When did rock and roll become mainstream?

I believe it became mainstream around 1955 or 1956, although I am not entirely sure on that. Either way, rock and roll was still in it's early stages in the 40's and it definitely wasn't mainstream. It was, however, already mainstream by the start of the 1960s.

What happened in 1955, or 1956?

Rock Around the Clock became a number one hit in 1955, and Elvis Presley got popular in 1956. I believe Les Paul and Mary Ford may have done something to start it, but they didn't make it mainstream, and yeah, 1955/56 sounds about right to me on when it became mainstream.

All down to the 1955 film "Blackboard Jungle" which is remembered for its innovative use of rock and roll in its soundtrack and for the unusual breakout role of a black Bahamian-American cast member, future Oscar winner and star Sidney Poitier as a rebellious, yet musically talented student.

Make sense. Rock and roll is meant to be rebellious.

It probably reached full relevancy by 1960.

The 1950s, when we already got Buddy Holly, Elvis, and a bunch of other rock bands in the scene by then.

This date September 11th in 1956, police were called to break up a crowd of rowdy teenagers following the showing of the film Rock Around the Clock at the Trocadero Cinema in London, England. The following day, The Times printed a reader's letter that said: "The hypnotic rhythm and the wild gestures have a maddening effect on a rhythm loving age group and the result of its impact is the relaxing of all self control." The film was quickly banned in several English cities.
