Subject: The Hippies of the 1960s or 70s

Written By: violet_shy on 07/03/21 at 8:31 pm

They were from way before my time! I mean, they were a little weird...lol! But I like what they stood for and spoke about, and what it all meant. I never understood it at first, I mean part of me did and part of me didn't. Then I started reading about it. Was anyone here part of that scene and remember it? Share your nostalgia here. Make me curious!

Well, I was age 10 in 1970.  I recall I aspired to grow up to be a hippie at the time.  When I told my mom this, she laughed.  :D

I could be wrong, but that photo does not look legit to me. That looks like people much more current, posing or playing dress up as 60s hippies.

Sometimes Howard doesn't do due diligence before posting something. But, mind you, he never says the photo is from the 60s. (Although he doesn't say it isn't, either). He could be asking "did you dress like people from the 2000s dressing like what they think people from the 60s dressed like?".  :D

How would know that?

If I noticed it was a fake, anybody could. Besides, you could click on the photo and see where it was from before you posted.
Philip Eno traced it in one second.  That's what I mean by "due diligence".

Yes I noticed pretty much right away it was a fake.  It also helps a little  to have been around back then to notice  the difference.

You are correct. But even if one wasn't around back then it still looks like a modern fashion layout with professional models. They did try to get the "tint" of the photo to look like an old polaroid or something, but it still looks current.

In the same above photo, the turned-round guitar is getting me. At the photo-shot was that the only guitar available, it had no strings or showed sign of being modern made?

The shoe visible is also not the style of shoe that would have been worn in the late 60s though it indeed looks "retro". Nor was that southwestern "Arizona" type print of the woman on the right's skirt actually used for skirts back then though it now feels vaguely "60s". The entire thing is a modern person's conception of what the 60s may have looked like.

Indeed, I never saw a wedge shoe until at least '78 at the earliest (and I paid close attention to such things)

What we need to do is look at authentic hippy pictures from the late sixties, i.e. Woodstock?

But if you're looking for clothes, people weren't wearing too many there.  ;D

Here's some people either going to or coming from Woodstock. Their attire is NOTHING like the contrived look of the fake picture. And, as usual for the time period, people looked very serious.

And a photo of people at the festival. Again, nothing contrived about their basic denims. I wonder what the book is the man on the right is holding? "Siddhartha" maybe? Although I don't think "Siddhartha" was that thick. Maybe "Stranger In A Strange Land", another popular one back then.

^ no wedges in sight!

I have always associated hippies with bare feet, Paul McCartney was barefoot on the cover of Abbey Road.

Carole King is barefoot on the cover of "Tapestry" (1971) also. A hippie-ish "Earth Mother' type photo if there ever was one!

Actually, that was in January 1967, so not quite summer.  Although, if you've ever been to San Francisco, you know you can hardly tell the difference with temperatures in the 50s year-round.
