Subject: Ask me about porn

Written By: Mushroom on 10/28/06 at 11:25 am

I think you should start your own thread.. "Ask Me Anything About Porn" . You sure seem to know a lot about it. :P

Well, as they used to say on the old TV show: YOU ASKED FOR IT!

OK, now let's get semi-serious here.  Don't go asking me for phone numbers, or how to contact the people involved.  But who knows, maybe if I don't know it, somebody else will.

Why do the women always have to wear high heels?...I mean...JUST high heels and nothing else?  To me that is extremely tacky (as is all other aspects of porn, IMO)....and I find nothing of it a turn-on. ::)

Well, this is something I learned when I was working in a strip club.  And since most actresses in adult films started as strippers (excuse me, "Exotic Dancer"), it is only natural that a lot of them continue doing this.

When women wear high heels (and men too, although we rarely do that), it makes them walk differently.  It makes them walk with their shoulders thrown back a bit, making their chest stand out more.  And it also exagerates the placement of their feet, making their hips sway more.

A lot of people do not notice how men and women walk differently.  Men tend to walk with their feet moving straight out in front of each other ("gorilla walking").  Women on the other hand (especially if they are accentuating their hips) tend to walk placing one foot in front of the other ("cat walking").  This has the effect of accentuatiing the sway of their hips (and bottom) more then a "normal" walk.  High heels just accentuate this more, and often give a "sexier" look.

Of course, I would not expect most women to respond to the swaying of the hips of another woman the way we men do.  Much the same way that most men (myself included) do not get into looking at the "tush" of other men.  But it is something that a lot of women seem fascinated with.  ::)

thanks for explaining that...I never thought of it from that aspect before.  I can totally see the whole "walking in high heels to look sexy" thing...it's just that when they are doing the actual "act" and they still have their high heels on....it makes me wanna laugh. :D

Well, you have to realize that the vast majority of porn is oriented towards men.  That is even more so in the last 10-15 years.

In the 1970's, there was a period of "Porn Chic", especially after the movie "Deep Throat".  For a time, porn almost went "mainstream", and producers tried to make the movies more funny, almost a form of an adult "date movie".  Humor and storyline became more involved, and things like rape and humiliation largely became "tabboo".  Also parody and satire became a major seller.

However, that only lasted for a few years.  Movies like "The Opening Of Misty Beethoven (basically a porn version of "My Fair Lady") and "Alice In Wonderland - The Musical" (yes, a comedy musical porn movie based on "Alice In Wonderland") were only popular for a few years, then by the late 1970's gave way to movies with less plot and more action.  Lesbianism and orgies became a big seller, with an almost mandatory scene in almost every movie.

Movies in this era actually slipped into a "formula".  Opening scene, secondary scene, lesbian scene, last couple scene, close with an orgy.  Most of the movies from the late 1970's until the early 1980's all seemed to follow this pattern.  And of course almost all were "screwball comedies", normally a parody of another movie or TV series.  We had "Blazing Zippers", and a slew of "Johnny Wadd" movies, normally all parodies of TV or movies (one was a combination of "Charlie's Angels and "The Maltese Falcoln", another was a parody of "The Six Million Dollar Man").

If you have ever seen "Boogie Nights", you can actually see the evolution of porn from the mid 1970's until the late 1980's.  They compress the time quite a bit, but it is a fairly accurate portrayal of the changes.  Starting with the more silly 1970's, and ending with the form of "Gonzo" that started in the last 1980's.

When I was dating my late fiancee, she had never seen an adult movie.  She told me she was curious, so I went out and had to spend at least 45 minutes until I found a movie I would be willing to let her see.  Afterwards, I would normally pick up one a month or so and we would watch it together.  Most of the ones I got were from the mid 70's to mid 80's.  It is actually rather hard to find a movie that is "date friendly", since most are rather low in "erotic encounters".  Most tend to be more like "slutty encounters", since they are almost universally aimed at single men.  Andrew Blake was really the only one making "quality porn" by the early 1990's.

and what's up with the spewing of copious amounts of fluid everywhere.. and I'm not just talking about the men...!

Well, that actually has a few different sources.

Originally it started simply as a way to show the guy had finished.  Hence, the term "The Money Shot".  Early on, it basically resembled somebody performing "coitus interruptus".

"Bukkake" actually came from Japan, and means "To Splash".  It started because of Japanese porn laws, which refuse to show the genitals or pubic hair.  The norm is to have a moasic censor blurr over such areas, but "The Splash" style made it obvious what was happening, even through the censor bluring.

As for women, we can thank Dr. Gr

That is pretty much the case already.  And it really started in the 1980's with the advent of the VCR.

In the 1970's, there was a large chain of adult theaters called "The Pussycat".  There were over 20 of them in LA alone, and another 20-30 smaller single location theaters.  New York - New Jersey also had a chain of "Pussycat Theaters", but not connected since the originator of the chain did not copyright the name or images used to advertise them.  And most larger cities had a number of adult theaters as well.

But by 1984, they were on their way out.  By 1990, almost all of them were gone.  The VCR pretty much killed them, allowing people to watch whatever they wanted in the privacy of their own home.  This decline was also spurred by incidents like Tracy Lords, who was one of the biggest "stars" of the era.  Overnight, a huge number of movies became illegal.  Zoning laws also started to be used to close them down.

By the time the Internet came along, the industry had already collapsed.  In all of LA-Orange County, there is only 1 Pussycat Theater left.  In fact, it is almost considered a form of "Revival Theater", since most of the movies shown there are around 20 years old now.  If anybody is in Hollywood, look on Western Ave between Sunset and Hollywood Blvds.  I used to live 3 blocks from there.  San Francisco has also been similarly decimated, with only the more "historic" theaters like the O'Farrell still standing.

Internet has largely replaced video tape as the distribution of choice however.  One reason is the lower cost.  Instead of making thousands of copies and the hastle of distribution and packaging, they now just put it on-line and you pay by credit card.

And what's with simulated sex these days?  ???

That has been around for ages.  Mostly, it is used to get around various "blue laws".

For example, in Japan it is illegal to show genitals.  So they either use a censor mosaic, or have so much "full body" contact, that nothing is seen.

It is similar in a number of states.  I know that in North Carolina, Idaho, and Alabama it is illegal to show sex.  So you have what is basically "cable versions" of porn movies.  This is pretty tame stuff, not much different from what you have been able to see in cable for decades.

Then there are areas that forbid the showing of ejaculation.  There is a new sub-set of porn that actually shows everything but that.

Of course, then you have the opposite.  The Brown Bunny was a 2003 movie by Vincent Gallo.  It debued at Cannes, to some shocked reactions.  His then girlfriend Chlo

And what about those HBO,Cinemax Adult Late Night Specials?

Well, in the early days of cable, these were frequently heavily edited "hard core" movies.  Way back in the early 1980's, LA had 2 competeing "over the air" movie channels.  These ran on UHF frequencies, and used a decoder box to vew.  Most of the time they showed things like Star Wars, and other movies just like HBP and the rest.  But late at night, they showed movies with the explicit sex edited out.  I remember when I was in High School seeing "Little Orphan Dusty" like this.  I saw it again a few years later on Video, and realized the first one I saw was the same, just edited.

In the mid to late 1980's, you started to see the rebirth of "soft core" porn, aimed at the cable market.  Instead of being heavily edited, these were filmed from the beginning for the cable market, with loads of "simulated sex".  HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax bought a lot of these, as did the Playboy Chanel in the early days.

OK, I am going to tackle the posts from this weekend all in one shot.

who are the oldest actors/actresses in porn today and how old are they, if you happen to know this?  8)

Well, the oldest actor is probably Ron Jeremy.  The oldest Actress is probably Christy Canyon (who comes in and out of retirement every few years).  Men in the industry sometimes have amazingly long careers, sometimes lasting 20-30+ years.  Women on the other hand rarely last more then 2-5 years.

And now, the trend is for even younger women.  IN the 1980's, it was not unusual to see women in their late 30's and even 40's.  Now that is something you almost never see.

Why did Ron Jeremy turn into a fat slob?  Does he still do Porn now?  I wouldn't think there'd be any ladies screaming to see a middle aged fat guy take it all off ;D

That happened in the early 1990's.  With the move to video, there was much less demand on the movies (or actors) looking good, it was all about the sex.  Also at that time he moved to the producer-directors chair, making much less appearances then he did before.  In the late 1990's, he started to appear on film again, and the years were not kind to him.  He was also an early mover to the "Gonzo" form, which often made it harder for his actresses to move into more "conventional" porn.

what do you know about the porn industry that is being managed by and geared toward women? Is that a small faction? Has it had much success?

There are a few of them out there, but not many.  One of the earliest was Andrew Blake.  His early movies tended more to the "sensual" then "sexual".  He also did a series of lesbian features, staring Aria Giovanni.  His movies tend to be more "dreamy", with soft lighting, heavy use of diffusers, and more attention to the body then the action.

Viv Thomas is very similar.  He is English, and while most of his movies tend towards lesbian erotica, he also does heterosexual and a few "kink".  Like Blake, he also uses diffusers, soft lighting and shadows, and storylines that seem more like a soap opera or romance then a porn movie.

Asia Carrera is an actress that has since moved on to form her own production company.  Once a star of many of Andrew Blake's movies, she makes movies in a similar style, but a little more raunchy.  And at 33, she was one of the oldest women still acting.  She is retired at the moment, because of the birth of her son in July, just one month after the death of her husband.  Many are wondering if she will ever return

Do you like porn with a storyline?

LOL!  Actually, for me it has to have a story line.

I often watch the movies from the "golden age", and find them very entertaining.  For the most part, I view them as a form of racey comedy.  Harry Reems for example was one of the funniest actors I have ever seen, in or out of porn.  He was not all that good looking, kind of a porn version of Christopher Lloyd.  But he was a great actor, and his characters almost always left me rolling in laughter.  The early Ron Jeremy also had this talent, often changing her personality to fit the role.  Since retiring from porn, Harry Reems has converted to Christianity (he was born Jewish), and now sells real estate in Utah (he actually uses Harry Reems, and not his birth name Herbert Streicher on his business cards).

Actually, actors like Ron are almost a staple in porn.  If you look at all of the actors, you will find that young good looking guys are rather rare.  For every Jerry Butler you find 2 or 3 like Harry Reems.

And part of this is in the psychology.  Since porn is aimed at guys, they can watch them and fall into the fantasy.  They watch, and figure "Hey, if that fat slob can score with that young good looking hottie, maybe I have a chance."

And don't forget, porn is basically a business.  The average daily wage for a porn actress is between $750-3,000+, depending on name recognition and the type of scene.  And going on camera with a porn "legend" is an easy way to get your name known and recognized.  However, in recent years appearing with Ron Jeremy has actually been a minus to most women.  In more recent years is style is pretty much "Gonzo", and very demeaning to women.

However, he is reported to be amonst the highest paying producers, and money will make a lot of people do things they normally would not do.

Didn't Candida Royale start her own company , specializing in porn and sex toys made by women for women? I had read about that before.

Yes she did, but it was not very successful.  She only produced 14 movies, the last in 1999.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0747263/

This is not all that unusual.  And a lot of actors and actresses allow their names to be attached to "toys".  It is an easy way to get more money, and it works off of their name recognition.  Sharon Kelly did much the same thing, but moved into doing "back office" production work.

LOL!  Again, a lot of this is not very different from regular films.  The different areas of film making are actualy very similar.  And both porn and mainstream feed off of each other.  I have quite a few friends in various aspects of the movie industry, and a few that have worked in porn.  And as part of a film group I was in back in the early 1990's, I actually did a project comparing the two.

One of the things that shocked me was how a lot of porn was really just comedy.  There are very few porn movies that worked off of "horror" or "drama".  Most used comedy as their driving force.  And in a vast majority of them, parody was where the storyline came from.  And being a lover of both comedy and parody, it is not to surprising that I enjoy watching them.  In fact, I often times find myself skimming past the sex scenes, to continue with the story.

Why in those softcore films do you see guys and girls covering their hands over the crotch to make believe that they're pleasuring their partners?

Once again, it is to get around various "blue laws".  This is especially seen since the advent of Cable, where the restrictions are in place by the FCC.

This is exactly where the terms "hard core" and "soft core" came from.  As late as the 1970's, most areas had restrictions against showing an erect penis.  Playgirl is a perfect example of this.  It was not until the mid 1980's that Playgirl tried to shot a male in any state other then relaxed.  In these aspects, the hands (or other prop devices) are used to conceal what may (or may not) be happening.

It is kinda similar to the Tonya Harding or the Pamula Anderson tapes.  They were never intended to be released, but they ended up getting released through "other means".

The tape was somehow acquired by David Hans Schmidt, a seller of sex tapes featuring celebrities.  In the past, he has sold tapes with the likes of Colin Farrel, Jamie Foxx, OJ Simpson, Tonya Harding, and Paris Hilton.  And it has been proven that sueing him to stop the distribution does no good, since he will release them anyways up and until the date the judge signs the order (which takes weeks if not months).

There is to much tragedy and death in our world to begin with.  I refuse to even consider seeing a death as "entertainment".  And I think anybody that would want to see something like that to be seriously disturbed.

Snuff films are actually an urban legend for the most part.  They actually were started because of a 1971 book about the Manson Family.  In the book Family: The Story of Charles Manson's Dune Buggy Attack Battalion, the author says that they had made snuff films.  However, this was never proven, and the reference in the book is the only one on record.

After this, there were a few "horror movies" made which only spread the legend.  The 1976 movie Snuff was loosly based on the Manson family, and depicted a snuff film in it.  And it has continued to grow ever since then.

Currently, the only suspected real "snuff films" were seized in 2000, entering Italy from Russia.  The films were mostly pedographic in nature, and it has been believed that at least one of them was snuff in nature.  However, the Italian Government has refused to comment on this, and also refused to allow anybody to see the tapes siezed.

Myself, I believe they are a myth.  However, there have been many "fake snuff" films floating around for years.  There is actually an (in)famous series from Japan that is called "The Guinea Pig".  However, these are all faked, and are little more then extreme S&M movies.

No.  Orgasms are a physical reaction to what's happening.  I'm sure there's been times when women have actually had one on screen.

That would be most of them.

Especially in Gonzo, the industry often thrives on youth.  18 and 19 year old actors and actresses come and go all the time in porn.  And rmemeber, not every country has an "age of conscent" of 18.  In some countries, 16 and 17 is old enough to appear in porn movies.

Young actors and actresses come and go in that industry all the time.  Most of them get burned out fast too.  Drug addiction is still a rampant problem, and suicide is not all that uncommon.

What is gonzo?  ???

"Gonzo" is basically an extreme form of porn, with an "amateur" feel to it.  Kinda like what Jack Horner was doing at the end of "Boogie Nights" when he picked up a guy at random and taped him with Rollergirl.

The trend really started with "Bus Stop Tales" in 1990.  In it, the protagonist (Ed Powers) would supposedly approach a girl at a bus stop, and procede to talk her into going home with him and have sex in front of a camera.  Now there were all staged, but they were made very amatuerishly.  A lot of people actually believed they were real.

When Internet came out, this form really began to flourish.  Series like MILF, Bang Bus, Boob Squad, Latine Maids, and a lot of others work off of this concept.  And most of them tend to protrey women as either stupid and/or sluts.  Most of them are very degrading towards the women in them, and there is no attempt at plot or sensuality.

In fact, the Bang Bus normally works the same way.  Pick up a random girl, talk her into having sex (sometimes for money), then berate and put her down the entire time.  Then afterwards, abandon her on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere.  The term "Dirty Sanchez" actually came from one of the Cameramen of the series.

http://www.miaminewtimes.com/issues/2004-10-14/feature.html

One of the reasons why it is popular on the internet is because it is high on action, and low on plot.  It is also very cheap to produce, with an average production cost of under $5,000.  Most of the actresses are college girls or strippers that do it to make extra money.  While the owners of the site are now filthy rich (most estimates place the value of the company in excess of $3 million), the average pay for the actress is around $1,000.

Myself, I find nothing at all entertaining about this.  It is grossly exploitive, and degrading to women.  I find absolutely nothing erotic about seeing a woman being told to bark, then calling her names, only to kick her out in the middle of nowhere with no money.

I've heard of this series.. didn't they inspire one man who killed little girls?

Tsutomu Miyazaki is a mass murderer who is awaiting execution in Japan.  Between 1988 and 1989, he killed 4 girls, between the ages of 4 and 7.  He did hve a collection of the first 5 Guinie Pig movies, but they were only part of a 5763 tape collection that covered a large variety of topics.  He was also diagnosed of having multiple personality disorder and extreme schizophrenia, but the court determined that he was sufficiently aware of what he was doing to be executed.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsutomu_Miyazaki

I really don't see any connection, since he was obviously very disturbed in the first place.  I simply can't assume just because he saw something as disturbing as this, that it made him do the murders.  Much like the famous "Citizen X" murders, he was in serious need of help even before he did the crimes.

After all, I have seen Matchstick Men many times, but have never had the desire to become a grifter.  I have also repeatedly watched the original The Italian Job, but never had the desire to rob a bank.  I love the GTA series, but have never wanted to go around town killing people.

While this may be granted as true, Miyazaki used this particular MO for a reason.
Then again, anyone dubbed as a serial murderer has need of help prior to committing the deeds.
He claimed he "was into little girls, because he could control them better".

Japanese porn is often very degrading.

When I first went to Japan in 1988, I was walking through town and decided to take a look in a video store.  Now this was just a normal local video store, where they rented all kinds of movies.  And on one of the shelves (not even closed off from the rest of the store), they had rows upon rows of porn movies.  And most of them evolved around Bondage, S&M, or rape.  For some reason, melting wax was very popular.

And the Anime is often very similar.  Now I am a big lover of Japanese Animation.  I have a large collection, ranging from "teen Shows" like Love Hina and movies like Kiki's Delivery Service and Metropolis, to "adult titles" like New Angel, Buttobi CPU, Golden Boy, and F3.  And the adult ones I have are among the most tame availible.  Anybody who has seen La Blue Girl will know what I mean.

Tenticle Rape, snuff, extreme S&M, golden showers, public humiliation, these are all common in a lot of adult oriented anime.  Most of the more extreme ones tend to follow a path where a bitchy woman is given 'what she deserves".  Living Sex Toy Delivery is a good example of this.  The series started with a man being kidnapped, used as a sex object, then being left to die.  Over the series, he kidnapped each woman in turn, abused her, destroyed her mind, then abandoned her nude in a public place.

http://www.hentaineko.com/html_peek/peek_anime_livingsextoydelivery.shtml

I think that the tight laced nature of Japanese society tends to bring out this extreme "Madonna-Whore" complex.  Young girls need to be forced into sex, yet even while they deny it they love it.  Women are treated as objects, to be used purely for the pleasure of the men, no matter how degrading.

What do you mean by indulging?  Merely watching it or trying to replicate what they see on screen with their partners?  I don't think watching porn is a big deal.  If it gets to the point where it's taking over your life and you neglect your responsibilites so you can go beat off, then that's a problem.

Plenty of married women watch pornography too, so it's not like it's just a medium for married men.

basically what I meant was doing it in such a way that one would consider it to be more of an addiction, to where it hurts the person they are with, and no matter how many times they say they are going to quit...they never do. Instead, they do it in secrecy and try to hide things, etc.

why do married men continuously hurt their wives by indulging in this crap?

Why do men hurt their partners by doing anything?

This is more about human nature and destructive behavior then about pornography itself.  I never really indulged in it when I was in a relationship, because it simply was not needed for me.  Besides, I have always been more "mentally tuned" then visually.  Myself, I would much rather read a sexy story then watch a movie of two people getting it on.

I rented a porn movie exactly one time with my ex-wife, and it was because she said she was curious.  She picked it out, and thought it was one of the funniest and grossest things she had ever seen.  But it was not something she had any desire to see again, so I did not get another until many years later after we broke up.

My fiancee also expressed an interest to me about 10 years later, so I picked up one, and we both enjoyed it.  Especially when she was in the later stages of pregnancy, we would cuddle up on the couch and watch one together.  But it was never an "obsession" for either of us, just something we did once a month or so if the mood was right.

And even today, it is hardly an obsession with me.  I have maybe 50 or so movies on my hard drive, most of them from the 1970's or early 1980's.  But I would still much rather read a story or book then watch it.  Or pull out one of my 400+ "regular" DVDs.  Somebody that is addicted to porn in my eyes is not much different then somebody addicted to gambling, cheating, internet addiction, or much anything else that disrupts a marriage.

What are some films would you recommend that are more sensual than sexual (with somewhat of a plot)?

Almost anything by Andrew Blake, or Viv Thomas.  For Andrew Blake, I would reccomend the Night Trips series, Wet Dreams, or Secrets.  Viv Thomas is mostly known for lesbian erotica, but Room Service is one of his movies that is about half lesbian and hald heterosexual.  However, all of Viv Thomas' movies tend to be very sensual.

When it comes to the "Classic Films", it is often harder.  This is because most of the plots tend to revolve around a comedy.  The Opening Of Misty Beethoven has long been considered a classic, for many reasons.  So is Delicious, with Desiree Cousteau and Veronica Hart.  There are many others with plots, but I find them hard to describe as "sensual" because of some of the content.  Behind The Green Door has a lot of sensual elements, but it also revolves around a (possible) rape, and there is some male homosexuality.  Little Orphan Dusty is similar, with several very sensual scenes.  But the movie opens with a rape to open the setting.  "Every Woman Has A Fantasy" is often considered to be a classic "sensual" from the mid 1980's, complete with a Burt Reynolds look-alike, and the male star crossdressing to learn women's secrets (a'la Tootsie).  The "Taboo American Style" series was actually filmed in the style of a "TV Miniseries", with a twisted plot around fame, money, and revenge.  But the incest nature of the story also makes it hard to reccomend.

Many times in movies from the 1970's, rape was used as a "plot device", to introduce the characters together.  Even knowing this, I find it hard to seriously reccomend a movie with rape in it, as I find it very distastefull and objectionable.

The problem with the older films is that they are very hard to find.  Most of the older companies from the 1970's and early 80's have gone bankrupt, and the ownership of the films is impossible to trace, making legal reprints impossible.  This is also because of the "Traci Lords" scandal.  When it broke that she was underage in all of her films, it resulted in the destruction of thousands of other movies.  This is because it was standard at tthe time to include "Trailers" of other movies.  So not only was every movie she was in destroyed, but every movie that had her in a trailer was also destroyed.  One company in particular (Dark Brothers) had her in either the feature or trailer of every movie they sold.  The company was shut down within months of the disclosure and all the movies (with one or two exceptions) are now out of print.

Could anyone retire from porn because their crotches get tired?   ;D

Actually, most quit because they become "burned out".  This industry is very hard on the people involved, most especially the women.  Drug addiction is rampant, and suicide is not unheard of.  In the 1970's and 1980's, it was not uncommon to see actresses in their 30's and even 40's.  Sharon Kelly was a conventional actress (appearing in TV shows like Lou Grant, and movies like Shampoo, Hustle, and Foxy Brown) before she entered porn in her mid 30's.  She only worked in porn for 6 years before retiring.  Today, most of the actresses come and go so fast, most are between 19 and 25.

I doubt you would find many actresses today that have been in more then 3-4 years.  And of those that are, most are their own producer-directors, so they determine their own schedules.  In the "classic era", a lot of actresses retired and have done well for themselves.  I know of at least 2 that went on to get medical degrees and continue with a fairly normal life.

The only "recent" actress I can think of that has tried this is Melody Damayo (Mimi Miyagi).  She retired 3 years ago after 13 years in the industry.  Earlier this year, she ran against Jim Gibbons for the Republican nomination for Governor of Nevada.  But unlike most who try to gget into office like Mary Carey, she says she is serious about it.  Considering she is retired, I tend to believe it.  Mary Carey mostly did it as a publicity stunt, and she is still currently making movies.

A lot of actors quit the porn industry for reasons that aren't physical.  Some want to get married/have families, some just don't want to do it anymore.

That was the norm at one time, but does not seem to be the case anymore.  Harry Reems, Desiree Costeau, and Veronica Hart all left at what was probably the height of their popularity.  They all pretty much got what they wanted, and moved on with their lives.  But you still have people like Ron Jeremy working, probably because there is nothing else he seems to want to do.

Today, they join all young and fresh, and when they have aged a bit are pushed out in favor of younger girls.  Mimi Miyagi was one of Ed Power' "discoveries" in 1990, and she worked for him for only a few years before she moved on.  He still makes movies specializing in young girls to this day.  Mimi was only able to continue because of the area of the market that specializes in Asian girls.  If she was Caucasian, she would simply have been one of the many that was discarded.

Most of the actresses today tend to come from strip clubs.  And when no longer wanted, that is where they return.  Some even make more money, traveling on the circut that specializes in former porn actresses.  Christy Canyon often does that between her various "retirements".  She has retired at least 3 or 4 times that I am aware of.

However, there are also several escourt services that specialize in working with porn actresses.  There is one they tried to bust a few years ago in LA, but could not.  Because they videotaped the "encounters" and sold that tape to the client, it was determined they were a "private movie service", and not a prostitution ring.  A very fine line to be sure.

Well, something like scriptwriting for any part of the porn industry is really something that does not happen.  Because the vast majority of porn movies are basically "independent films", the producer, director, and screenwriter are largely all the same person (or small group).

A lot of actors quit the porn industry for reasons that aren't physical.  Some want to get married/have families, some just don't want to do it anymore.

I guess some actors and actresses get old and their bodies aren't what they used to be.

It's when a guy penetrates a woman anally and then immediately has her give him oral sex, which supposedly gives the girl a "mexican mustache" via fecal matter.

That is when you finish having sex with a gal, then go and steal her hubcaps.

Hahaha, this is actually something I had started a while back as a joke.  And since I skated around the edges of the Adult Entertainment Industry, I had a bit more then the normal level of knowledge of how it all works.

And yes, I still do have a fascination for the old "Classic Porn" movies.  Although they are becomming harder and harder to find nowadays.

There's this guy I work with who's in his late 40s and going gray, and he decided to try putting some of that "Just For Men" stuff in his mustache and goatee. Needless to say, it was more than a bit too obvious, so I started calling him "Dirty Sanchez."

Ah, so Howard's a blumpkin man!

For those not following the history of the thread, there was a discussion of various tasteless sex acts.  Rule 34 demands that there exists at least one instance of porn of it, but apart from that, the Blumpkin, Donkey Punch, Dirty/Filthy Sanchez, and the Falcon Punch (not porn, but it falls into the same general category) are the canonical examples of acts that (apart from Rule 34) exist only on the internet as ongoing in-jokes, running gags, or more generally, as memes.

When in doubt about the meaning of anything, it can be found on the Urban Dictionary.

Well, that all depends on who is performing and who is the donkey.  :P

Clerks 2 had an unusual example, with a male performer, well, "servicing" the said animal.

The examples normally offered in places like TJ offer a human female performer.

And no, I have never seen one, nor do I want to.

But the incest nature of the story also makes it hard to reccomend.

i'd definitely recommend the rinse dream movies "cafe flesh" and "nightdreams," heavily plotted psychodramas and they're pretty tasty too.  :P also a movie called "bad girls" and a movie called "ultraflesh" (seka as an alien sexpot sent to save the world from a villainous penile dysfunction ray directed on earth by an alien supervillain). a movie called "the devil inside her" from the 70s i quite like, although it regularly goes too far and creeps me out. but it's got a plot and is actually inspired by scandinavian fairy tales.

Have either of them been in a pornographic movie?  ;D

Also, Prince's ex-grifriend Vanity made a movie called "Tanya's Island". (I haven't seen it) But would it be classified as soft porn, because I heard that there's quite a bit of nudity in it.

I am not aware of them making a movie, unless it is in the vein of R. Kelly's movie.  ;)

As far as "soft core", that is something that comes and goes.  But in reality, the term has basically lost it's meaning with todays ratings.  Movies like "Boogie Nights" that 25 years agou would have been X rated are barely blinked at as an R.  And even movies with real sex in them (Brown Bunny) get R ratings.

To be honest, porn today is absolute crap.

But I admit, that is only my own opinion.

Myself, I tend to view porn from the angel of somebody who is into erotica.  That is, somebody that appreciates the idea of sex, but is not obsessed about it.

I am a male, and I admit that I enjoy porn.  But I also enjoy good movies and literature.  If I was to try and watch a movie that was all violence or all humor, I would pretty much find it dull and boring.  To me porn is really no different.

If the movie is nothing but sex clip after sex clip, what is the point?  Might as well watch the first clip over and over again.  And part of the idea of story in the first place is to get us to identify with the character in the first place, is it not?

Back in the "Golden Age", story was a big consideration.  True, most of the movies were essentially comedies, but they were still considering story in addition to sex.  Today, the vast majority are nothing but sex.  I admit I occasionally look in "Adult Bookstores", and I honestly can say that not a single movie made interests me.  "4 Hours of XXX Mamacitas", or "The biggest black XXXXXXX You can imagine!" or "XXXX girls taking giant XXXX cXXs" holds absolutely no interest to me.

In short, Gonzo has taken over the industry.  And art and storytelling has gone by the wayside.  And even the "Not the" porn versions of satire can save them as far as I can see.

Nope, because they are not actually using the name, and it also falls under the "Fair Use" law that covers satire and parody.  The makers of the recent strings of parody films have been sued repeatedly for "Copyright Infringement", and each and every time had the lawsuit thrown out of court.

He is a producer of extreme porn who has been in and out of legal trouble for years.  In 2009 he was convicted and served a 3 year prison sentence for obscenity.

In 2007, Little and his company, Max World Entertainment, Inc., were indicted by the United States Department of Justice Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section with five counts of transporting obscene matter by use of an interactive computer service and five counts of mailing obscene matter, relating to five movies showing fisting, urination and vomiting. Little was subsequently found guilty on all charges, and sentenced to 46 months in prison. On appeal, the 11th Circuit Court in Atlanta, Georgia upheld the conviction, but remanded his sentence. Little began serving his sentence on January 29, 2009.

He wasn't the first to do the extreme gonzo stuff, but he was the first to push it into the mainstream.  He changed the industry for the worse.  Extreme gonzo caught on with porn customers who, I guess, are sexually enraged and hate women.  There are a lot of them because MH wannabes popped up everywhere in the 1990s.

Well, the biggest difference is that back then, they also had to be able to act.  Back in the "Golden Age", quite a few porn actors and actresses moved from mainstream movies to porn, or from porn to mainstream.  Kristine DeBell and Traci Lords come immediately to mind.  Back when these movies were shot on film and had real expenses involved with production and distribution, the performers really were actors.

Today, all you need is one guy with a camcorder and 1 or more people willing to perform on tape, and you have a porno.

I think most of the gold age performers would fail, because they were not "extreme" enough.  Not enough body art, body piercings, and a natural look, not the hyper-silicone-inflated fake Barbie doll look bad acting that is the norm today.

As for the body hair, that was just the style of the time.  Kind of like Burt Reynold's body hair or Tom Selleck's mustache or Gabe Kaplan's afro, that was just the norm of the era.

Like, Hi, Howard, Fer Shurr,

My, my, my!  I read about the "Bread-Soaking Game" AGES ago!  I can't believe that you never played that game with any guy friends years ago!

A group of guys would pin a piece of bread to a cork board, and then, each guy would try to, um, hold his fire, for as long as he could, and whenever somebody COULDN'T hold their fire, they'd feel as though they weren't the winner of the game.  When the last guy, who'd held his fire for the longest amount of time, finally soaked the already drenched piece of bread, he would believe himself to be the winner of the game...only to be ordered to eat the soaking wet piece of bread!

You can't tell me that you didn't at least play that game during high school, in college, or in an apartment/ club setting!

Of course, I never knew any guys who'd ever played that game...so I MIGHT believe you if you say that you never played that game before...LOL!
;)

Actually, I found it rather silly, and with some things that were rather...  tasteless.  However, it was one of the first 2 movies to go "mainstream", and set up the "Golden Age of Porn".  It was also the first movie to show women in control, and not as victims.

Let me put it this way:  Turn off the computer.  And the smartphone.  Put the iPad away.  Unplug the cable from the TV, because 9 1/2 Weeks was a fun movie, but that was as explicit as things got, even on cable.  On broadcast TV, you couldn't even see a boob.  Now ask that question again.

And try not to ask how the hell people of our generation got anything out of waiting 5 minutes in the hopes that video like this would somehow resolve itself into a boob :)

http://www.galeon.com/regy/archivos/principal/ssavi.jpg

The answer is "VHS pr0n is the bestest thing ever in the history of ever!  It's like pr0n in magazines, but the pictures are moving!"  And back in the day, the magazines were... well... also the bestest thing in the history of ever:

http://i.imgur.com/Hypl2yo.jpg

Same as Internet pr0n (which was like VHS pr0n, but you didn't have to pay for it nor wait for your wife (if you were a silent or boomer) or friend's parents (if you were an Xer) to go away so you could bring your VCR over to your friend's house to copy the tapes.  Nobody under the age of 30 has ever been more than a mouse click away from seeing any pr0n they wanted.

Same as the holodeck, when someone invents it.  (And in 2025, someone will wonder how the hell any of us ever got anything out of looking at animations displayed on a flat screen without a neurolink.)

Back in LA in the day there were 2 services, OnTV and SelecTV.  Both were "Over The Air" paid services, kinda like HBO for people who lived in areas that did not have cable yet.  However, the signals were broadcast through UHF, and you needed a scrambler box to see them clearly.  But I remember sometimes late at night watching a picture like yours there, watching some edited softcore release of a porn movie hoping to see something.

Today, with everything available with the click of a mouse, porn is very different.

Well, that is one way to phrase it, and yes that is the movie.

Why did they used to call "Gonzo" porn and what is Gonzo? ???

Gonzo porn started in the early 1990's, with such series as "Buttman" and "Bus Stop Tales", and took it's name from Gonzo Journalism.  This is where the film producers themselves are part of the action.  POV shots and interaction between the girl and the producer-crew is typical in this genre.

I'll amplify on Mushroom's take.

Before Gonzo, there was a semblance of a plot.  If you had a plot to your movie, however thin, you could claim it was an artistic work.  That got you some leeway in the Miller Test: If it doesn't lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value, it's OK if it appeas to the prurient interest and/or is a patently offensive depiction of sexual conduct.

A series of court decisions lightened those standards over the decades since 1973, and gonzo was the result: "Look, here's people having sex.  You want wall-to-wall-YOUR-FETISH-HERE?  Fine.  Now that we aren't shooting on expensive film, now that videotape and digital make shooting video dirt cheap, we're not going to waste an hour of our (expensive - the lighting guy, the sound guy, the sets guy...) time trying to get 5 minutes of scene-setting or trying to have these people utter more than a few words of dialogue!  We're going to give someone a handicam and fill the damn tape with naked people doing the boingy-boingy.  In fact, I'm gonna fire the cameraman, too!  I'll hold the damn camera myself!"

Yea, staring Ron Jeremy.

Why is it in softcore porn or like those HBO or Showtime adult late night shows, they don't show much like when a guy or girl cups his hand to simulate the sex?

This dates back to FCC rules.

The tradition since the early days of cable was limited to R rated movies.  No actual sex, "soft core" movies, simulated sex.  And because of jurisdictional rules this is still the norm to this day.  And HBO was not interested in breaking this tradition, and risk loosing distribution in states where pornography was illegal.

Then you had companies like The Playboy Channel which followed the same formula, just showing those soft core (ore edited hard core) movies 24-7.  But by the late 1990's you had full porn movies on satellite, and that pretty much changed all the rules.

Today they are pretty much ignored, even though technically they are supposed to block any broadcasts of say full porn in Utah if you are a DirecTV subscriber.  However, nothing stops a person from saying they live in Nevada when they start their subscription and getting it all anyways.  Ot just getting it on the Internet.

Plus these movies are still made for distribution overseas in countries where the laws are more strict.

Which is, itself, kinda funny.  In 2009, someone wondered which states had the biggest pr0n businesses, and it turned out that the redder the state, the more likely it is to have people who actually pay for pr0n, and Utah is #1 in that department.

I am not surprised.  I know of one other movie in that list which is actually a real title, but I could not resist throwing it in.  I remember because a guy came in the pawn shop I worked at one day and tried to sell us a box of around 50 porn movies, and that was one of them.  And the name always stuck with me for some reason (and no, we did not buy the tapes).

I do not like it when women are degraded or treated like objects or worse.

If you look at a lot of the movies in the classics era, quite often the women were the ones in charge.  Deep Throat and The Opening of Misty Beethoven come immediately to mind there.  Most of them had very strong female characters, with the exception of the "Daffy Oblivious" types, such as was often played by Desiree Cousteau (Pretty Peaches).

Today, the market is absolutely flooded with what to me seems horribly exploitive.  Women are nothing but objects to be used for sex, and are disposable and interchangeable.  Reality Kings seems to thrive on this, with series like "Bang Bus", where they "pick up" a female, promise her money in exchange for sex, then kick her out with no money on the side of the road (sometimes taking all of her clothes and even her purse as they leave).

This is the cesspool of what most of "modern porn" has become, and I can't stand it.

I think one of the best things about the "classic era" is that storytelling really was important.  And in many ways it really was "Guerrilla Filmmaking".  Budgets were small, but stories were still important as a way to get past a lot of the obscenity laws.  And a lot of the films were actually quite good in and of themselves, although the sex did not hurt either.  ::)

And a lot of conventional filmmakers got their start in porn.  Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th) got his start making porn films, as did Wes Craven.  And a great many others are rumored, but the use of pseudonyms means most are never really identified.

Exactly, storytelling was definitely important back then. You could tell a good story that leads to the sex. That's what gets people interested.

I would place it more like 1970-1992.  But the cracks were appearing by 1985, that is for sure.

What really started to kill it was the advent of videotape.  When it was made on film and distributed to theatres, you had to have story and real acting.  Making a 60-90 minute movie with film required real acting, and cost some real money to make and distribute.

Then in the mid 1980's we saw some "greatest hits" type tapes come out, where they were nothing but clips from movies with some narration thrown in to tie them all together.  And during the same period some movies were produced on videotape specifically for the video tape market, but were still made in the old style, with story and acting.

But by the end of the 1990's, that too started to change.  The adult theatres all died off, and videotape was the primary means of production and distribution.  And all attempts at story vanished, now shifting to the "240 minutes all sex" style.  Not even an attempt at story, just sex scene after sex scene, with girls who were largely anonymous and replaceable.

Lately there have been attempts at recreating the older style, with the XXX Parody movies, but even those are nowhere near the same.  The soft focus and any attempt at "romance" were gone, the setting was just a new hook to string the sex scenes together.

On a "classic movie", the sex to acting ratio was around 4 to 1, with 4 minutes of acting for every 1 minute of sex.  In modern movies with real acting, it is the reverse, 4 minutes of sex for every 1 minute of acting.  And they are only loosely playing to the nostalgia crowd, guys who wanted to see Shaggy get it on with Velma, or Tasha Yar getting it on with Data.  Mildly entertaining, but when I see one I fast forward through the sex scenes, trying to find any kind of story.

I actually think it is fine, but remember my take goes back primarily to the classic age.

There have been several big names in the industry who were black, Desiree West and Angel Kelly come immediately to mind.  Both were very hot, good actresses, and had long careers.

You know, I just realized something else.  If you're talking about film or even early videotape, this is content where how good the video looks is important, so you're talking about 60-90 minutes, which was typically broken up into 4-5 scenes of 10-15 minutes apiece.

Just as 74-minute CDs replaced 40-minute vinyl records (huh-huh, I almost said "12-inch"!) with the same 2-3 good songs, but the amount of filler expanded to fill the disc, we're now in the age when a DVD/Blu-Ray offers 2-4 hours of video, but because the performers get paid per scene (and because a 4-hour DVD costs the same as a 4-hour movie to distribute), there's incentive on the part of producers to fill all that extra time with 2-3 scenes... of 30-45 minutes apiece.

Unlike the days of film or videotape, diskspace (or streaming bandwidth) is free.  30 years ago, a skilled director could edit that 30-45 minutes of material down to the moments that actually matter, today's director (whose editing work also costs money) typically just lets the camera fill the alotted time, because the actors are paid the same amount either way.  So instead of seeing only those moments where the performers were actually working well, consumers get an effectively unedited stream of 5 minutes of bumping uglies in position X, another 5 in position Y, and all the moments were the actors have an expression on their face best described as "beige, I think they should have painted this ceiling beige"...

Nope.  I tried to find an image I could post here, but all I could find would get me some nasty words from moderators.  However, here is the description right from the Brazzer's web page (typo and all):

Ever since he wrapped things up with the evilest wizard in the land, Hairy's been causing all kinds of trouble. Even a second stay at Hogwarts School for Jizzards isn't helping. He's been tranforming his classmates into dildos, and conjuring up hot pieces of ass to bang. Check out his masterwork: a redheaded fudgedoll with big natural tits and a sweet ass for him to stuff full of his massive wand.

Trust me, there is no way I could make something like that up!

In the classic era, it was more like 10 minutes of dialog-acting, then 3-5 minutes of sex (often with acting and dialog in the middle).  Unlike today where 30 minute marathon single sessions are often common, back then it was quite condensed, with anything beyond 5 normally considered excessive.

In fact, in some movies short scenes often lasted less then a minute.  And no, I am not kidding.  In "The Opening of Misty Beethoven", you have an 84 minute film with an IAFD listing of 27 sex scenes.

http://www.iafd.com/title.rme/title=opening+of+misty+beethoven/year=1975/opening-of-misty-beethoven.htm

And many of them are just short inserts as part of the story, 10-15 seconds long each, several different ones in a row.

Nobody really knows who she was, or where she has gone.  She literally came out of nowhere, performed in 2 movies as the same character, then vanished.  Not to unusual in the industry, but she was so enigmatic because her only major movie also became one of the biggest hits in porn.

Most theories describe her as a drug using drifter hippie chick.  In fact, most theories of the time state that she had died of a drug overdose.  This was later shown to be false, but still nobody really knew who she was (this was before all the mandatory age and birth confirmation mandated after the Traci Lords scandal).

Since most actresses used stage names, quite a few simply vanished into normal life after they had short careers.  And the industry was full of girls that simply made 1 or 2 movies then were never heard from again.

In the seventies there were lots of x-rated drive-ins.  Don't forget the drive-ins.  A lot of towns wouldn't let theaters screen pornos in town, but you could set up a drive-in theater out in the sticks and show skin flicks.  I never went to one because they'd all died out by the time I was old enough.

Fans of the Golden Age will tell you you they liked the stuff with real acting and plots.  But let's face it.  Most of it was totally awful.  There were a few porn actors/actresses who could act, but most looked totally goofy, the plots were dumb, and the music was ridiculous.

Actually, they do not.  In general placing it on the rail or on the stage is the accepted etiquette to be used when tipping dancers.  And like anybody else, they are simply trying to make a living.

In most clubs, the dancer is only paid tips, and has to split them with the house.  Some clubs to pay a wage, but not many and rarely anything other then minimum wage.

And the one most notable exception to that rule has finally closed down, on account of its neighbors raising its rent.

I never understood the appeal of strip clubs as anything other than a place to hang out, drink beer with your friends, and see boobs in real-live-3D-humanvision in an age when the Internet didn't exist.  Still, I think we've lost something with the disappearance of a place like that.

Actually, I work right around the corner from there, and have walked by it a few times.  It is an ugly eyesore, trying to make it in a neighborhood where both Hustler and Penthouse have upscale clubs.  Lusty Lady was ugly the last time I went inside in 1991, and it is in even worse shape now, I refused to even walk inside last time I walked by it.

And no, I would hardly call it a "co-op".  That is just putting a fancy name on the fact that the 2 dancers are also the owners.  That is like I get a partner and we open a computer store together, and that makes it a "Co-op".

But actually, I have worked for a club that did pay the dancers a salary, as well as having a tip-sharing system.  In addition they offered medical-dental-vision, as well as 401K and free gym membership for all dancers (the rest of us got all benefits except for the gym membership).  But to me the salary was nothing, literally chump change when my tip-out at the end of a shift was normally from $150-350 a day (and that was as a DJ, dancers made considerably more, $1,500 days for them were not unheard of).

Good point.  The pictures in the linked articles were pretty horrifying; then again, so were the strip clubs I remember from my college days, and those were merely the sort of clubs that catered to those who wanted nothing more than to sit around a table in a dimly-lit bar drinking beer and eating wings while ogling boobs.  Table dances at the time were strictly no-contact which was, in retrospect, for the best for all concerned :)

Well, some of the gals knew when to get out, and did that.

After about 5 years, Kristara Barrington left the industry and is now a veterinarian.

Desiree Cousteau retired after 4 years, is now an accredited child psychologist.

Wendy O. Williams continued to perform with The Plasmatics.

And of course Harry Reems died this year, after spending the last decades as a real estate agent.

Jerry Butler is teaching tap dancing.

And of course Traci Lords is still trying to be...  Traci Lords.  B-movie actress and failed singer.  And interestingly enough, when the scandal about her age broke, some of her movies were recut to remove her, and instead scenes of Ginger Lynn were added.

That recent photo of...Ginger...makes me want to ask somebody to...NO, to DEMAND that somebody pass the barf bucket...IMMEDIATELY!  If I were a porn star, I'd go into retirement at about the age of 40, and I'd get a brand new career, and I'd bill myself as a completely different TYPE of person, saying, "Yea, I WAS 'Candy Fresh Kiss'...about 10 years ago, but NOW, I'm your local Avon lady!"

I mean...REALLY!
:o

It's like after your porn career is over you either wind up gaining weight, increase your boob size, get botox, face lifts, wrinkles, change hairstyle, lose hair or color your hair.

Or get all of them at once.

Traci Lords.  B-movie actress and failed singer.

That's kind of a shame about the singing career.

Couldn't act worth a damn (which didn't matter during her cameo on Married with Children), and yes, she cashed in on her name when she did the music thing, but I'm bummed that the music thing didn't work out.  1995's 1000 Fires and 2001's Last Drag were solid tracks.  File it along with one-album-wonders like Rachel Stevens' post-"S Club" solo career.

Actually, I remember her singing when she was still a porn actress!

Fast forward until 10 and 21 minutes in the movie, and you will hear her singing without all of the techno wizardry she had in her later career.  I remember my roomie renting this one night in the barracks (I owned a BETAMAX), and we both laughed at how serious she seemed to be when singing, and how horrible she was at it.  Of course at that time nobody was paying her to sing.

For a generic new wave cover band, the music's actually not that atrocious, but because autotune hadn't been invented yet, let the record show that she needed at least another 10 years of coaching to get that larynx into shape.  (Wait, I phrased that even more horrifyingly, didn't I?)

We are talking Traci Lords, not Linda Lovelace.  8)

And yea, I have heard some bands that were similar, but they never made it beyond "Slow bar Wednesday night" bookings.  Unless of course they had some kind of hook, like The Beat Farmers or GWAR.

I bet that if you took away all the technowizardry and effects and could hear her raw voice, it probably has not changed much.

Well, I can actually think of two.

One is "Inner Blues", from 1990.  It features a band which got some club play in Hollywood known as "Gutz", and had a pretty decent sound track, based upon a story similar to "A Star Is Born".

The other is from 1977, "Young Hot 'n Nasty Teenage Cruisers".

And for this movie they even released an album:

The movie was basically an adult version of American Graffiti, and actually featured some known Rockabilly performers like Ray Campi (performed with Buddy Holly, Bill Haley and Gene Vincent), Billy Zoom (founder of punk band "X"), and The Blasters (featuring Gene Taylor, and performed with Black Flag, The Cramps, and Dwight Yoakam).  This movie really did have a sound track worth having, especially if you are into early punk and rockabilly.

Yea, actually I did.  Mostly because I loved Malcolm McDowell.  It was not all that great, bears about as much link to reality as "Gladiator" does.

Wasn't it supposed to be a historical film?

In the modern era?  Pretty much all of them, because very few can actually "act" anymore.  Nowadays, acting not required, just screw on camera and looking good.

Of the older ones, I have to admit that Vanessa Del Rio was one I never liked.  If I saw her name up on the marque, I would likely keep going.

She always reminded me of a streetwalker who had simply walked off the street and made it in porn simply because she would do anything asked.  And yes, she actually was a hooker before she got in the business.

The quick progression after I left home at 16 was keypunch operator to computer programmer to waitress to barmaid to go-go dancer to streetwalker to call girl to PORN STAR! Woohoooo!
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/05/an-interview-with-vanessa_n_565182.html

When you had so many classy actresses of the era, she always just struck me as dirty and nasty.  And with that career progression, makes me wonder what the problem was.  Computer programmer to waitress?  And that was the era where a programmer could literally write their own ticket, demand was high and supply was limited.  I would suspect drugs myself.

Actually there have been several.

Some movies like "The G Spot" put them in the end credits.  And I saw a documentary several years ago about the industry that included quite a few (including 1 scene that had 5 different actors involved until they got it right).

I can't think of any at the moment, but I know I have seen quite a few over the years, often times in the end credits.

What happens if one of them "finishes" prematurely?

Sorry if these are repeats.
