Subject: Ask Hawk About: Karaoke

Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 07/08/07 at 5:05 am

At the risk of sounding odd, funny or just plain weird, I think I would like some karaoke questions, if you have them.

Do you have any recordings we can hear?

Also, do you ever mess around with the lyrics, something like this?

What's different about karaoke?

The difference between karaoke and "actual" music is:

-The music is re-created to sound similar to the song you're singing.
-You have the words to the song appear on a monitor/TV screen.
-Instead of dealing with "filler" songs, you get to sing what you like, as long as you or the KJ has it.

As far as my sessions go, the Top Request is currently tied between "Picture", by Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow, "Country Boy Can Survive" by Hank Williams Jr., and "Baby Got Back", by Sir Mix-A-Lot.
(All of which, coincidentally, make me cringe.)

Recordings- not at this time, but I'd like to get something like that on.
And yes, I have fiddled with the lyrics. In fact, there are over 150 parodies to popular songs out there.
One song that got me kicked out of a few places is my rendition of "Travelling Man", by Ricky Nelson.

Tough call. For me, it's generally anything requiring a gravelly voice.
I can pull a decent Joe Cocker after a cigar, but Metallica's a no-can-do.

Have you ever had someone tell you the lyrics were wrong?

Only on one or two words. The main thing I get is "This is different from the REAL song."
The reason for that is usually dealing with copyright/publishing restrictions.
This also explains why certain songs aren't available.

What was the last song you sang on Karaoke?

I think at this time, it was "Love Will Find A Way", by Pablo Cruise.

Naturally, some people look at the screen.
Usually because they aren't as familiar with the lyrics as they thought.
