Subject: CANCON - Canadian Music of the 50s / 60s

Written By: whistledog on 02/07/13 at 10:18 pm

This one may be a little tricky.  Some good music came from this period :)

Gale Garnett - We'll Sing in the Sunshine (1964)

She was in actuality, born in New Zealand

------------------------

Bobby Curtola - Indian Giver (1963)

He was a Teen Idol in Canada.  He had many many hits here in his native land.  This one is my favourite

------------------------

Terry Black - Unless You Care (1964)

He was a Teen Idol in Canada, though not as popular as Mr. Curtola.  This was his only hit in the US as a solo artist, and it just barely made the US Hot 100.  In the 70s, he was a member of the band Dr. Music, who scored a Top 40 hit in Canada in 1972 called Sun Goes By.  He passed away in 2009

Chad Allan.  That's going way back!  Classic Canada!

Andy Kim, my birthday buddy (he was born the same day as me, but many years apart lol)

I don't know those Shirley Matthews songs, but they are not bad.

Chad Allan, yeah, before the days of Burton Cummings.

Andy Kim was better known for "Rock me gently", I think it was in 1974.

"Big town boy" was Shirley's big hit. I'm guessing it charted OK in Canada.

Rock Me Gently was fantastic.  He was also songwriter for many hits by The Archies in the 60s.  I know Andy Kim best when he was Baron Longfellow in the early 80s.  He had this beautiful ballad called 'Amour (Tu es ma papillon)' in 1980, and a nice little comeback hit under the name Longfellow in 1991 with 'Powerdrive'

Jack London and the Sparrows - If You Don't Want My Love (1964)
Following a name change to The Sparrows, then Sparrow, they eventually setted upon the name Steppenwolf.  It's actually because they were living in the US when they changed their name, that Steppenwolf never qualified for CANCON as a Canadian Artist

The Carlton Showband - The Merry Ploughboy (1966)

The Staccatos - Let's Run Away (1966)
This group was the original name for what would become Five Man Electrical Band
