While I've never been to Washington State (and I'm sure there are lots of unique places there, I know of one off the top of my head (and I hope Diofan won't mind me jumping in with an answer - I'm sure he can offer other unique things about Washington State too)

But there is the Fremont Troll (located in Seattle)

What are some major industries of Washington state?

Software, Aerospace, Agriculture. (Microsoft, Boeing, and Apples)

What is the climate like?

You could divide Washington into two climates. The western "Wetter" one, and the Eastern "Arid" one. Washington has 2 mountain ranges between the Ocean and Spokane. One is west of Seattle (Olympics) and the other east of Seattle (Cascades). Seattle is actually in what is known as the "Puget Sound region".

In Seattle the averages by Season are:
Season:  Avg. Temp:  Rainfall:
Winter  34-44      5.70
Spring  41-57      2.51
Summer  54-75      0.78
Fall    45-59      6.00

In Spokane the averages by Season are:
Season:  Avg. Temp:  Rainfall:
Winter  24-34      2.24
Spring  37-59      1.25
Summer  56-86      0.50
Fall    38-60      1.13

What is the state like population wise?  Are there alot of big urban areas?  Alot of smaller rural areas?  Alot of wooded national parks which happen to have extinct volcanos in them?  ;D

Oh man! State Population (As of 2000) 5,894,121, Largest Cities:
Seattle (pop. 578,700) Spokane (pop. 201,600) Tacoma (pop. 199,600)
The Puget Sound Region's Population, which includes Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett, exceeds three million people!

The cities quoted above are the three biggest cities in Washington. There are many smaller rural areas between Seattle and Spokane. The entire Eastern half of the state is dominated by farmland.
You have the Olympic National Park and Mt. Rainier National Park...Largely Mountainous and Wooded. Then Mt. St. Helens Volcanic Monument which the forests there are making a comeback.

As for Extrinct Volcanoes...None in Washington...most are simply dormant, but NONE Extinct.

Any really unique places around there?

Space Needle, Key Arena, Freemont Troll, Pike Place Market, Experience Music Project, jimi Hendrix's Grave, etc. All in the Seattle Area. Mount Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Pacific Ocean, lighthouses, too many things to list off the top of my head.

Pullman is a fairly small town (pop. 27,030)  located in southeastern Washington. The Nearest "Major" Airport would be Spokane International Airport, about 75 miles away. The following Airlines serves Spokane Airport:
Alaska Airlines
America West Airlines
Delta Airlines
ExpressJet
Frontier Airlines
Horizon Air
Northwest Airlines
Skywest Airlines
Southwest Airlines
United/United Express

They told me there is an airport 2 miles away, so I'm guessing it is a small regional one, based on the info you provided (which I appreciate, thank you).  Any idea how to get to the one the Admissions ppl told us about (I asked you about airports anyway because, working at a univ, I know how Admissions people work--I like to get outside, objective information and opinions).

They must have been talking about the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport. About the only airline that serves both airports is Horizon Airlines.

Yes I've been up in the O-deck of the Space Needle (above the outer "rings"). at $15.00 per person for the Elevator ride, I've not gone up in a number of years. But yes, the view is fantastic.
Here's a pic my wife took of me at the base of the space needle last weekend:

Do you know what average rent and average home ownership costs in Seattle?

What type of music is popular there?  Is Grunge still popular?

Seattle rent has been creeping higher and higher. In the past year, rental rates in Seattle jumped nine percent. And an average one-bedroom apartment, which used to rent for $925 per month, now rents for $1,004.

The average price of a house in Seattle is about $375,000. Many people live outside the city for those reasons!

Grunge is no more popular here then anywhere else anymore. Rock bands like Saliva, System of a Down, & Stone Sour are pretty popular. as is Country Music.

Unusually cool! Normally we see 70s/80s temps and some sun, lately it's been patchy sun and maybe the low 60s!
