i bet it does, they probably have a gift shop down there.

i grew up in texas. are they ever gonna figure out that highway system?

i was in fort worth last year and saw a little theater adaptation of "mars needs women," which was set in houston but they adapted it so it was set in fort worth for home-town purposes.

is it true san antonio's almost as nice as austin? i hear good things but i haven't been since i was a kid back in the 1830s.

I'm not sure what you mean..

I've never been to San Antonio, but I can tell you Austin is cool.

Do y'all have any standard lettering on your keyboards? That's same odd collection of symbols you've got for a name!

Yes, we do.  IF you have Windows XP, go to Start>All Programs>Accesories>System Tools>Character Map.

I have XP - does that mean I should see all the letters nicely deciphered?

No.  That means you can go to the Character Map and find all of them and more, thats what I did then I copy and pasted. :)

It still says "Master Of Reality".

houston has probably the most convoluted highway system of any city other than los angeles. i remember it being a problem even when i was a kid, it was real easy to get lost.

Ah, yeah.  Still that way pretty much.. you're originally from Houston?  I lived there before, thats where I went to High School.

Alex, does this mean you have that superb Texan drawl accent?

I am sorry to dissappoint you Jules, but I don't.  I'm monotone.. kind of the SoCal "announcer voice" sound.  Sometimes there will be a certain word I'll say that has a bit of an accent on it, but not much.

it all started when I was a small child, and I used to watch Yellow Submarine all the time, and The Hobbit(the cartoon from the 70s).. :D

things i remember about San Antonio when i lived there a long time ago were fireflys, Piggly Wiggly stores, and lots of pecan trees, and we were within walking distance from the Alamo.

-No.

-I'd guess the Praire country.. not sure though.  I was born in Dallas, grew up in northeast Texas, and went to highschool in the Houston area.  None of these fit the stereotype of Texas exactly.. only central and west Texas do(i.e. Western culture, arid etc.).  The eastern half of Texas seels more southern than Southwestern.  Infact the Houston area feels akin to South Louisiana.

I just stumbled across some Texas trivia and wondered if you have ever heard of this incident::
"In February 1982, former Black Sabbath leader Ozzy Osbourne urinated on the Alamo. He was arrested, charged with defiling a national monument and banned from performing in San Antonio. The ban was eventually lifted.  8)

As for San Antonio being almost as nice as austin-it depends of what you mean by "nice". I lived in San Antonio for 7 LOOOOOONG years and absolutely hated it-but then again, I'm a Yankee.  ;D  There were two seasons-hot and hotter (but there are some people who thrive in the heat-but I'm not one of them). The crime rate was unbelievable. But to be fair, I will say that there are a lot of interesting things there-the Alamo for one as well as other old missions. There is also the River Walk, Sea World (I used to live less than 5 miles from Sea World and when they had their grand opening, my entire neighbor went outside to watch the fireworks.) It has been many, many years since I have been there so things could have changed.

Is Texas more Dixie or North Mexico?

Depends on where you're at.  Northeast Texas is still mostly Dixie, North Texas is still more Dixie as well.  The Houston area/Southeast Texas are Dixie but with a kind of South Louisiana feel too mixed with North Mexico(as you put it).  Central Texas is mixed between a Western and Mexican feel I'd say but I visited Austin and didn't really feel "Dixie". South Texas/the Rio Grande river valley is most definitely Mexican.  If you're white there you're a minority, in most of those towns the majority of people speak Spanish. West Texas is like New Mexico or Arizona, a Southwestern feel, but with a heavier Mexican element. El Paso is practically right next to Juarez. And I'm not too sure about what the panhandle is like.. it might be kinda like Oklahoma, but I'm not sure. ???

I've never watched it, and I don't really plan to. :D

Dinosaur parks man! dinosaur parks!

I like Galveston. Don't go during hurricane season though! also Johnson space center in Houston (mission control!), although I went a few years ago and it wasn't as cool as it was when I was a kid, it was kinda theme-park-y. they used to have a great little museum in the JSC but now it's all built up.

Also astroworld and six flags over texas. The Houston cyclone was notorious for being the scariest roller coaster in the world, dunno if it still is. Also gilley's, the biggest nightclub in the world, or at least it was. (better know how to two-step!) also the galleria in Houston, one of the largest indoor shopping malls in the world.

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/mapimages/north_america/houston/houston.gif

and you're missing out if you don't go to the funeral museum. (Wtf IS that?!?)

also, the westernwear shops are pretty great.

In fort worth there's the stockyards. I wanted to go to waco and see the site of the branch davidian compound, I'm not sure if there's anything there to memorialize it.

Wow, thank you. Houston sounds more fun that Dallas. I dunno, that's just the impression I get.

I would totally be going to the Funeral Museum. I would die to go see it  ;D

The only time I spent in Texas was in the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. I could see Dallas from some of the windows, but I was surprised at how flat everything was.

Dallas might be more fun, I've actually never been. I think I mighta gone once when I was a little kid, don't remember anything about it. my relatives who live in fort worth all detest dallas for some reason.

DFW is pretty flat but Houston is TOTALLY flat. It gets flatter as you get closer to the gulf.

There's also a bunch of oil refineries along the highway stretching from Louisiana to Houston (highway 10? I forget.) not a tourist spot per se but very surreal to drive through at night, like a huge alien city.

Houston is a sh!thole.  And downtown sucks at night, it basically shuts down as all the people who work there during the day flee back out to the burbs.  Dallas is a much, much better town.

What are some of the best things to do in Texas?

Go to 6th Street in Austin, or Deep Ellum in Dallas.  The beaches suck, and if you are a fan of Six Flags they can be found in San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston but I hate amusement parks/rides.

my favorite vietnam vet bumper sticker: "Vietnam: We Were Winning When I Left."

seriously, when i left houston (which is, actually, a slohtihe, i should have pointed that out, yes, but i liked it when i was six), the galleria was the biggest mall, gilley's was the biggest nightclub, DFW was the biggest airport, i believe six flags over texas might have been the biggest theme park... and now none of that's true anymore.
