in your neighborhood.  You had to go to the record store on the funky side of town, and your wife better not find out you took the trolley over there!

I think the F word was considered discreet at that time.
