make sure that you use a reputable source for hosting your avatar images.. someone found out this morning that some webhosts will replace their images with obscene ones if they don't want you linking to their images..

of course, any intelligent webhost will just configure thier site to prevent off site linking if it's a problem for them. But not everyone who runs a site is all that smart..

And remember, don't link to images off Geocities or any Lycos-hosted site (e. g. Angelfire, Tripod) as well.  TripsMom did a no-no in linking her avatar from an Angelfire site…

America Online supplies a certain amount of Free FTP space, as do certain other providers, webhosts, etc. The best idea with avatars taken from other websites is to download the picture and use a personal FTP space as far as linking goes. Some webhosts don't like for their space to also be used with graphic links.

Or, if that doesn't work, you ask an AOL user to upload it for you and link to them...:)

Just some pointers from my experience ... I imagine the majority of people that do not wish to have graphical links will take the necessary steps to prevent it and there are only a few that use the replacement strategy. At least, I certainly hope so.

Question: I once used an image from another site (remember that gargoyle one?) and the owner of the site went around pming people about this. Is my guess that if you directly link to another site the webhost can also read the pms which the image is featured correct? I should stick to using the "angel19" pic that this site offers (although that's BadAngel's). I also like Langdon Hughes's avatar. I wonder if she'd be willing to share (or retire it ??? )...

no, they can't read your personal messages, only the URL of the site that is requesting the image..

ftp is actually pretty easy to use, it's just a matter of having some personal webspace you can use for hosting your own images..

The thing all boils down to bandwidth. Tripod used to allow remote loading till a little over a year ago. They proceeded to jam thousands of people using their free web storage space. Unless you were using their site as a home for your webpage, you got scrapped. Tripod had the best image quality transfer of all the sites I had been to. Anyway, all the big sites you go to that show pics, (galleries and such) are paying for bandwidth each time a pic is loaded to another site, ( I like this one, I'm going to use it for my avatar or banner it adds to the limit to the originators bandwidth, limiting them to use what they rightfully pay for. Some sites are still allowing remote loading for free but they're dwindling. I used to have a list of sites on favs at my old aol acct but dumped them, try this and scroll through them for one that works. The image must load and show on another site whether you have the storage site open or not. Sites like INBC and XDrive only work while the site is open

Many of the sites that are free offer from 5 to 25 Mbs of storage space, there might still be some 50 MB sites. I must have 40 or more pics and haven't used up 10% yet.

Just in case these aren't allowed, let me know, no problem.
