So, is this the state song?

When I die, bury me low
Where I can hear the petroleum flow.
A sweeter sound, I never did know
The rolling mills of New Jersey.

Down in Trenton, there is a bar
The bums, they come from near and from far
They come by truck, they come by car
The lousy bums of New Jersey

Chorus

Down in Hoboken, there will be
Garbage as far as the eye can see.
There's garbage for you, there's garbage for me.
The garbage dumps of New Jersey.
Chorus

When at last, I decided to roam,
Far away from my home in Bayonne.
I sat down, and wrote this poem.
I wrote an ode to New Jersey.

Chorus

;D ;D ;D

-I have not been to Pennington...it's in Mercer County.
-Atlantic City is the biggest "cultural" city in Jersey. It's a very ghetto city with a fairly diverse population that is anchored economically by the casino/resort industry, since the beaches there are overcrowded and long past their peak. The boardwalk was invented there...so was saltwater taffy. It used to be a fairly luxurious resort. Now casinos and hospitality are the hallmarks of the economy and you have to go just shortly out of the downtown to find the "exotic" hookers and not onto the front streets. The surrounding area is a mix of suburbs of varied income and sort of farm areas, I'd guess you'd say, hinging on the Pine Barrens.
-The entire state is NOT a suburb. Or, more, it's different kinds of 'burbs that compose the real "Jersey", ranging from older and close-in to more exurban. But we also have some big cities like Newark, the Oranges, Paterson, Jersey City, Elizabeth, etc. even if they're not much culturally.

Are the pine barrens the closest thing the East has to a desert?

I suppose so. It's just pineys and retirement communities and abandoned iron-mining villages. It's rather eerie and barren-looking driving through them going down shore.

Any other Jersey questions?

Once a month or two. There's not much there to interest me in some ways. The gentrification can make me sick sometimes.

Yes. Well, there are certain words we use. Like we say "down shore" for going to the beach and we say "d'ya know what I mean?" every two seconds. And we don't know how to change our own gas, we can still name hair metal songs in the '00s, and we have an amazing knowledge of malls and parking. We have an accent in the New York family, but it's flatter and more rhythmic, clear, and consistent than say a Queens/Brooklyn/Shaolin/Longgisland accent. We also curse an obscene amount.

There's also a Jersey look. On guys it's a backwards baseball cap and a baggy t-shirt with chain jewelry and a gelled haircut. On girls it's obscenely messed-up big neo-'80s trashy hair, capris, varsity jackets, and fake designer purses.

You have two Supreme Court Justices, too.  I understand that Scalia and Alito are both Jersey Boyz.  I think I have long lost 2nd or 3rd cousins roaming around in the Newark area.  NJ doesn't have a baseball team, I am looking for a team to root for. What does a state without a major league team do during the
season?

Have you ever been to a New Jersey Devils game yet?

Subject: Re: Ask Me ANYTHING About Jersey

-Alito's son and daughter actually go to school a few towns over from me. Scalia and Alito are both from Trenton, actually.
-The Stone Pony still exists, and Bruce Springsteen shows up there occasionally with his E-Street Band, I think.
-I'm not a hockey fan.
-People like the Yankees. Though the Newark Jackals are our local minor league team. People near Philly like the Philadelphia baseball team.
-The Jersey Shore varies. Alot of it is increasingly crowded with condos and such. Wildwood and Asbury Park and Atlantic City are pretty sleazy, then there're day resorts like Long Branch and some other Monmouth County towns, there's Lakewood-Bradley Beach which are Jewish, Cape May which is super-historic and beautiful, Long Beach Island which is pretty isolated and community-centered, and Bay Head and Sea Girt and Spring Lake which are snooty. But alot of it is still pretty fun and unpretentious. We always used to go to Long Branch alot.

Typically utterly gorgeous if a bit rainy in the fall and spring, chilly/windy/icy with some heavy snow in the winter and much malaise, and very humid in the summer.

I leave Jersey maybe once or twice a month during the school year to go to NYC or its NY 'burbs. I've been to Massachusetts and Connecticut a few times, that's probably the non-NY/NJ state I've been to the most. This summer I'm probably going to San Francisco, though.

We were planning on going a trip to just the Western States, but as usual, it didn't work out. I'm planning on going when I graduate uni.

SF's my hometown ... it's quite a fascinating city.  Believe it or not, I've spent almost zero time downtown there, even though I've probably visited there like at least 30 times.  It's very, very, densely populated, even more so than NJ.

San Francisco is possibly the most romantic city in North America (not from a 'lovey dovey' like Paris) but a sort of artistic, bohemian romanticism. I wouldn't mind living there actually, if I could, whereas I don't think I'd want to live in L.A. The Downtown's also got a really queer climate (not pun intended); very cool and foggy, with frequent climatic changes.

Is your family made of native SF-ans or were they transplants? I think San Fran rivals Manhattan for most densely populated area, closely followed by parts of East L.A., Chicago, and Jersey.

My mom is native San Franciscan, and her dad's family is San Francisan for several gens back.  My dad's family is from around Monterey Bay, and my mom's mom is English.

My dad's mom was German via England via the Bronx and Manhattan, though he is native Manhattanite. His dad is from Yonkers and has one parent from Syracuse (immigrants from Poland) and one from the Lower East Side of Manhattan. My mom's mom is from the Bronx, but lived like half her life in Jersey and her parents are both from the LES but Polish and Lithuanian. My mom's dad was native Jerseyite (Newark) with Ukrainian parents, and my mom is native Jerseyite. Why did your family leave Cali?

My parents got divorced, so we moved to Montana in 1998.  In 2001, we moved to Oregon, where I currently reside.

Ah...why Montana? It isn't very similar to San Francisco. I myself have second cousins in San Francisco. A surprising amount of my second cousins live in Massachusetts and Northern California, drawn there either by hippieism or tech. I also have some in Texas (goyim), and a few in Jersey. Most of my third cousins still live in Jersey and NY.
