I had forgotten all about "Loving You" Barbie!  Man, I wanted her so bad, if only for that dress.  When I was 7, that dress was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.  And I loved "Barbie and the Rockers" too.  I thought it was just so cool that it came with a free cassette. 

When I was 7 or 8 I got the Barbie Beauty Parlor for Christmas one year, and it was so great.  It came with this wierd thing that you could use to twist their hair.  Do you know what I'm talking about?

I did get a fun Barbie accessory, well maybe two that I can remember.  I got a Barbie Corvette (Actually, I think it was a generic version, but hey who cares?  I could stuff my Barbie in it and pretend like I was going to the beach to meet my boyfriend G. I. Joe (never did have a Ken, but Grandma had a G.I. Joe doll, so you make due with what you have.)  I like soldiers better now anyways, I wonder if playing with G.I. Joe sowed those seeds way back when.  ;D

I also got a Barbie bathtub.  It had this little pump thing that reminds me of those little Nike Pump shoes where you squeeze it and when you put Mr. Bubble bubble bath in the tub and press the pump...it made bubbles. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!  (I was easy to please back then.) lol

The Barbie bathtub also came with a teeny tiny bottle of Jergens lotion, so now if I happen to smell that scent, I will flash back on my happy afternoons playing with Barbie.  I'm such a sap.

Didn't they ever get married?  She sure was in alot of wedding gowns over the years!  Poor Babs left at the alter so many times.  I'd have dumped Ken long ago after the first time I planned the wedding and it didn't happen.  :P

In the 90s they came out with Teen Talk Barbie and the women's groups were upset that she said "I hate math" because it supported the stereotype that women are incapable of handling something as complex as mathematics. 

For me, I was a barbie collector, I am appalled that the first Black Barbie wasn't made until 1981. I know there were other fashion dolls of color available (like the Julia doll in the 60s) but for Barbie supposedly being "progressive" this seemed long over due. 

There were black Barbie's made in the late, late 60's and 70's, only they didn't call them "Black Barbies". They just called them "Barbie". They were just simply black versions of the white dolls.

Point of interest... in addition to Cher Bob Mackie also designed dresses for Diana Ross and the Carol Burnett show. In fact he's the genius behind the curtain dress in the classic Gone with the Wind skit.

everyone is always saying Barbie looks like a slut. but she's just wearing whatever real teenagers/young adults are wearing. so if she looks like a slut, it's because of what people are really wearing. i think she's only as slutty as most girls are today. ookkkkkaaaayyy......i don't know what i'm saying. but i don't think she dresses that sluttily....i still don't know what i'm saying.

in the 60's-80's,  I think she never looked slutty, excpet for maybe the times when she was painted with pounds of make up in the late 80's. but there are some admittedly slutt-ish looking ones from the mid 90's onward.

i think the My Scene dolls, which were influenced by the very slutty Bratz dolls, do have too much make-up on........

Do you know where I can find a Barbie called "Jewel Eye Barbie"? She came out between 1990--1994 and came in a silver/white hologram dress that had a large pink skirt and big pink puff sleeves. The big shirt could come off and make the the dress appear like a short cocktail one rather than a ballroom dress. She had big fluffy blonde hair and rhinestones in the head instead of just painted on eyes.

I have a photo of me holding her as a child and I will post it as soon as I can locate it. That was my favorite Barbie I owned in my life and I don't know why, but somehow over the years I lost her.

Yeah I had those too but I sold most them. (from the 60s on I never had the first barbie. Made good money tho in the 90s just before ebay made it nearly impossible to make money on them now. Price too low you get screwed, price too high no one bids... put a reserve and you intimidate a lot of the bidders  >:(

I was in a toy store yesterday (for the first time in a very long time), saw the Barbies and thought of this thread.  Have the changed the eyes to look more like those Brat dolls?  I don't remember their eyes looking so skwinchy.  But then, I haven't actually looked at a Barbie in probably 30 years or more...

They've changed barbies facial features over the years.  The new eyes came about in the late 90s probably with the advent of the Bratz dolls. I really dislike this updated barbie.

Probably. They also made their heads a little bigger.

Plus the My Scene dolls are obviously made to compete with the Bratz dolls. Barbie is in serious competition with those dolls.

I can't beleive you found the Sparkle Eye Barbie. I haven't seen that doll since I was six years old. You don't know what it meant to me to see that doll again. I had dozens of Barbies as a kid, but that one was always my favorite. I really appreciate it.

And as another note, I hate the Barbies that are out now. It'll break my heart to have to buy one of those dolls for my daughter if I ever be blessed to have one. They just don't look cute or appealing to me at all. A few years ago, I won a Barbie as part of a pageant title, and before I left the bulding to go home, I gave the doll away to another girl.

i like the ones for the Barbie & The Rockers collection and Great Shape Barbie. i haven't really seen that many, though.

This is me with the doll around 1991-1992. She is a White Barbie with crimped blonde hair and blue eyes. And she wearing a denim jacket over a white tank top with little pink convertibles on it, a pink lace skirt and knee high pink faux leather boots.

As far as I know that's the outfit the Barbie came in.

If you can give me a name for her, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I still have my collection...

I inherited, from a collector friend, some photo albums her husband made... he was a photographer and would stage her barbies like models and shoot pics of all the different costumes.

That's very cool! I make dioramas and take photos to tell stories with my dolls. It's such a fun hobby!
