Subject: Is there anything on amiright you'd like to see done?

Written By: ChuckyG on 08/17/05 at 1:56 pm

Any features, pages, etc.  Bugs you know of that should be corrected?

I'm probably going to focus my free time on other sites if things are ok on amiright.  I've finished recodeding the HTML for all the existing sections, in order to allow me to redesign the look of amiright.  Now that's done, I really don't have any ideas for a redesign, so I'll probably leave it as it is for awhile.

How about an improved search function that's similar to the old one but that won't crash the server?

Reformulate parody lists without regard to "The" and "A" as starting words in titles, for more logical alpha-listing.

You mean on the song title pages?  It should do that on the Performer Index section, I wasn't aware the other index did that.

you're talking about a parody search right?  I could probably write an author/title search without too much pain.  One that searches the lyrics might be a little much for the server.

A search that allows any combination of the following search-criteria would be excellent:

Original Performer
Original Title
Parody Author
Parody Title

It would be great if the match employed some degree of fuzzy logic, allowing for less-than-exact-but-close matches.

yeah, that's probably do-able.  fuzzy matching... I guess I can do it the google way, asking if you mean "xxx", and use the datafile that's used to clean up the indexes.

I have a few questions: The authors index now has all names without spaces and punctuation. Do I need to submit the next parody under "RedAnt" vs "Red Ant" (with the space) to get it on my list?

Also, what happened to today's parodies? Every one of them doesn't have an OS name, just "" where the name should be. When I click on them the name shows up.

I caught this on the random function a while back: What happened to the comments on this parody?

I was trying to fix the sort issues.  Submit your name normally, it's just a display issue.

I have no idea what happened to the comments on that other parody.

I put the "sort" function back on the author pages (should show up in a couple minutes).  I was having a problem with the author descriptions disappearing with the script, but figured out the cause.  On really large pages (like Malcolm Higgins) it takes a while to sort (especially in Internet Explorer, the world's slowest browser)

So, you can click on the "Submitted" column, and it will sort the page by when it was submitted.  The row colors don't resort, so it's not pretty, but it's good enough.

I think AmIRight would look better with some photos and images. There's a mighty lot of writing and lots of people may stay a little longer if there are purty pictures to look at when looking up a band or whatever.

I started to do that with the band pages, using amazon images, but back when I had problems with bandwidth stopped doing it. You can still see some images on pages like this:

http://www.amiright.com/artists/eminem.shtml

but that's not very exciting I suppose.  I'll look into it again, since amazon now lets you link directly to pictures I think.

I have a seperate thread on the messageboard about it.  People have asked for it, since there are some morons who occasionally think it's funny to pretend to be someone else when posting a sub-par parody.  It's optional, if you don't set a password, you won't need it.  If you do set a password, you will need to remember it for every new parody you post.  I don't plan on doing more with it, but I have thought about it.

So many people complain about getting undeserved "1's" on their parodies (I personally don't care a whit...the comments, to me, are what is important) . Maybe you could somehow put a password or something on the voting box that automatically records the vote next to the voters name...and make the voter be a registered author....that way there would be no anonymous 1's given out...people would be accountable for their votes, and everyone would know how a person voted. This would put a stop to the 1 guys or gals...unless of course the parody deserved it. ;) I know very little about computers, so I don't know if what I've described even makes any sense, or if it can be done, but a lot of people would be happy if they quit getting 1's all the time. I think Agrimorphee got 26 (1's) on one of his songs...there's no call for that, it just brings his average down.

As soon as I require people to make an account to register votes, the likelihood of people leaving votes drops to near zero.  This isn't the first time it's been suggested.

I have an idea. Why not make a 50's category for parodies? I see lots of pre-1960 songs that have been parodied, especially a few that came out exactly 50 years ago.

Hey, Chucky, if you could remove all my votes that are anything other than 555, that would be really cool. And maybe change the voting form on my parodies to only allow 555's. Also cool. Thanks in advance.

Meanwhile, I gotta say that I really like the ability to search an author's parody list by date submitted. Thanks for adding that. Also, the album cover pix that now run down the right side of parody pages are nifty. I know they're just ads, but they brighten up the joint and often add some unintended humor. I hope those suckers at Amazon make you really really rich.

The album covers are kind of a multi-pronged effort on my part for the site.

1) Make some extra cash (not much, but it did increase click throughs to amazon about 20%)

2) Put some pictures on the site.  As a few people have pointed out, there's almost nothing but text on the site

3) Give me the opportunity to redesign the pages on the site, to have a large picture.  This is so that if a collection of parody pictures dealing with groups ever gets off the ground, I can easily substitute them.  So far only the artist pages have the extra large image on them, but parodies and misheard lyrics will get them soon too.

I've written some scripts to handle picture uploads (like for onlyonfilm.com), so I was thinking of something similar for amiright.

http://www.amiright.com/artists/

The bands listed on this page which have the most stuff submitted to them on the site.  If all had at least one picture done for them it could give me a good incentive to begin switching out the large amazon ads.  I'd of course need to approve/disapprove the submissions, but I think for something like this, I'd also have a section where people could just view the picture submitted, and see which ones were approved for general use on the site, and which aren't (with the obvious spam/porn stuff deleted out right).  When you saw a parody cover on the site, you could click on it, and see the original album cover, and a larger view of the album along with who submitted, and allow comments/votes as well.

In the past I've always worried about two things with this idea (and it's something I've been toying with for four years at least!), copyright issues and bandwidth.  I think on the bandwidth front I'm ok.  The amazon albums all use their images, but these would use my bandwidth.  The size though shouldn't be too big an issue.  Copyright.  Well, if we stick to album covers, I suppose we'd be ok.  It should fall under fair use (if it's clearly parody).  There's several sites on the web who have been doing the photoshop contests for ages now, and I don't think any of them have been sued.

due to the way the comments are structured, that would be a tall request.  Right now, it's easy enough to just dump all the comments via links to the static comment pages already created for the various parodies.  I could code it to look at the dates and sort them, but the script would probably take twice as long to run, and it already takes a long time to run as it is.

I thought of two REAL things this time, Chucky, in case you're still taking requests:

1) The comments on album cover parodies show up on the Latest Comments page without a link to the parody. It would be interesting, when there's a comment like "THIS SUCKS HARDER THAN MY GRANDMA, LUKE BRATTONI," to be able to click to see the parody in question (and thus determine who created it).

2) There are enough parody recordings at this point that it would be nice to have them indexed in some way.

Not that I'm being ungrateful or anything. The site rocks.

I've laid out some of the ground work for this, I just didn't follow through yet.    I'm surprised at how harsh the voting on those has been.  I know they aren't all masterpieces, but yesh....

agreed... some of the first ones submitted no longer even show up in the main index now, due to it's limited size.  I'm guess by original performer would be good enough, with the original recordings (non parodies) on their own page.

I've been generating thumbnails for the covers (use them on the homepage of amiright).  I mostly plan on displaying them on the artist summary pages, and song parodies, etc.  instead of on the index pages.  Not sure how thumbnails on the index pages would look, but I have thought about it a little.

The site could use a "printer-friendly" option to convert a webpage's text into a readable format minus the google ads. Oftentimes the lyrics that I printout (I make one copy for all of my submissions) come out with 5 pages, with up to 3 pages that I don't need that end up as waste.

Don't you save the text on your computer before you submit it?  I think most authors save their copies locally (I encourage that, incase something gets lost or the site crashes).  It's probably easy enough for me to do, but I hate to get into coding features that might only interest one or two people.  I try to accomodate, but you know... >grin<

This is something that 99% of the lyric web sites I visit have. (note example at http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/depeche-mode/39367.html)

Call me crazy, but most of my submissions are entered on the fly from scratch notes.

This is something that 99% of the lyric web sites I visit have. (note example at http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/depeche-mode/39367.html)

Call me crazy, but most of my submissions are entered on the fly from scratch notes.

ok...

I noticed that site did it by having an extra plain copy to link to... that would probably not work for me (twice as much to backup, ugh) but I think I can do something in javascript to build a printable page.  I'll see what I can do.

ahh... the magic of CSS let's me change the print design quite easily.

Turns out, my redesign of the site (which was mostly stuff you can't see) helped this out.  If you're using a current browser, like Firefox or Internet Explorer 6, you will not see the left and top navigation bar or the ads on the right side on parodies.  On the rest of the site, right hand ads are still present.

So try it out, and let me know what you think.  If you have an ancient browser, I probably can't help you.

Not anything I'd like to see done but a question: I wanted to submit an updated/new bio and include a couple of parodies that are my personal favorites that show up as clickable links. Do I need to use the same code as on parody submissions to get them to work (i.e. <a href="whatever">description</a>) or something else?

Thanks,

Red Ant

you use the same code... you can use <B></B> tags too... any html you want really.  Most of the limits on HTML on parodies and comments, are to prevent people spamming the site.

Some things I'd like to see fewer of (in fact, if they stopped altogether, that would be nice):

• Parodies with uncensored cuss words in them (whether they appear in the title, the lryics, or the comments). I have no objection to bathroom parodies (even though I don't care for 'em), but I wish people would stop using dirty words in them. The word that seems to appear the most is an anagram of "this"(and it comes out as "Sheesh" when you try to type it here). People, if you really feel the need to swear, either (1) use astericks in place of some of the letters, or (2) use an appropraite euphemism. What I'm saying is, uncensored profanity should not be allowed on the site.

• Decade erorrs. Look, I know we all make mistakes, but many of us would find it misleading to see a parody of, say, a 80's song in the 70's section, or vice-a versa. There's gotta be some way to solve that problem. Also, while I'm on the subject here, I don't think we need the decade listbox in the misheard/real lyrics sections. (A) It doesn't show up in each entry once it appears on the site; (2) The misheard/real lyric archives aren't sorted that way anymore (probably because those pages in the Misheard section took up lots of K's), and (D) lots of people have been getting it wrong (I don't know if it's just accidental or a matter of ignorance, but there's gotta be a way to check on it).

there's a handful of cuss words I won't let through, but hsit is one I've been allowing if it shows up in the text once or twice. otherwise, if I spot the f word or the c word, it get's rejected outright.

grow up.  seriousily.  It's not worth the effort to bother checking the decade the song came out.  Is "Escape (The Pina Colada Song" 70s or 80s?  Technically it came out in 1979, hit the charts in the last week of 1979 and was mostly on the radio in the 80s. If someone files it under 70s, morons will complain it's 80s, vice versa.  It's not important.  Really.  The worst it does is show up in the URL and the indexes if you still use the decade index. If you're looking in the 70s index for something, and see Eminem, are you going to seriousily click on it?  It's the author's responsibility. If they don't want to improve the ability of people to find their song, that's their problem.  Plenty of other songs to be found in the categories that are properly filled out.

it's also not going away on the misheards, because it's more work to code it to be removed, and since it hurts nothing, it isn't worth spending time to remove it.

Since this thread is here, I figured I'd make a request. Would it be possible for album cover parodies, recordings, etc. to appear on the author page where all of a given author's parodies are listed? As it stands, there's no easy way to find out what other work aside from parodies a given author may have on the site. If this is too difficult, by all means feel free to ignore it, but if it could be easily implemented, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks for the great website!  :)

I must say you forgot an angle Spaff.  You really want anyone who opens the link to the parody to automatically register a vote of 555, and if possible, anyone who Googles 'Amiright' and 'Angelina Jolie' or any search on Google where Amiright is returned should automatically cast a 555 for each of your parodies.

I also like the sort-by-columns feature you've added to each author's page, and to the author-list page, but when you click on the column heading, it always sorts with lowest value at the top.

You have to click a second time to get highest value at the top, and if it's a long page, the 2 sorts takes time, especially when you click on a link, then return, and the list is back in its original order - which means you have to go through the double-click process and the double-wait every time.

My hunch says 90% of people using this sort-feature are wanting to see the highest values at the top.

Is it too hard to alter the code to do it that way?

I've thought of doing it, but the author script is already taxing the system as it is (takes 20-30 minutes to run now I think).

I could always make a seperate script for a section of the site (like all the real lyrics, or all the song title pages).  Actually, wouldn't be that hard to do it on the individual pages themselves, just time consuming (to write it and then put it on each section, fix each one when a bug is found, etc).  If the album cover photoshops keep up their current submission rate (or increase) I'd definitely link those in.

it's certainly worth thinking about.  If I used a proper database for the site, stuff like this would be far more trivial.  I initially did it for the parody authors, because I figure writing a parody takes a lot longer to do than submitting a one line entry to one of the other pages.  It's also the type of thing, where someone reading a parody would probably be more interested in checking out similar parodies if they like the one they read.  The other stuff on the site, I don't think is as dependent on who wrote it.  I definitely don't want it on the misheards, because it encourage people to create stuff just to increase their name recognition (though I'm sure a lot of stuff submitted isn't truly misheard, it's just hard to tell though).

I think that'the litmus test for whether I should do it though, is whether it's something visitors to the site would find useful.  If it's just a handful of authors (10-15 people), it's a lot of time for me to spend making a small number of people happy.  I don't know if there's a lot of people submitting stuff (100s vs dozens) that want to see just their stuff, or whether non-submittors want to see stuff arranged by submittor.

it's possible to make every column sort that way, but not as easy to pick which do and which don't.  It would probably screw up the alpha sort if I did that change (z to a)

I think you have potential to have another section :

"Oxymoron songs"

Where the title of the song either doesn't make logical sense or is not literally possible, for example :

Live Forever  - Oasis

or

Wake Up Dead - Megadeth

If you think it would be a goer I would be happy to edit it for you.

Is there a way where I can change the name or transfer the songs to a different account?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxymoron

I was just looking over the definition for oxymorons, and it looks like the word has come to mean more than it used to via incorrect usage.  What you've listed above could be considered a "perceived contradiction of terms" wheras a true oxymoron is a deliberate combination of contradictory terms.

I'm not even sure the two you listed are oxymorons.  Live and Forever are not really contradictory.  While it can be said nothing lives forever, the opposite of live would be dead and forever would be never.  So Never Forever would be an oxymoron, Living Dead would be as well.  A Live Recording could be considered a "perceived contradiction of terms" because it's either live or a recording (it would be more proper to say Recording of Live Performance).

Considering the confusion on the subject, you sure you want to try and tackle this one?

Interesting !  Well, the oxymoron concept could be dropped - cause that makes it far too specific - and it could simply entail titles where the the title is not possible - such as the examples I gave.  It would be a case of what to call it, and the simplest I can think of is "not literally possible" which seems a little clumsy.

I am still happy to give it a go if you are.  :)

"Literally Impossible" would work as a good title for the section.  Should that be just song titles, or maybe lyrics instead?

Before I noticed you were talking about just song titles for oxymorons, I set it up as a lyrics section.  Might still be interesting to see if people can spot oxymorons in lyrics, though I'm sure there will be a lot of rejections in a section like that.

Hey, Chuck... on the "Add One Letter" section, there's a mistake. The person who submitted this one Changed a letter instead of added one:

"Bid Me," Foo Fighters originally "Big Me"
I'll get you that overpriced painting.
rocky

That's a Changed letter, not an Added letter.

Is there a possibility that this one could be moved to the correct section? Or does it need to be deleted and the person have to resubmit it under the correct one?

Turns out the video card fan died.  I didn't notice because it faces the floor when the machine is standing up.  So I purchased a killer new motherboard/CPU/RAM for no reason.  Though on the plus side, once ATI repairs the video card, my new machine will be screaming fast (4 gigs of matched RAM, Intel not AMD) and the old one can be setup for the wife so I can get on and do something when she's working on the computer too.
