Subject: Ask me anything about Canada.

Since there is one for the States and Australia, why not Canada?

We were once linked to the U.K., we started becoming a seperate country in 1867.

But you're still technically a Commonwealth like us. Is there a big Republican movement over there? What about Quebec? Do you think it will ever secede as a seperate nation?

My guess is more like Robin to Batman, since Robin has a lame costume, while Batman's costume is cooler, plus he has Wayne Manor, the Batmobile, a cooler costume, etc.

At least we are not the Aqua Man of countries.  ;D

True.

As for a big Republician movement, currently the Conservative party is in charge, with the Liberal party voted out of office recently.

Quebec has been debating as to wheter or not, to be part on Canada for while. It will really depend as to how the next Federal election will turn out.

I sure hope that Quebec doesn't seperate.

Why do Canadians always say 'eh' after everything? (well, we do to, but we say, 'aye')

Subject: Re: Ask me anything about Canada.

Why do Canadians always say 'eh' after everything? (well, we do to, but we say, 'aye')

Good question.... eh?  ;D  Not really sure.  ;D

According to Wikipedia this is their answer.

According to the Canadian Oxford Dictionary the only usage of eh that is peculiar to Canada is for "ascertaining the comprehension, continued interest, agreement, etc., of the person or persons addressed" as in, "It's four kilometres away, eh, so I have to go by bike." Similarly, "It's nine-o'clock, eh?" means "You do know that it's nine o'clock? You are aware that it's nine-o'clock?".

In that case, eh is used to confirm the attention of the listener and to invite a supportive noise such as "Mm" or "Oh" or "Okay". It essentially is an interjection meaning, "I'm checking to see you're listening so I can continue."

"Eh" can also be added to the end of a declarative sentence to turn it into a question. For example: "The weather is nice." becomes "The weather is nice, eh?" This same phrase could also be taken as "The weather is nice, don't you agree?".

Depending on the speaker's tone or the dialectal standard, eh can also be perceived as rude or impolite, as "Repeat that!", and not a request.

Further examples of Canadian usage include: "I know, eh?" (Agreement), "Yeah, eh?" (Agreement; tone of voice changes meaning slightly). "I know. Eh!" (Pause between 'know' and 'eh' and emphasise 'eh'. This is an excited agreement.) Although technically questions, these are also said as statements.

Yeah, same sort of thing here. But it's sort of seen as a bit uncouth (though it is a particular trend with the youth). We also say, 'eh' or 'aye' in the same way, but fortunately it hasn't become a stereotype.

04 - "Corner Gas", a TV Series
05 - "The Doctor", a 1989 comeback hit by The Doobie Brothers
06 - Victor Garber, who plays Jack Bristow on the TV series "Alias"
07 - The old TV commercial slogan "Mr. Christie, you make GOOD cookies"
08 - Paul Shaffer, band leader on the "Late Show with David Letterman"
09 - David James Elliot, star of "JAG"
10 - Hostess Snack Cakes
11 - Swiss Chalet Chicken + Ribs
12 - "The Care Bears" Cartoon
13 - Kraft Dinner

Vachon Bakeries.  The reason is because there is all ready another company in Canada, that makes Hostess snack products in Canada, namely potato chips.

That is correct.  You definately know your Canadian trivia 8)

Another example of this....

There is a resteraunt chain in Canada called Harvey's. Hardees can never open up here, because their company sounds too similar to Harvey's.

What percentage of Canadians support Quebec's attempts to break away and form their own separate country?

I hope JamieMcBain won't mind my hijacking his thread for just one post. :P

That's an interesting question.... I don't know if I've ever even seen a poll on this issue done on all Canadians. I think it's because it really is only Quebec's opinion that matters, since it's up to the province whether it secedes or remains a part of Canada. There have been two referenda on sovereignty in the past and both have failed: in 1980 about 60% of Quebecers voted to remain part of this country, and in 1995 about 50.6% (a very close call!). I have the impression that the separatist movement is regarded as somewhat of an old-timer's dream these days - I've heard that young Quebecers are not as interested in it as some of their parents or grandparents are. However, the separatist Parti Québécois just late last year elected a new party leader: André Bosclair is young, charismatic, openly gay... He's certainly a fresh new face for the movement and I think he stands a chance of being elected premier. Although I hold no personal dislike for him, I would consider his election dangerous to Canada and I do not support it.

I would assume that the vast majority of Canadians outside of Quebec do not support the province's secession, and even within the province it is a contentious issue. :)
