Subject: Songs with clapping - I really need a list of these...

Written By: ChuckyG on 10/19/07 at 3:53 pm

I've noticed my two year old son (in my avatar at the left) loves songs with clapping in them.

Not sure if this justifies an entire section on amIright, but I was thinking maybe I'd try make a CD-R and running a few dozen by him this weekend.  For instance:

Steve Miller Band - Take the Money and Run

I'd prefer classic rock since that's what I listen to, but feel free to list anything, I'll run it by him.  I'm interested in pop music, not kids music (like Raffi or other crap no one over the age of 2 would listen to).

Carwash - Rose Royce (I think) not what you'd call classic rock but it does have clapping in it!

Check out some quizzes here by Robert.  He did some ausio quizzes with drum intro, guitar solo etc.  I think he did one with clapping in it.  :-\\

The young fella's looking way cool!  :)

Also not 'classic rock' but it has a ready-made clapping riff, is 'In The Navy' by The Village People...

Apart from the obvious 'The Clapping Song' by The Belle Stars and/or Pia Zadora, the word clapping immediately brought these non-classic rock songs to mind ...

♦ 'Never Tell An Angel (When You're Hearts on Fire) - The Stompers (Minor US hit from 1983.  It's fun to clap along with this one)
♦ It's My Life - Sash! (late 90s dance hit that's built around a clapping riff)
♦ The Kid's American - Matthew Wilder (Yes, he had another US Top 40 lol)

Some 80s hits with claps in them ...

♦ Who Knows How to Make Love Stay - Doug and the Slugs
♦ Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham!
♦ The Way to Your Heart - Soulsister
♦ This Little Girl - Gary 'U.S.' Bonds
♦ Seasons of Gold - Gidea Park
♦ Stomp! - Brothers Johnson
♦ General Hospi-Tale - The Afternoon Delights

I can just picture them singing now .. 'They want you!  They want you!  They want you as a new recruit!' ;D

Get this album:

The Langley Schools Music Project: Innocence & Despair.  8) http://www.keyofz.com/keyofz/langley/

Not only for the significant hand clapping on a few of the tracks, but for the joyous sounds of kids covering Bowie, Barry Manilow, the Beach Boys etc., in a cavernous school gymnasium.

Might be quite a bit dreary for a kid, but Radiohead's "A Punch Up At A Wedding" has claps.

thanks for all the suggestions so far.  I'm going to make a mix CD later this week and see what kind of reaction I can get from him.

That's the one I was going to say...

I'm pretty sure the last World Cup single "Vindaloo" had clapping in...

Possibly The Birdy Song, too (your son might enjoy that, Chucky, but I bet it'll drive you up the wall in a few minutes or less)

I'm trying to entirely avoid kids music, I want pop music that appeals to toddlers (so the parents don't go insane listening to it).

"Hey Jude"

I bet he'd like the na-na-na part of it most of all... stuff with noises he can easily imitate are excellent

"Let's Go"  1963 title song of the album by the same name, by the Ventures.

Completely instrumental, in the "surf guitar" style, except for the words, "Let's go", and the clapping.

I haven't tried any of these, but it turns out Neal LOVES my They Might Be Giants video collection.  Especially Istanbul (Not Constantinople), and Ana Ng

I've got the DVD and played it for him a few times, but he has zero interest in it... which is odd, since it's geared for him.

I tried REM last night just for something different, but no interest there either.

I notice if I "sing" along with parts of it, he really enjoys it more.

I'm a huge TMBG fan and have noticed that my 4 year old appreciates their stuff that's geared toward the older audience better than the kid tunes (with "Go For G" as the exception).

While these others don't have clapping, they do seem to appeal to my daughter:
"Cowtown" and "Mr. Me" from Lincoln
"Letterbox" and "Women and Men" from Flood

Just beware of one naughty word in "I Palindrome I" from Apollo 18...otherwise, their catalog is entirely family friendly.

My then 5 year-old cousin really enjoyed "They Might Be Giants" (Flood) and "The Guitar"(Apollo 18) (hey-o, there's clapping in that one, albeit of the electronic 80s-drum-machine kind )

yeah, Neal likes the The Guitar too... but not as much as the others.  I've got to pull out the CDs instead of the videos and see if he likes them as much.

"Where Did Our Love Go" by the Supremes, (maybe known better by its opening line, "Baby, baby") has clapping from the very start.
