Subject: Ask Hawk About:....Well, Hawk!

Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 10/31/06 at 1:51 am

This appears to be a new trend, and I have found it refreshing to get to know people in this manner.
I also hotice that some people have trouble with their bios, and I feel that this is a great icebreaker.

Therefore, I have decided to open myself up, and see if anyone is interested.
So, ask away! I will answer whatever questions you may have about me!
Honestly, even!

How did you meet your wife?

Melissa and I met while I was in the only semester of college I have ever attended.
I was living with someone she knew, at the time. She came over to see this person, and we met that way.
She told me that she pulled my roommate aside, and asked, "You don't date that kind of man. That's more my type. Why are you with him?" The roommate (who was also my girlfriend at the time) told her that she wanted to try something different, as the men she typically went after just "weren't doing it for her".

I broke out of that relationship after about 3 months. The female was too abusive, in almost every way.
Melissa and I have been together for almost 8 years, now; we've been married for 5 years, come May 25th.

You've mentioned that you've lived in both Utah and Nevada.  I too, have lived in both of these states.  What cities/areas did you live in, and how did you like it?

Utah- I lived in Sandy, which is considered a suburb of Salt Lake City. My time living there was not as pleasant as I would have had it, but this is not due to the place itself. It was due to the fact that I was not/am not/will never be Mormon. The people chastised my family, and I was mercilessly picked on, on an almost-daily basis. I was there for 3 yrs.

Nevada- From 1983-1986, I lived in Elko. Back then, it was still a small town. (Technically, I was in Spring Creek, which is an hour or so drive through the mountains, to get to.) Except for the fact that I had no friends- really, it was OK. I then moved to Utah, and in 1989, I moved to Sparks. I was there from mid-1989 to the end of 1994. I graduated High School @ Sparks High (Classs Of 1993). I consider Sparks as the closest thing I have ever had to a "hometown", even though I was born in Virginia. Living in Sparks was interesting, and infinitely more pleasing than Elko, for me.

When did you get an apartment and moved out of your parent's house to start living with your wife? ???

At the time I moved in with Melissa (then fiancee), I was not living at home- I had been living on my own- or at least with non-related people- since 1997.
At that time, I was living with my best friend and his wife, out on Pacific Heights Road.
Their place was too far for me to walk into town from, and I had no income of any sort. I was not on Social Security, nor was I employed. I was starving, and I was in too much pain, physically, to do very much about it.

Melissa & I moved in together on 9/11/98. (Ominous, isn't it?)

How does it feel to have a wife? ;)

Subject: Re: Ask Hawk About:....Well, Hawk!

Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 10/31/06 at 6:01 pm

That can be taken a few ways...

If you mean- 'How does it feel to be married?': I have only asked 2 women in my life to marry me. My first fiancee said 'yes', then threw me out of her life a few months later. I discovered she was keeping some big secrets from me- involving infidelity, theft and MPD. I'm glad I didn't marry her.

Melissa, on the other hand, is one of the best wives a man could ever hope for. She has been 100% supportive of my dreams, goals, and aspirations. She is also the only woman I have ever been involved with who is not physically abusive towards me. To me, that says a lot!

If you mean- 'How does it feel to have a wife?': There will always be times where fights, arguments, debates and differences of opinions will occur. Get through them as best as you can, and move on from there. If your relationship is strong enough, you will survive them and be stronger than before.
I personally like being married, and I would change very little, even if I could.
There are also times when you will inevitably acknowledge other women's beauty around you. The trick is to acknowledge it, and then focus that feeling so that it goes back to the woman you married. In some cases, this is called "dick discipline".

I'm afraid I can't answer that question truthfully, Howard.

Not knowing her, I can't properly assess her personality, nor will I give an opinion that's based solely on hearsay.

That being said, I have heard you speak about her, and what you have said has not exactly made me want to go out and invite her to lunch.
-No offense!

I grew up in Cottonwood Heights, which is just a hop skip and a jump from Sandy.  My mom actually grew up in Sandy.  What schools did you attend?  Don't even get me started on being non-Mormon in Mormonville.  It is such a bunch of crap!

As for Nevada, I lived in Carson City - not too far from the Reno/Sparks area.  I too, loved living there.

Now for the ultimate "small world/spooky moment," my husband and I are seriously thinking about moving to Virginia.  No kidding.  :o

I attended 5th-8th Grades in Sandy.

5th grade- Altaville (I think. I remember the mascot of the school was "The Kittyhawk".)
6th Grade- Indian Hills Middle.
7th & 8th Grades- Crescent View Middle. (I was part of the 1st class to go through that school, when it was brand-new.)

To tell the truth, I have only been in 3 bands:

The first, was a band called "Death Wing". This was a band that was primarily influenced by groups such as the Misfits and Danzig. I was drafted, and I went with it, because I had nothing better to do, at the time.
Plus, I don't do death crap.

The second- A band that I put together, but we never actually went anywhere. A pity, because we had some killer potential. We were called "Armada".

The third- The band I am currently in, "Salsa Bella". Ironically, this band is one I had no real hand in forming, but I am the most recent lead vocalist. Also ironically, I think this band will be the one that goes furthest, until I can form the ideal band for me, which has been a vision for years.
My ideal band will be called "The Legion Project".

On the other hand, I have worked with several bands- usually them backing me up.

How did it feel living with your Mother And Father?

How did it feel living with your Mother And Father?

I didn't live with my father. In fact, I haven't even seen him since I was three.
My parents were divorced before I could consciously remember.

Living with my Mom was almost surreal.
She was on the road more often than not (being a high-octane entertainer tends to do that).
As a result, I have lived in roughly 1/5th of the U.S. Rarely for more than 6 months-1 year at a time.
I grew up with a rather liberal view on most things.
As the result of growing up in a prejudiced family, I also believe I came away with more temperate view, when it comes to race, sexual orientation, and so on.

However, there were times when it was hard for me. For example, when Mom went to Indonesia on Command Performance, and she was there for 3 months. Having no friends as a child, and having 2 older siblings who were either more interested in their own lives than taking care of me, or hating me enough to essentially leave me alone and not care, I became really attached to my mother.

However, for the most part, I would change very little, if anything.

Teela's name wasn't intended that way- it just sort of happened.
My wife and I decided that when we discussing children, we wanted unusual names.
However, we also wanted them to be family names.
For the females- the 1st name would be form her side, the middle name from mine.
For any males- The 1st name would be from my side, and the middle from hers.

We are hoping for a son, by next year. His name will be Isaac.

Believe it or not, my first experience was when I was 6.

I played Prince Malcolm, in MacBeth.
I was in the Arizona Royal Shakespeare Players, at that time, under the direction of Anthony Cresswell.
I remember it, because he was so amazed that I knew that kind of stuff at such a young age.

For the most part, my mother was my main trainer. She was the Top Dolly Parton Lookalike Entertainer in the world for almost 15 yrs., and she was among the very first to pioneer a "Tribute" show to someone who wasn't dead. Guess who she tributed?

Otherwise, I have had chorus training while in various stages of school. In High School, I was part of a group called "Skyfire", which was the 2nd best Performance Show Choir in the US (just behind BYU), and 5th in the world, when we competed in an Internation Performance Choir Competition in Vienna.
For the most part, though, I guess you would call me "self-taught".

As for 'Sweeney Todd'- I know of it, but have never seen it. I'd check it out, though. It's a Broadway musical, so I'd try it at least once.

Do you eat healthy?

Define "healthy".

If you mean "Healthy appetite"- yes, most assuredly! Particularly for Greek food.

If you mean "healthy food choices"- sometimes. I have been following a modified Atkins diet, for about 6 months. Of course, with my salt cravings, I do sometimes slip off the wagon, and have a bag or two of pretzels or a candy bar. I am currently around 265 lbs. However, it is not all fat.

I also study Sumo- the martial art. Considering that I have rather poor balance and a large frame, it's the perfect martial art for me.

There are a couple of videos of it-one with Angela Lansbury (in her Tony winning role) and one with Patti LaPone. (George Hearn was in both of them) Both were filmed on stage.

BTW, there is a hair place around here called Sweeney Todd's. Not a place I would want to go to have my hair done.  :-\\

My Member Handle is the title of a B-rated fantasy film, from 1980.

It stars John Terry, the late Bernard Bresslaw, Morgan Sheppard, Ray Charleson, Peter O'Farrell, and Jack Palance.
It also features Patricia Quinn and the late Roy Kinnear.

This was a film I grew up with, and despite how corny it is, I love it!
I want a copy of it in my video library, and I have even sat down, and re-written the film itself, so that it could be re-done, but better. I feel that it would work its way into the hearts of the public, but I have been afraid to try panning it out, for fear of rejection or lawsuits.

I am not generally on during the weekend, as I have band practice on Saturday days, I run karaoke Friday & Saturday nights, and Sunday is "Family Day". On Sundays, I spend that time with my wife & daughter.
Yesterday, I didn't have much chance to get out on here.
Hopefully, that will change in the not-too-distant-future.

Melissa is well...just with a lot on her mind.
That happens, at the beginning of each month, when you're a Multi-Property manager.
Logging rents, communicating with the Owners, etc.
Plus, with our vehicle being down for over a month and not having $3,000+ to fix it is not exactly helping.

Teela is learning how to sing. In fact, she has helped the old man with singing rehearsals! ;)
One of her favorites to sing with me is "Love Will Find A Way", by Pablo Cruise.

She is also VERY artistic. She loves to draw/paint pictures. She likes colored pencils and watercolors, but wants very badly to work with "real" paint. She does not like crayons.
She has shown a natural rhythm for dancing, and is interested in ballet. She also has told me she wants to learn piano. I tend to think that just comes from when I am practicing or composing, and she likes the fact that my keyboard/synthesizer can make many sounds, etc.

Nothing in the way of acting yet, although she has a very vivid imagination, and loves to pretend and role-play. Since my mother has been visiting, we have watched many style shows on TV, and one of Tela's new phrases is  "How do I look?" ;)

How do you keep yourself busy during the day?

I devote 2 hrs. per day to my vocal practice. This is not only to help me keep my edge vocally, but also proves vital for me to learn the Spanish material I sing. This is also time for me to loosen my voice up, work out the nasties, and learn new songs being initiated into the line-up.

I help run the apartment complex's office, from 1-5 pm. My daughter comes home at 3:35, and I try to keep up with her. (Sometimes that can be HARD to do! ;))

Lately, I have been getting out, pounding the pavement with demos in hand, and meeting with potential gig bookers. I also have been attempting to start an exercise regiment.

There are several ways I use my downtime-

Enjoying food, reading, keeping up with my French practice (I studied 4 yrs. in school), playing games, watching films, studying comedy, working on new lines to deal with hecklers (One fellow member has given me a LOT of help there!), practicing my piano, and currently working on a novella for a contest I plan to enter. (It's a murder mystery novella, for the "Black Orchid" nomination). I am also completing applications for "The Amazing Race".

There are myriad ways to enjoy one's downtime, if one only takes the time.

I have not heard enough of their music to have formed an opinion of them.
This comes from not listening regularly for about 15 yrs.!

Do you like 70's music?

Depends on the artist.
There are some artists who were big in the '70s that I particularly enjoy, such as The Who, Peter Frampton, Nazareth, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, and Gary Wright.

There are also some I don't care as much for, usually because they were overplayed.
Examples are Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, the Rolling Stones, and to a lesser extent, Deep Purple.
(Although I like the song "Woman From Tokyo".)

1950s- The Crew Cuts (known for their one-off 'Sh-Boom')
1960s- Bob Dylan (I can't understand half of what he says!!!!)
1970s- Lynyrd Skynyrd (Too many hits that were overplayed.)
1980s- Whitney Houston (Too many reasons to list)
1990s- Korn (Again, too many hits overplayed, and too Gothic for my taste.)
2000s- 3-Way Tie: Britney Spears, John Mayer, and Toby Keith.

I guess you could say that, yes, I am a fan. In fact, I'm applying for TAR 12. (They've already casted for TAR 11.) I have seen almost every episode from TARs 1-8. However, I am not above re-watching the past onres, in order to study strategy.

I haven't seen it this season. However, I can tell you who I have liked in the past.

For example, in TAR 5 there was a team consisitng of a "little person" and her cousin. I liked them because the little person, Charli, was physically challenged in some ways- like me.

Currently, I am studying TAR 6. I like 3 specific teams:

Lori & Bolo- Professional Wrestlers (I was a big fan of wrestling, at one time)
Don & Mary Jean- The oldest couple to make it onto TAR. (Currently, they're in last place.)
Gus & Hera (Father/daughter team. Dad was in the CIA, as well as a former surgeon; daughter was a nurse.)

Who do I like least? Honestly, there are 3 types of teams I don't care for:
1. Teams that try to get away with rule-breaking. (They usually gripe & moan about getting penalized.)
2. Teams who have some sort of negative attitude. (Like having the "Better-Than-Thou" attitude, for example.)
3. Teams that deliberately back-stab.

As for favorite locations, I don't know where they've gone so far on the current one, but I know some of my favorite past locations.

Included are: Stockholm, Sweden; Dakar, Senegal; Paris (I have actually been there, and I speak French fluently); Brazil; Switzerland; Singapore; and St. Petersburg, Russia.

There is only one place I absolutely refuse to travel to: Antarctica. No people, and too remote.

Also, way too cold!

I've only been watching it for, I think, three seasons, but I am totally addicted.  It is just so captivating.  I would be so excited if you were on it!

This season, I'm rooting for the Cho brothers.  They just seem like all-around great guys.  I just wish they'd play a little bit harder and not worry so much about their friends.  I like the blondes because they are good at the game, but they are also kind of shady, which I don't like.

Hawks were my favorite birds as a younger child.
Then it wen to peregrine falcons.

As an adult, I tend to fancy 3 birds:
Rooks, condors, and Amazon lilac-crested parrots.

I got the chance to see it this past Sunday night. The Chos are cool, but I don't like the Black ladies (attitude), or the Beauty Queens (too stuck-up for my taste).

Thank you for the vote of confidence! I hope to see your excitement, if/when I get chosen!

I don't care for that expression either.  But it is a part of American culture now.

When I was 5 (and my cousins were 15 and 13), they used to tease me unmercifully.  They taught me (incorrectly, of course) that giving someone the finger meant "Thank You".  So soon after they taught me that, my mom and I were walking across the street, a car stopped and let us pass in front of it.  My mom says "Thank you" and I give the lady the "finger" (thinking that I was also saying "Thank you.")  Boy did I get in trouble for that one.  ;D

Unfortunate. True, but still unfortunate.

No wonder other cultures calls Americans "barbaric and vulgar".

I have always preferred to use my words and wit to combat others. Unfortunately, I usually go up against less-educated people most of the time, and since I am used to speaking with large words and obscure phrases, most of the time they don't get it.

My brother Stuart is a perfect example of what I mean. We grew up in the same family and were raised with the same education. But he has always resented how I speak because I speak "like a University professor", and I "can't just say it plainly", to use two of his favorite quotes. Because I can disarm and befuddle him so easily with the vocabulary that I naturally am used to, he resorts often to puerile name-calling and obscene gestures.

Does this not seem even slightly pretentious or obnoxious to you?
I realize that as a simple roof-monkey I probably fall under the category of 'less-educated people' so please forgive me if somehow, owing to my oversight, I have managed to miss the subtle sarcasm that perhaps lurks within these words.
Regardless, it does still suggest that you are putting yourself up on a pedestal here, a course of action which is not always beneficial to the further attainment of one's goals.
Furthermore, I believe this great country of ours (regardless of how barbaric and vulgar you may believe it is) was built on hard working, blue collar individuals, who may well have used puerile conjecture and obscene gestures, not as a last resort but as a common bond, keeping themselves apart from the more upper crust, elitist and often snobbish class obsessed supervisors.

I believe Lynyrd Skynyrd said it best with these words -

"Yeah we love our families, we love our kids, you know it is love that makes us all so rich. That's where were at, If they don't like it they can just get the hell out!"

So, in a show of good faith, in an attempt to bridge the obvious barriers between us, as one man to another, I will exchange a simple gesture of friendship.

You misinterpret what I say, Davey.

When I say "less-educated", I mean that there are those who have more of a mastery of the English language than simple profanity, but either through accident or design they use the profanity...sometimes for no other reason than to spite others.

I am not stating, nor will I ever state, that I am better than a "simple roof monkey", to use your term.

Because of how I naturally speak, people seem to think that I surround myself with airs of snobbery and arrogance. What causes those thoughts? The fact that I don't speak like the average person? The simple stating of that fact? Or is it that people jump to conclusions, without thinking that there is more than one way to take what people say? Perhaps a bit of both.

Frankly, I applaud your candor and honest thoughts. And I admit that profanity does have its place. Hell, Shakespeare was one of the most profane authors ever, and he is considered one of the "classic" authors.
Chaucer also had his moments, and he happens to be one of my favorite authors of all-time.

Think upon this, my friend: There is a time for vulgarity, and a time for intellect. Wouldn't you agree?
And just because one eschews the other, doesn't make either of them better than the other...just different.
If you want to be profane, go for it. I just respectfully disagree. (BTW, I was once a wrestling fan, too. That's why most people embraced Stone Cold...he was a blast of profanity in the face of the corporation. Profanity sells today, just as intellect once did, and maybe will again. Nice one!)

I think we should keep the birds, and just not make them mean what they do.

This is a nice thought, but what could they mean? Maybe we could use it in a secret handshake or something.

So you're saying that those who make a conscious decision to use profanity when other more 'eloquent' phrases are available are operating on a lower mental plane?
Sometimes, the best way to communicate a point is to make a very simple statement.
The main reason behind the astronomical success of Mr. Austin was that he was the anti-hero as it were. He was the rebel personified, something that the corporate world has tried for years to quell from the spirit, yet he was able to rise above his station and stomp a mudhole in every sumbitch who got in his way.

I don't think that people who use profanity consciously are operating on a "lower plane" per se.  In the proper context, it's quite fun to swear like a sailor.  I've had roommates in college and fellow graduate students and even professors who can cuss until your ears bleed.  But in so-called "polite company" they will bring it down ten notches and display great eloquence.  My roommate at Duke, who dropped F-bombs with impunity, would challenge me on a regular basis at Scrabble, and I'd say that he won about 2/3 of the time (we were usually within 30 points of each other no matter who won) because he had a superb vocabulary that exceeded my own.

I used to swear up a storm too, but ever since my baby was born I toned it down quite a bit.  I think profanity is more contextual than a sign of how intelligent one is or how well they have developed their vocabulary.

Go to the website where they have "TAR" applications. I can't remember the website off-hand, but I found it through a search engine. You might find it on cbs.com.

Print up the application (you'll need 2- one for each member of the team), and fill it out. You also have to send a 3-minute VHS tape, showing your team, and explaining why you are applying, and why they should choose you.

They also have a list of requirements that you must pass, before they will clear you.

-I hope this answers your question.

Property Management is a bit different from most jobs, depending on who you work for.

If, for example, you work for a private owner (meaning the owner is not affiliated with a Property Company), you could technically be on-call 24/7! It would also probably require you to live on-site, and have the Office open a minimum of 5-6 days per week.

On the other hand, if you work for a company, then you can get anywhere from 40-60 hrs. per week, and decent benefits. You may or may not live on-site, and you have more responsibilities, which also carry certain priveliges.

Melissa is currently being considered for a place in Sacramento. The company has been around for 50+ yrs., and has property in 4 states. (See the "Feel Any Way" thread.)

The fundraiser was a good learning experience.

Overall, I was generally pleased with the sound.
However, each of us made a few bumbles.
I know that I had trouble with the acoustics, and that made for a muted sound check.

Also, the energy levels weren't quite there.
Probably because the audience saw the entertainment as an afterthought.
I am one of those entertainers that feeds off of crowd energy.

So, it wasn't as good as it could have been, but it was a valuable learning tool.

The Dec. 1 gig will be much better, I'm sure.

Interesting pic, man.

Are you afraid of being alone?

I think he's asking because you seem desperate to attach yourself to someone who wants nothing to do with you.

Taking a baseball bat to her parents isn't a good way to get them to like you, Howard.

You can't make someone want to be with you.  Calling them constantly, constantly asking them to get back with you........it doesn't work.

I think you're just setting yourself up to get hurt even worse in the long run.  You're too good for her.  And this.

Howard-

Here is a visual, so that you can see the point that everyone out here is attempting to get through your head:

You are a battering ram. Robin & her parents are a thick fortified wall. You keep butting against the wall, hoping it will break. The wall isn't breaking anywhere. It's like trying to break the Great Wall of China.
Sooner or later, the ram is going to break off, and be useless for anything.

You refuse to listen to any & all reason, insisting that Robin will take you back, and you'll have sex, and everything will be dee-dee-dee and hunky-peachy.

-Is the visual clear enough for you, sir?-

Sometimes people hold onto hopeless situations to avoid being alone.
I know this, because I used to do the same thing.
When I did it, I ended up in abortive, often abusive relationships- physical, mental, emotional, sexual...you name it, it happened.

I would spare you that grief, Howard.
But you can only avoid it if you are willing to open up the dense matter that makes up our cranial cases, and be willing to explore the possibilities.

If you can't/won't do that, then may God go with you, for none of us will.

........I think this is turning from "Ask Hawk", to "Dr. Hawk's Psychotherapy 101"!
Should I start charging for this??

Poor Gis!

Well, here is the nutshell version:

Friday night, we got there, and the place was packed!
It turned out to be more high-brow than I thought.
(Any place that charges an average of $75/meal SHOULD be considered as such!)

We were asked for a 2 hr. show, and ended up doing a 2 1/2 hr. show.
The audience ate us up (no pun intended!), and even the bartenders were trying to catch a piece of the action.
One of the members of the band who cancelled showed up, and could not shut up about how sorry he was to have dropped the ball! The truth was, his band is quite sub-standard, from a professional standpoint; they performed once, and instantly saw that they needed improvement.

With that being said, we showed superior musicianship that night, and the owner now wants to book us at least once per month.

Our keyboardist, Julio, & I earned kisses from audience member...mine on the cheek, and Julio's on his forehead. (Yes, they were female.)

Does this answer your question, hopefully?

Who do you look like more,Mother Or Father?

My father, hands down.

what is your favorite animal, and why?

My favorite animal is the frog.
Not sure why. Perhaps it has to do with their croaking being a soothing sound to me, or maybe because of "The Frog Prince".

Yes, that is my absolutely wonderful 5 yr. old daughter, Teela.
I am very proud of her, and I am extremely proud to be her father.
