Subject: So, how many 1930s teen girls actually tried to look like Judy Garland/ Dorothy?

Written By: The Valley Goth on 05/08/14 at 12:46 am

Like, Hi, Fer Shurr,

I think that Judy Garland probably became a style icon once she was cast as Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz".

So, how many 1930s teen girls tried to turn themselves into Judy Garland-types?  How many of you Depression Era teen girls tried to wear her hairstyles, dress like her, sing exactly like her, imitate her Dorothy character during your everyday lives, etc.?

Did any of you believe that Judy Garland radiated the type of teen sex appeal that was popular during the 1930s, and that if you were only more like her, your crush would say something like, "How'd you like to go out with me, you spiffy gal?", or something like that?

Did any of you ever become desperate to be Judy Garland, or even suffer from any kind of a nervous breakdown (a la Deanie Loomis from "Splendor in the Grass") because you didn't have the natural looks, money, etc., to look that Hollywood glam?  Did you suddenly try to gain weight, just so that you could achieve Judy's plump, farm-fed good looks, and/ or did you try to dye your hair to match hers?
8)

Were teen girls that star-crazy back then, or do today's teens take their star obsessions way too seriously?

Yes, because someone here is going to know that.  Where is that 97 year old lady when we need her?  She would know!

My grandmother was around at about the time when Garland was hot, so I could ask her about JG's stylistic and iconic influences...

(I may have to shout a bit though...not because she's deaf, but she's been dead almost 30 years!)

You want a first-hand account VG? You ain't gonna find it here...just HOW old do you think we are?  ;)

The Judy Garland image in "The Wizard of Oz" started in 1939 on the release of that film, around the time of World War 2, which the end of The Great Depression. At that time I would think it was hard to copy a style due to lack of money from the poor economy.

She must've clicked her heels three times and said "there's no place like home". (then disappeared) :D

Hmmm, are there any 90-year-olds on this forum to answer your question?

My Grandmother is 97, maybe she can answer your question but she would need a bit of help remembering sometimes she has a bit of dementia.
