Subject: Possibility of a Panic Button?

Written By: Tam on 08/15/05 at 8:27 pm

A girlfriend of mine has decided that she wants to be a member on the boards, however her access is limited to when she is at work. My question Chucky is whether you have thought about putting a panic button on the pages? (Similar to those used on uproar.com or other games sites) When the button is clicked it would link to a page that looks like some sort of spreadsheet....

I know it isnt appropriate to be doing things like this while a person is at work.... but I figure it can't hurt to ask!  ;)

Interesting idea.  I'll look into it.

I could probably program it, to be keystroke triggered (like the control-s to save a message), so even if it scolls off the screen, you can still hit it.

Yeah, if you download MSN Plus, an add on for MSN Messenger you can use the command  CTRL + Space and it reduces the program to an icon that looks like a monitor in your Running Programs bar by the Clock. Maybe something like that?

I must admit..I was a bit hesitant to press it, at first. It looks rather intimidating---I didn't want the earth to implode.

No, it's just really small now.

I was playing around with the size.

I think if it's 15 wide, and 60 tall (or maybe shorter?) it's not as obvious, or distracting...

opinions?

Yeah...it's squished. Right before I posted the above message it was gone; maybe he was modifying the way it looked.

I think it's fine the way it is.

I was just thinking about the design some more... I should make it say BOSS, in the same font as the old 1970 Mustang...

I haven't designed a smaller image yet, so it's just squished and ugly at the moment.

It just sits at the top for me. (Firefox) - Just somnething maybe Chucky would want to check out (doesn't bother me, as I never use it)  :D

It is just sitting at the top for me, too.  (IE6)  Not that it matters, I don't visit at work anyway...no internet access.

ETA:
Ok, this is freaky...now it is at the bottom. :o

I will admit, I dug said "Panic Button", at first. I will also now admit the the novelty of it has officially worn off. Ya hear that, ya lousy "Panic Button"...I hate you! You lag my page and cause discomfort to my eyes!

Yeah, I think it's gone for good this time.

there's plenty of third party applications out there I found for hiding your browser and other stuff, if you really feel the need, you should find a way to do it.  Or use the home key like a few people mentioned.

Can she just open a spreadsheet and toggle between the two or just minimize the browser?  That's what I a friend of mine used to do ;)

I guess she will just have to figure it out. I already told her she shouldnt be doing it at work anywway or to wait and use the puter on her lunch and breaks - I think she is so into these boards that she's afraid she might miss something! ;D

I don't quite understand, could you just make a keyboard shortcut? No button, just press a certain key combination?

hmmm... I suppose I can still do that.  of course ALT-F4 works pretty well too...

So, there is officially nothing there? Had me going for the first two pages.  ;D I was about to get out my magnifying glass.  Still, wish I could have seen it while it was going. A minimized spreadsheet to bring up would work just as well or homepage.
