Subject: Colorboxes...the "take your time to achieve a top score" game

Written By: nally on 02/19/06 at 2:19 pm

Those of us who have played Color Boxes have probably noticed that your score depends on how much time it takes you to clear the board. If you ask me, that shouldn't be the case. IOW, to achieve a "high" score, you have to be slow at clearing the board. I mean, it's an interesting concept and all (finding pairs of matching colored squares), but the timer should run backwards (starting at a value like one million or something) if it's gonna take your score directly from the timer.

Anyone else baffled by this?

Dude. Sorry, but this gets way too much attention. I don't think anyone actually believes this is how the scoring is supposed to work. It's messed up. The scoring on 100 meters is messed up. The scoring on 501 Darts is messed up. The scoring on Conun Drumb is messed up.

Unless there's some way to reverse the scoreboard, then there's really nothing more to be done. We've identified these games like 753 times, yaknow?

Yup.

I've never played any of the other games you mentioned, though. ::)

So which other games are like this?

501 Darts? (I haven't played that one as of yet, but I heard that the scoring is messed up.)

100 Meters is like that too.

So I wonder how long you'd have to leave it running in order to get, say, a million? ???

I don't have that much electiricity to waste.

I just wish they tracked the scoring on it differently.

What do you mean you don't have that much electricity to waste?  Just leave the computer on.  It's not going to waste anymore electricity than the fridge.

Don't sweat it.

In our house, the 'puter uses a lot of electricity when it's turned on.

.....then you need to get a new one.  They aren't that expensive.  Just go to dell.com

All computers run on the same power?

It's no different from your fridge being plugged in?

That's what I was saying.  Do you unplug the fridge too?

It is the monitor that soaks up the electricity.

And we have a bulky monitor on our home computer.

It takes up less space on the desk and you can put books or newspapers between you and the monitor while still working at the computer

It is the monitor that soaks up the electricity.
That's why I turn the monitor off when not in use. The PC is always on, unless it's being moved, worked on or there's a storm brewing outside.

Maybe he was referring to bandwidth. How much bandwidth is used up whilst playing these games? (Quite a bit I'd assume)

Uhm...no... I wasn't referring to that. I was just saying that when the 'puter is on, power is used.

And quoting what Philip said:

It is the monitor that soaks up the electricity.

This leads me to believe that a big bulky monitor like the one we have utilizes more power than a flat screen.

Is there any techno bod out there that can answer this?

I notice that the high score list for that game has been fixed now. :) Same for 100 Meters...I guess the scoring had been backwards on that one too?
