Subject: Server problems

Written By: ChuckyG on 01/29/04 at 06:59 p.m.

the server has been having a lot of stability problems for the past few days. I'm trying to get some help with it, but the company which provides my hosting isn't very helpful when it comes to anything except sending me a bill.

It is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon, so if you find the site not responding, you'll have to check back later.  I wish I could say with certainty when these issues will get fixed, but unfortunately, I can't.

Victim of my own success.  Every growing site gets to a point where it's too large for it's server and needs to upgrade.

Well, Chucky, the '80s board is back up now and the links are connecting quickly, so we'll just have to cross our fingers! ;)  Thanks for the info about the server problems.

I am glad that you are aware of the problem. I did try to log on several times and couldn't get in. So at least I know that it is not my computer that has the problem. I hope everything gets worked out soon.

I was just checking the website for the hosting company... and it looks like we'll just need to ride the problems out for a few weeks.  There's no new servers available for at least another week, and I really would prefer to purchase a second server for running the new version of the messageboard software and design of a new website.  That will hopefully ease the server load and lead to less downtime. Worst case scenario, is that I just end up moving all the new sites to the new server and close this server.

fascinating I know...

yup, I'm going to start another website (as if I'm not busy enough with the ones I have).  It's a very excellent idea, and will hopefully require very little oversite from me if I design it properly. I don't want to give away what it is, since no one has done anything like it (that I'm aware of) and I don't want to see someone else build one before I get a chance. It deals with movies, that's all I'm saying.  It's my final project for my graphic design class, so I get to take advantage of the fact that I need to do this work anyways.  Plus, it gives me an opportunity to design a visually appealing website that's also functional.

if you want an idea about what the new messageboard software will look like, check out:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php

it's still beta software, but it's been in beta for quite some time, and appears to be pretty stable.

It has built in spell check, keyboard short cuts, better polling software, and about a million other options that this package doesn't

Don't know what sort of server it's running on, but it's blisteringly fast, too...
