"Je t'appartiens" is a popular song originally published in French in 1955  interpreted by Gilbert Bécaud, It became popular worldwide with an English version "Let It Be Me" by The Everly Brothers (1960) and later with the duet by Betty Everett and Jerry Butler (1964).

Lyrics of the movie "Carmen Jones" are based on Georges Bizet's opera Carmen.

From Google, opera lyrics:

"L'amour est un oiseau rebelle (Habanera)

love is a rebellious bird
L'amour est un oiseau rebelle

that no one can tame
Que nul ne peut apprivoiser

And it is in vain that it is called
Et c'est bien en vain qu'on l'appelle

If he agrees to refuse
S'il lui convient de refuser

Nothing is done, threat or prayer
Rien n'y fait, menace ou prière

One speaks well, the other is silent
L'un parle bien, l'autre se tait

And that's the other one I prefer
Et c'est l'autre que je préfère

He did not say anything, but he likes me
Il n'a rien dit, mais il me plaît

Love (× 4)
L'amour (× 4)

Love is bohemian child
L'amour est enfant de bohème

He never, never, knew any law
Il n'a jamais, jamais, connu de loi

If you do not love me, I love you
Si tu ne m'aimes pas, je t'aime

And if I love you, take care of yourself
Et si je t'aime, prends garde à toi

Beware
Prends garde à toi

If you do not love me, if you do not love me, I love you
Si tu ne m'aimes pas, si tu ne m'aimes pas, je t'aime

Beware
Prends garde à toi

But if I love you, if I love you, take care of yourself
Mais si je t'aime, si je t'aime, prends garde à toi

Love is bohemian child
L'amour est enfant de bohème

He never knew a law
Il n'a jamais jamais connu de loi

If you do not love me, I love you
Si tu ne m'aimes pas, je t'aime

And if I love you, take care of yourself
Et si je t'aime, prends garde à toi

Beware
Prends garde à toi

If you do not love me, if you do not love me, I love you
Si tu ne m'aimes pas, si tu ne m'aimes pas, je t'aime

Beware
Prends garde à toi

But
Mais…"

"Dat's Love" from "Carmen Jones", lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein
"ove's a baby that grows up wild
And he don't do what you want him to
Love ain't nobody's angel-child
And he won't pay any mind to you
One man gave me his diamond stud
And I won't give him a cigarette
One man treats me like I was mud,
And what I got, dat man can get.
Dat's love, dat's love, dat's love, dat's love
You go for me and I'm taboo
But if you're hard to get, I'll go for you
And if I do, then you are through
Oh, my baby, that's the end of you
... So take your cue
Oh, Don't say I didn't tell you true
... I told you truly, if I love you,
Dat's the end of you!
When your love bird decides to fly
There ain't no door that you can close
She just pecks you a quick good-bye
And flicks de salt from her tail and goes
If you listen then you get taught
And here's your lesson for today
If I choose you, then you get caught
But once I got you, I go away
Dat's love..."

I hope I placed the wording clearly.

I was brought up on musicals at a young age, but I think my parent held me back on "Carmen Jones", but I have grown to love the opera.

The Toys - Lovers Concerto
The song based the melody on the familiar "Minuet in G major" (BWV Anh. 114) from J.S. Bach's Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. One key difference is that the "Minuet in G major" is written in 3/4 time, whereas "A Lover's Concerto" is arranged in 4/4 time.

Yes it became a hit two years later, in the early 1960s, but I'm posting it here because it was originally released in 1959, not long after it was recorded.

Manha de Carnaval from Black Orpheus (1959)

One time when we were in Puerto Rico, we went out to dinner at a restaurant which was pretty much open air. They had live music (one guy playing a flute and one playing a guitar). I requested this song but they had a long list of requests. We were done with our meal and was about to leave when they started playing it. There was something about feeling the Caribbean breeze and smelling the sea air (we were a block from the water) and hearing that song being played just gave me a feeling that I can't describe.

Carlos & I played this song at our wedding:

Moonlight In Vermont Ellla Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong (1956)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8HgdIJ_i7k

This was our "family" dance. First Carlos danced with my mother and I danced with his father. Then we switched and he danced with his sister to fill in for his mother and I danced with my dad. Then we switched again and he danced with my niece (our maid of honor) and I danced with his son (our best man). We wanted to recognized all but didn't want to do a song for each-especially since our parents were getting up there. And we figured this was slow enough for them.

We were looking for a song to use and shortly before, we went to a concert on our green which was a group that played big band music. Their last song they said, "This song needs no introduction" and they started playing it. Carlos & I looked at each other and said that THAT could be the song. We went up to the band leader after and asked him what the name of the song was. He said, "Moonlight in Vermont." I looked at Carlos and said, "Perfect!" When I talked to our DJ about the song, he said that he had a Willy Nelson version. I was like ugh! I never cared too much for Willy. Then he said Ella & Louis and I said, "Perfect."

I also used this song for a slide show I created about Vermont.
