I have a thread in the forum about asking questions about Michael Jackson and since I am a big Prince enthusisast, I wanted to start a question thread about him. And I added Apollonia because I admire her and she's my favorite Prince protege. (She was also in Purple Rain)

My favorite Prince album is the Lovesymbol album that he put out in 1992. There's not really an entire album I dislike. I like most all his music. I have about 10 of his albums.

Prince is 5'2'' tall (w/o the shoes and 5'6'' with the shoes on) and he lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He had a home in Spain, but sold it after his first divorce.

Apollonia's real name is Patricia "Patty" Kotero. Prince named her Apollonia.

As far as I know she's acting in independent films and working the red carpet participating in charity events. I also hear that she's working on another solo album.

Prince's real name is: Prince Rogers Nelson. That is his real name and he's named after the band his father, John, used to play in--The Prince Nelson Trio.

Prince's son died of Pfeiffer's Syndrome which is a skull disorder. He wasn't able to breathe without a ventilator (IMDB.com) He was taken off life support after a week. That really makes me sad for Prince because he actually has a song that uses the sonogram machine beeps as a beat. I don't beleive that he's in a support group since his son passed away 11 years ago.

And I see I missed your question about the 6 in Apollonia 6.
That's actually a funny story. There's three women in Apollonia 6--Apollonia, Brenda and Susan, and they say the 6 stood for how many breasts were in the group. (3 women, 2 boobs each--6) But what do expect from Prince? He initially wanted the group to be called "The Hookers" and the group's original singer Vanity was supposed to be called V****a.

Prince was a dirty little man in his younger days. LOL.

Prince changed his name to the Symbol because in 1993, he had a fallout with Warner Bros.--his record company at the time--and he felt that he was being opressed because they owned everything about him, even his name. So as a move of liberation, he changed it to 0-)+> (I saw Prince make the symbol on acomputer once lol.) He didn't answer to the name Prince from 1993-2000. I think it was weird because he got married in 1996 and I wonder how the preacher adrressed him. LOL He was called "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" TAFKAP, and "The Artist".

For the record, I continued calling him PRINCE the whole time.  ::)

I think the reason Prince wrote about those sorts of things is because he's a very sexual person and very secure in his sexuality and who he is. He's not shy about saying things like that. It's another day at the office for him.

Hi guys, I see that a couple of Mr. Prince's songs have sparked a little debate. LOL.

@ Brigitte: I like Sexy MF. It's an okay song, not my fave off the Lovesymbol album, but it's a good jam for if you're stuck in the car and got nowhere to go. My friends and I jam to it all the time at Sonic's drive-in. A friend of mine has a censored version of the song, and half the song is silent! LOL!

@Howard: Yeah, I've heard "Jack U Off" I have it on cd somewhere. When I first heard it, it was faster than I expected. It's okay, but my fave sort of raunchy song is "Gett Off" it's a better jam, and doesn't sound as dated to me, as "Jack U Off" sounds. JUO really has that 80s sound to it. The FCC has been bent out of shape since Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction".

@Howard: I think that the riff in "Let's Go Crazy" might be the loudest if not one of the longest. It hurts like (bleep) if you have headphones on and are listening to it. (Especially the Extended Version that was used in the opening sequence of Purple Rain)
Also. I think his loudest scream is in "Something in the Water Does Not Compute" and the dance mix of "Little Red Corvette". Watch your ears, I learned the hard way. LOL!

Yes, Wendy did laugh at Prince in a few videos. If you notice, she also laughs at him in the "Raspberry Beret" video. And live performances, forget about it. She was in stitches the whole time. I have several live performances, and it's funny how she's laughing at him!  ;D

Apollonia auditioned for the film. Prince was not present when she auditioned. I think one of the producers of the movie auditioned her in Los Angeles and he called Prince up in Minneapolis and let him know about her. (Originally, Prince's girlfriend at the time Vanity was supposed to play Apollonia's part. The original script is written as "vanity this...vanity that..." but she left the project after she and Prince broke up.) Apollonia and Vanity actually kind of look alike. (Even though Apollonia is Mexican and Vanity is bi-racial--black and white) Big curls hair and little beauty marks like Prince. If you notice, everyone woman Prince has ever dated/married, looks like him.

Prince has written songs for a lot of people. He's written for Apollonia and Vanity (post break up), Morris Day and the Time, Lenny Kravitz, Chaka Khan, and I hear sometime next year he's going to be working with Amy Winehouse. (Why, I don't know!)

No, there was never an offically released Prince doll.
Some fans have made little figurines to look like him, and I've actually seen Leggos made to look like him. I think it would be a nightmare to make Prince dolls. All the outfits and looks he's done.
When he first came out with long red/brown hair, the Controversy look with a trenchcoat and black bikini underwear, then the 1999/Purple Rain look, his looked changed with each album. LOL. And then there would be a doll with buttless pants on. Then you get off into the "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" dolls with the symbol all over. LOL And the little guitars.
(I can elaborate so much, because on one of the Prince boards, there is actually a "Prince Doll?" thread) And from somewhere, there came the talk of Prince protege dolls. (Morris Day would have a string and say "Yesss" and have that annoying laugh. And the Apollonia doll would topple over from being top-heavy ::)) It got outta control. LOL.

I'd buy a few Prince dolls fi anyone ever decided to take on the task of making them. I need something to keep my Michael and Liz Taylor dolls company. I just wonder if the Prince doll would be 12 inches tall like a Barbie Doll, or shorter because he's shorter.  ;D

I know a few titles of her films: Back to Back, Black Magic Woman, Ministry of Vengence, The Divorce Ceremony. (She's actually in the middle of filming one called Everybody's a player and I think Jada Pinkett Smith is in it too.) The only film I've seen is Black Magic Woman and it was pretty good. Kind of like a low budget version of "Fatal Attraction" but with a voodoo twist to it. She's done several TV shows like Sliders, Falcon Crest and Knight Rider. (I saw her on all those shows. I beleive she met her first husband on Falcon Crest.)And she does kinda look like Paula Abdul in that pic. (I love that dress! )

You mean Morris Day. (of the Tme.) The loudmouth man in the loud yellow suit. Jerome was Morris' "right hand man". Morris and Jerome still perform with the Time at small engagements. A friend of mine saw him play a cruise once.

I think Prince dressed up for his song "Batdance" because he did the entire soundtrack for the 1989 Batman movie. (Rumours are that Michael Jackson got offered the project first and declined.) Kinda freaked me out a little when I saw the video. I've seen Prince dress pretty strange at times, but this is hands down one of his wildest get ups.

The other girls are (the white lady) Brenda and (the black lady) Susan. I think that they have given up the music biz and are now in the normal roles of being wives and moms. Back in the 80s, Susan caused shock waves because Prince reportedly told everyone that she was 16 when she was in Apollonia 6. (I think he was lying because I don't know anyone who'd let thier 16 year old sing in painties and garters!)

I actually prefer Sinead's version because Prince's is done live (with crowd screaming) and as a duet with Rosie Gaines of the NPG. I like that Sinead's is a solo and everything. Very pretty.

I think Prince thinks it's cool. But it's a nightmare when you're trying to learn lyrics. He also uses a drawing of a heart for the word "love". And he hand writes his lyrics like that.I've seen his handwritten lyrics.  :o I've gotten used to it now, but it was a pain back in the day. His early albums have real words, but his later stuff, like 1982 and on are in "Prince writing"

I doubt that Mr. Prince will have a Christmas tree. He a Jehovah's Witness and they don't celebrate Christmas. He might have had one before he converted. (He's only been a JW for about 7 or 8 years) I believe he was Lutheran before that. (I know he got married in a Lutheran church for his first marriage.)

Vanity today. Vanity is no longer known as "Vanity" but by her real name, Denise Matthews. Or better--Reverend Denise Matthews. Yep, that's right, she is a preacher now. (I promise you on all things holy she is!) After she and Prince broke up, Denise got heavily addicted to drugs and it almost killed her. Around age 30 she suffered both a heart attack and a stroke, went both partially blind and deaf and lost her kidney. Her faith helped her through her ordeal and now  at 48 years old she is an evangelical preacher. Before her down fall, she had dated rockers such as Rick James and Nikki Stixx.

This is Mayte now. She is in her early 30s and is a model and actress (She recently played a firefighter in the movie Firehouse Dog.) She is also a choreographer and even put together the steps for Brtiney Spear's Slave 4 U video. (Before Brit went off the deep end.)

I saw part of The Last Dragon. But at the time, I didn't know who Vanity was. LOL. I like her too and have a tape of her on Soul Train. But you could kind of tell she was out of it. She giggled WAY too much while Don Cornelius was intervieiwing her. LOL. I'm glad that she has gotten her life together and gotten better.  ;D Another one of Prince's protege's is a preacher too.

I think that Prince's relationship with the media is a love-hate one. I've seen pictures where he's very happy and will pose like he's Tyra Banks at a fashion shoot for the cameras and then he'll cover his head with a cape and run. I saw a pic as early as 1985 where Prince was covered by a cape--sequined and rhinestoned no less--but you could tell it was him. He was a foot and a half shorter than his bodyguard and you could see his little red heels sticking out. It was hilarious.

Yes. Prince has hundreds of demos and songs in his "Vault" at Paisley Park. From what I hear he has enough material to put out albums for decades. And he's constantly writing and recording. For the Purple Rain album he had made over 100 songs and most of those still haven't been released.

And his hit song Kiss was actually meant to be a demo for another singer. He actually doesn't like the song--from what I've heard-- and if you listen to him sing it live in any given concert since 1986, he hasn't sang the entire song. He'll cut it short or have the audience sing it back to him. (I have about 3 different live versions of this song and he never did the entire thing!) It doesn't matter, I fill in the words! LOL!

Yes, Prince has done many outtakes. His 1986 Parade album includes alot of songs that was supposed to be on an album called The Dream Factory set to be released in 1985, but it never happened. (Instead, he released Around the World in a Day) He actually has an album of outtakes and B-sides called The Hits/The B-sides. (It's a three disc anthology, the first two discs are hits and the the third is the B-sides. I don't have disc three, but I'm working on it. A few outtakes are on the Hits discs too. My favorite is Pope.

Yes, Prince does drive. I've seen him do it before. I usually see him in big cars like BMWs and Caddilacs. (I've seen a yellow BMW in a couple of his videos from the 90s and I've seen pics of him at his home with a bunch of sport cars.) He has some kind of Ferrarri I think that was indeed purple.

I don't want a purple car. I want a Little Red Corvette!  ;D So I can play the song all the time!

Yes, I have seen some of his early videos. I like the I Wanna Be Your Lover video and the Automatic one. Let's Pretend We're Married is a cool one too, but they cut out the end where he started cursing like a drunken sailor! LOL!. Most of his early vids were like outtakes from concert. The Dirty Mind and Uptown vids that I've seen are from the same concert, because, he's wearing the same outfit! (The outfit is so racy, I cannot post a pic of it here!)

He's done a few. Nothing Compares 2 U is a duet with Rosie Gaines who used to be a member of the NPG. And several of his songs are duets with his first wife, Mayte. (Endorphinemachine is my favorite.) Beautiful Loved and Blessed is a duet he did with Tamar Davis, who toured briefly with him a while back. (I don't dig that song so much.)  Prince is very into himself and you don't see very many duets. He did a live duet with Beyonce in 2004 on the Grammys and it was a disaster because she's bigger than him and totally over powered the little man! LOL! He looked good though.

I LOVE Gett Off. I have the song, the official video and the MTV VMA performance with the buttless pants. It's a wild good song. The only thing I complain about is that in the music video he had "Diamond" and "Pearl" who were representing his D&P album and they weren't in the MTV peroformace. They toured with him though.

I don't have any Michael Jackson vinyls. The only vinyl I have is the Controversy album by Prince. I have some Jackson 5/Jacksons cds and compilations and anthologies. And my record collection doubled when I bought Michael's Visionary collection which has 20 of his singles. I don't count it as one unit because if you look hard enough it is possible to track down each of the singles from Don't Stop Til You Get Enough to Blood on the Dance Floor.

It's funny I have only 2 actual Prince singles: The Greatest Romance Ever Sold (from the Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic album) and Te Amo Corazon (from the 3121 album) working on getting more.  ;D

Prince only promotes himself.  ;D Back in 1990 he was supposed to do a jingle for Pepsi but for some reason, the project got scrapped. I think it's awful because I could totally see it: Prince in a tight Versace outfit, playing his White cloud or Blue Angel guitar with the long hair...it'd have been awesome.  >:(

--I don't think Apollonia ever played a Native American character (but I have yet to see all her films.) Since she's of Mexican heritage, most of the characters I've seen her play are Hispanic. She might have played a Native American in Back to Back, I'm not sure, I didn't fully understand that movie.

--I'm sorry, I don't know who Darren Hayes is. But I'll toss a title out there--it's probably wrong--Dolphin?

I'm sure that Prince dyes his hair. He's been dyeing it since about 1981-1982. His natural color is more of a reddish-brown.  (I have a concert he did in March of 1981 on DVD and it looked like it was red-brown.) It's been consistently black since around the time of the release of the 1999 album. He did add some honey and copper highlights to his hair in the late 90s.

There are more of the Nelsons (Prince's last name) than there are Jacksons! Prince has somewhere between 7 and 10 siblings and half-siblings. Maybe more. I saw a group pic of them from around the late 70s and there were about 15 people in the picture.

Has Prince ever been on a reality show before?

I don't think Prince has been. (He played American Idol in 2006--but it wasn't like he competed or anything.) I don't think he'd do anything liek that because he is a really private man and I don't think he'd want to showcase himself like that. (And I don't EVER want to see him without make up again.) ;)

I'm not really certain how much of it is true, but I think it's safe to say about 50-60th percent is based on real life. However, Prince's parents are BOTH black (not one black and one white) His father NEVER beat up on his mother. Mr. Nelson (P's father) never attempted suicide.

One scene that is true to life--and the director cried on camera over it--is when Prince's character "The Kid" and the "Father" have a conversation about getitng married. The "Father" tells "The Kid" "never get married" and Prince's father really did say that him. I was shocked out the door and around the block at that. It was pretty sad.

Michael Jackson and Prince have only shared a stage ONCE back in 1984. Michael and Prince both attended a James Brown concert. (They came seperately)
James invited Michael onstage and they sang a little ditty togetherand then Michael pointed out that Prince was there. That was the wildest Prince performance I ever saw. Prince rode in on his bodyguard's back, threw a glove to the fans--it got thrown back in his face--he barely hugged James, took a guitar, broke a string on the guitar, , took his top off, danced around for a bit and as he was leaving, knocked a huge light fixture off the stage.  :( You actually heard the crowd say "OOOOH" as it fell. Michael got off stage right before Prince got on, I was like "Thank God!"  ;D

@Howard: I know, when I first got into Prince, I didn't think it was his real name either. I found his real name in the World Almanac, beleive it or not!  ;)

@Bookmistress: Sometimes the bandmates are new and sometimes not. For instance, in the Revolution, Prince's make keyboardist--"Dr." Matt Fink--played from 1978-1991 (along with the formation of the NPG in 1990) He toured with Prince in 1990 as part of the NPG but left after that. I don't know why, he can play the keyboard like nobody's business! LOL! I think the names come from him wanting to kind of change the shape of music and the music scene--Revolution--fighting to change the sound of music and New Power Generation--a fresh dose of talent.  And his band is still currently The New Power generation, but the line up is very different than what it was in 1990. (And I'm still learning everone's name) His band is almost all female now. His keyboardists, guitarists, bassists, are all mostly female now.

Prince used to play First Avenue (club featured in Purple Rain) all the time in the late 70s and early 80s when he was starting out. In the late 80s he also started playing the Glam Slam (club featured in Grafittii Bridge) but stopped sometime in the mid-90s. He used to play in his 3121 Club in Las Vegas--I couldn't go at the time because I was underage! http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/04/flame2.gif-- but then he toured London. I'm not sure if the club is still operating. He's got so many things going on, it's ridiculous. LOL. I think I'd rather see him in a stadium with 30,000 other enthusiasts.  ;D

I think Prince's look is more refined now than what it was in the 80s. (though I so totally miss it!) He wears ALOT of suits and stuff, but he kind of keeps it funky. I think I like Prince better with all his clothes on instead of half-naked or naked (like on the cover of the Lovesexy LP.) It's better to keep us wondering. Plus he is 49. Not really cool to dance around with his tummy out.  ::) I dig the sutis. (And he always wears the little boots!)

The movie Purple Rain is loosely based on Prince's life and career with little embellishments. (Like smacking Apollonia around, etc.) I mean everyone around Prince at the time was there. The Revolution, The Time, The Modernaires...Filmed in his club he'd gotten started in as a teen with a ten foor tall afro.  ;D According to a little documentary I currently have, Prince had been writing and making notes for YEARS before this script and movie came to fruition. The ONLY real actor in the film was Apollonia. Everyone else was else a friend of Prince or an actual clubber in "First Avenue" and "The Taste" clubs.

(Cute fact, all of the music performance scenes, The Revolution, Apollonia 6, The Time, The Modernaires were filmed in ONE WEEK.)

There was actually supposed to be a concert film released in 1982, before Purple Rain, but it fell apart around the same time Prince and Vanity fell out.

And I crack my buddies up because I can copy just about everyone's voice and mannerisms in the film right down to Morris Day's slithering "Yes"!

Okay, I reviewed the doc, and according to one of the producers of the film, Bert Mangoli, Prince had composed over 100 songs for the movie, 12 got picked and essentially, of those 12, Purple Rain did not exist. And Prince actually pulled together, and bumped that song out. It was really last minute and he I think when there's a crush, he can really tap into his deeper miind and just pull that lovely soul wrenching, heart-tearing kind of music out. And it was really kind of the culmination of his true life struggles with his father and just how his life was. Prince came up with the initial melody and kind of let everyone else build around it. (According to Wendy Melvoin and Matt "Dr." Fink of The Revolution.) I have 4 different live versions of the song and well up with tears on each one. I'd hate to see how I  act at a concert and he plays it.

And another thing, the Purple Rain on the album and in the movie are both performed live.

For the musical score to the movie Purple Rain, Prince won an Academy Award in 1985.  :)

Oh gosh. If I had to choose, I think I'd go with "When Doves Cry" because the video was genuinely hot. It showed off Prince as a singer and dancer and his pretty tiny body when he got out the bathtub and crawled on the floor in the beginning of it. I love his outfit in the video too, the gold paisley outfit with the big burgundy hat with the lace inset...it was sexy. I have that vid on DVD (and a live performance from 1990) and it's awesome. I love it.

The other songs/vids are good too.

But Raspberry Beret...um, wow. I like the song, but the video.  :o Not one of my top ten faves.

I haven't seen the Raspberry Beret video... I just know the song... I like Nothing Compares 2 U but I prefer Sinead's version so I didn't include it....
