Subject: When did the 1890s begin

Written By: d90 on 08/30/17 at 12:01 am

What year did the 1890s begin culturally

Subject: Re: When did the 1890s begin

Seems pretty darn trivial. There's nobody left on earth who was even alive in the 1890s.

I don't know if there's no one left who was alive then, but they sure as hell aren't likely to remember. Those who are young enough to have been alive then will have just been children.

As of April 15, 2017, there is absolutely nobody left on Earth who was around in the 1890s.

If they were alive, they'd probably be about 115 years of age or more.

When I was in the Philippines there was one women claiming to be 119 years old, but her age has still to be verified. In an interview on television, she looked so young and spritely, and her English speaking was perfect, if she claims to be that old she would have spoken Tagalog only, or even Spanish, not American English. We surmised she is a fake!

The oldest (verified) persons on earth are all born in the 1900s, making the 1890s technically the oldest decade to be completely forgotten from human memory at this point

I think culturally one could say that the first public showing of a kinescope film in may 1893 could be considered the cultural start of the 1890s.
other events considered are
1890:the last American Indian War which brought an end to frontier times
1893: The Panic of 1893

I'm sorry, and no insult intend, but this is a really dumb question, especially since none of us were there

Historians talk about events that happen ed centuries before they were born and just because you are not around to witness something does not mean you can't learn about it online or in books. There are tons of historic sources online

We'd have to read books about it and go to the library to read the old papers because there was no TV or even radio back then.  :-\\

If you look on the Internet Archive you can find books from the 1890s and if you look on Newspapers.com or genealogy bank or any site similar to that you can find newspaper articles from the 1890s

I only read two books set in the 1890s, or I should say passed through the 1890s, those are Albert Einstein and Max Planck's biographies. One thing I noticed is that electricity wasn't popular yet but was starting to get popular as the decade wore on. Actually, Albert Einstein's dad was an electrician and was contracted often to install city lights. Well that's all I know LOL.

The only real video footage of the  1890s are early silent short films by people like George Melies, William Kennedy Dickson, Auguste and Louis Lumière

Maybe they put a lot of makeup on her to make her look younger than what she is now/was.

Make up or not, she was too active for a person 119 years old.

I must find the interview online.

Some species of whales can live up to 200 years

There're also some plants out there that have known the first millenium.

No it started late 1888, and 1889 is the first 100% 1890s year.

It is fascinating to think about how even not that long ago there were people alive who could have told us all about the '90s- the 1890s, that is. My great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents were born about then. But of course there isn't much much nostalgia for that time left.

No, NYE 1889 was the transition from 1880's culture to 1890's culture. By January 1st, 1890 12:00:00 AM, it was 100% 1890's. I remember being there and feeling the huge cultural shift.

It's weird but 1890 felt more 1880s than 1889 did, which was a 100% 1890s year.

So does that mean 1890 was 200% 1880's?

Yeah that’s true like there were people born in the 1880s still alive around 10-15 years ago that would have remembered the 1890s as kids. A bit over 20 years ago Jeanne Calment who was born in 1875 was still alive and she fully experienced the 1890s as a young adult and would have had vivid memories of that time. It is kinda fascinating to think that not that long ago we did have a few people who did live in that time still around but now literally every single one is gone.

What a total shame! Let's hope the inferior 90s (the 1990s) gonna know the same fate :P
