Subject: We need more moderators

Written By: Rice Cube on 12/04/03 at 10:23 p.m.

I'm not like volunteering or anything, but with Chucky so busy with amiright and other stuff, and Hairspray pretty much MIA, the 2000s board and some others got kinda wacky again and nobody's around to delete or warn lurkers and what not...so I'm advocating more moderators.

Just my opinion.  Thanks.

It is obvious you want to be a moderator, Rice Cube.  However, weren't you a moderator at another message board recently and you were fired? ;)

I doubt he wants to be a moderator. After the hell he went through the last time, why would he want to do it again? I'm sure I know who wrote this, and it doesn't surprise me at all. ::)

BTW, he wasn't fired, he resigned because certain other mods were complaining.

I don't want to be a moderator, I was just observing that there were certain threads that were being overrun by annoying and belligerent "guests" and not being taken care of.

The fact that Chucky is too busy to notice this thread and Hairspray is still MIA while this is happening sorta bugs me.

If you wish to attack me, you can always register here and PM me, or PM me on the other message board instead of hiding behind the internet shroud.

I am not a member on the other message board. :'(  I am not attacking you, Rice Cube.  This is just a cyber conversation.  Like all of the other one's you have, you should know. ;)  {{cyberhug}}  Please take my apology's.

By the way, here is an example of a thread that was started by a lurker with a perceived intent of spamming, and then hijacked by another lurker who feels it is his/her duty to insult us.  I believe Goreripper has already contacted a moderator about this, and that was two or three days ago.  All the posts are still there.

Sorry to disappoint you, but he was asked to resign as a moderator over there.  That is much closer to being "fired" than what you are suggesting.

Wow, you sure could have fooled me.  You sure act like someone who wants to be a mod. "I'm not like volunteering or anything..." is the first thing a person reads on this thread.  With that particular line, it is very obvious that you are indeed volunteering.

I think it's funny that you deleted yourself from that other forum after being asked to step down as a moderator, but nobody asked to leave as a member. Why would you feel it necessary to do that?  You were very well liked over there as a person. Not eveyone can be an effective moderator, just like not everyone can be a skilled brain surgeon.

Wow.....Rice Cube mentioned above that Chucky is "too busy" to notice this thread, and that Hairspray is still MIA...but someone has gone and deleted the original post by "whoa mama."  The only way anyone knows of its original existence is the quote within Lurker Jess's post.

I know that lurkers cannot delete their own posts, so it is obvious the moderators here are indeed paying attention and are on top of things.

Perhaps the politically themed thread Rice Cube is referencing in the other part of the board does not sufficiently violate the forum guidelines, and that's why it has not been deleted.  Or perhaps not enough people are sufficiently offended by it.

And as "Guest" says....many of the registered members here are fueling that fire.  Quit answering him or her, and I bet you'll find that the nonsense will stop.

I am not interested in starting a fight with anyone, I just wanted to clear up a few missated facts.  My thoughts on the political thread here are just my opinions.  Perhaps Chucky or Hairspray will indeed lock or delete it at some point, but since it has already run for 7 pages, I find it unlikely to be deleted now.

And before anyone decides to call me names for not registering....I am a registered member here.  I do not always log in while I am at work, in order to get around my employer's firewall.  Just like so many of the rest of us here.  ;)

It's Sunday.  Unless you're working as a security guard or something similar, I'd say it was safe to log in now.  If you want to discuss this without hiding behind a fake e-mail, you know how to reach me.

What is the point of bringing stuff from the other board over here.  Rice had a question, he asked it.  He didn't bring anything up from over there.  It is ridiculous to bring it here, why don't you just let it go?

I'm sorry.  I didn't mean to get anyone angry or upset.  :(

I just didn't like to see our moderators, their judgement, and their efficiency being called into question out in here in public. If it was really necessary to have more moderators here, I'm sure Chucky would appoint someone.

Personally, I think that it was rather mean to say that we need more moderators out here in public. Something like that should have gone into a PM to Chucky or Hairspray.

That is only my opinion of course, and I expect some people will disagree with me.  Maybe all of you will.  It just struck a wrong nerve with me.

As to bringing stuff from the other board over here, how many people on this board who don't go over there knew that Rice Cube was a moderator there?

Probably none.

It was a different "guest" who brought up that subject, and it was another member of our board who chose to answer the subject ("fueling the fire" so to speak), so please don't take everything out on me.

Let's all just be friends now, ok?

Why don't we all just bare-knuckle box? I mean once that breaks out no one talks trash anymore. But ooops, I'm fueling the fire too. It's just funny how unprofessional this thread has gotten really fast. Chucky runs this site so well that if I weren't broke and paying through college, I'd be advocating that he charge for it, but he just posted that he is cracking down on sex related or sex referencing parodies. If he's fed up with stuff like that, it means that we, the people who use the network that he so generously cares for, are being irresponsible. I don't really remember what my point was... Oh yeah, bare-knuckle boxing.

I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing whether there's need for another moderator or not.  Everyone (myself included) does this in their spare time, so it's quite possible that things are going on in a thread that the moderators are unaware of. If it happens to often, than yes we need to know that we're letting too much inappropriate material slip by. Trends like that can be hard to spot from one or two private messages.

I'm not planning on any additional moderators yet though.  I know with the guest posting allowed that there may be need for more oversight than usual, but I don't think it's gotten out of control yet.

The thread that someone posted the link to here, was a political thread, and while it looked like things were starting to turn nasty, I don't think it was all that bad.  Calling someone dumb is certainly not appropriate to the discussion, but it ended at that, and people pointed out that we don't want discussions with name calling.  If people responded in kind, than yeah, I would have deleted the posts and/or locked the thread.  Why people argue politics is beyond me, no one's going to change their opinion based on some anonymous troll on a messageboard.

there are a couple messages in this thread I should probably prune out though (since they appear to be attacks on Rice Cube). I don't want any of the nonsense from other messageboards creeping onto here. I got dragged into that mess once before, and I'm not getting involved again.

I don't know what moderators do, but I have been addicted to this site since i started about a week ago. From 6pm until 12am, I am here. Sad some may say...but I enjoy it.

I agree with Rice Cube.

I sadly replied to the article about Bush  :'( but if I need to stay away from "guests" let me know. I don;t want to be the gasoline on the fire. :D.

Nah, the only guests you should avoid are the 'flamers'.  Like the one in that thread that are posting things and generally being argumentative.  Most guests are members who are at work and can't log in. :)

A moderator keeps an eye on the boards and ensures that people aren't posting spam or offensive material, or being deliberately inflammatory, insulting, racist, etc. Basically, they ensure the rules of the board are followed and if they're not, they can remove threads or even ban people. Not that they have to do it much here, thankfully. :)
