Subject: The new 60's "Motown" thread

Written By: AmericanGirl on 06/26/15 at 9:06 pm

Motown was a major entity in the 60's.  Here, post anything you love about Motown the record company in the 60's - videos/songs, anecdotes, pictures, stories, you get the idea.  Rarities are welcome, too!  ;D  I'll start it off

It's hard to believe that this "just turned" 14-year-old would become one of the most iconic music artists in modern history:

Here's one I song actually remember hearing on "American Bandstand" at the tender age of 7 (I recall very few real songs from then):

Temptations- Beauty Is Only Skin Deep

One of my Temptations favorites!  :D

For reference, here are the "most prolific" Motown artists of the 60's:

Diana Ross & the Supremes                          Stevie Wonder
The Temptations                                        The Four Tops
Marvin Gaye (solo or with Tammi Terrell, Kim Weston)
Smokey Robinson & the Miracles                    Martha Reeves & the Vandellas
The Marvellettes                                        Mary Wells
Jr. Walker & the All Stars                            Gladys Knight & the Pips (part of 60s)
The Jackson Five (mostly 70s)                      Rare Earth (mostly 70s)

Other less prolific but notable Motown artists of the 60s

The Spinners (part of 60s)                          Edwin Starr
The Contours                                            Barrett Strong
Jimmy Ruffin                                              Brenda Holloway
Shorty Long                                              Isley Brothers (part of 60s)
The Originals

And don't forget when they had Teena Marie And Rick James during the late 70's-early 1980's signed to Motown.

There's an entire forum devoted to not just Motown, but for all kinds of classic soul:

The poster of the video added some interesting commentary - there was a surprising bit of drama going on when this recording was released:

Fun, perky song, minor hit - "As Long As I Know He's Mine"  :)

Classics all, but there was some very odd stuff released during the very early years of its formation. Berry Gordy was so very desperate for his labels to be accepted into white, 'mainstream' culture (he eventually succeeded handsomely), that near-forgotten crooners like Tony Martin and Billy Eckstine were on the books at one point, as was Dorsey Burnette on the label's short-lived venture into C&W music! (Motown doing C&W, who'da thought?)

And Marvin Gaye's earliest efforts were very much in the Nat 'King' Cole vein...

As all this detritus fell by the wayside, the timeless stars began to emerge which gave it its legacy that is still loved today, even though most of the big 'front-line' names have since departed us...

I need a permanent spot here. These are my jams. Back when music was music and no one heard the word "auto-tune"!

One of those 'spur of the moment' things - this was originally intended for the Temptations, but BG, who wanted the song recorded ASAP, couldn't locate the group. Enter The Contours, who happened to be in the right place at the right time...

If you're only destined to have one hit, make it memorable!

And of course, if you want every tiny little detail about these early releases, you can't do much better than by scooting over here...http://motownjunkies.co.uk/index/

Did The Contours have any other hits?

Yes - but nothing anything close to the popularity of "Do You Love Me" - incidentally, it charted a second time, in 1988!  Due to it's inclusion in the movie, "Dirty Dancing"  :)

This Supremes' gem was the title song from the movie, "The Happening":

I just found this one:

A noticeable difference: the B&W video features newcomer Cindy Birdsong, whereas the color video features Flo Ballard, before she was pushed out of the Supremes.  (R.I.P. Flo  :\'( )
