Subject: Any Qz about Q? Ask away!

Written By: snozberries on 12/08/07 at 12:56 am

Hey all...

I signed up in 05 but didn't become active until recently. I was hiding in the arcade trying to steal Jason's high scores.
I live in Santa Barbara and as you can tell by my 911 thread I work as a police dispatch.
I just turned 40.
Watch way too much TV
Drink way too much Mountain Dew.
Love my dog even tho her pic is no longer my avatar.
And sometimes I am way too wordy... but that's cuz I have no one else to talk to.
Ah well ask away!

my friends took me out to lunch Sushi, I wrote my christmas cards, and then I put up my TV. I logged on while waiting for my dinner to cook but that was done 20 minutes ago and I'm still on line!

Sounds great! Now I'm back online for the moment, checking my PM's and writing down addresses so I can mail out my Christmas cards this weekend! 8)

There are four...

Whoopi Goldberg but I would be totally intimidated by her
Oprah...cuz I want her to go Hi I'm Oprah, nice to meet you (I love how she introduces herself -as if people don't know her!)
Ellen cuz I want to dance with her
Rosie O'Donnell because say what you will about Rosie but I find her extremely entertaining. She embraces pop culture like I do so we could stay away from the politics and just talk about TV shows!

No I am an only child... my father is an only child... my mother has 5 sisters.  The sisters were in two groups... the first three each had 6 kids... of the last three one is gay, my mom had me, and the youngest only had one also.  Weird huh.

I have lived in California longer than I have lived anywhere else but I was born in Holland.
We moved to Maryland when I was 2 or 3 actually, my father was in the air force so he took us home for a couple months while he awaited his next orders.
My mom and lived in Riverside while my dad was in Viet Nam
When he returned we moved to Las Vegas, then Panama, Washington DC, back to Vegas, Salinas Ca, Stockton CA until I moved to Santa Barbara in 1996.

I am not very crafty but appreciate people who have this talent.  At one point the University (UCSB) had a picasso exhibit at their museum.  There was a pic. of one of the paintings on the web site. I was pretty bored working the graveyard shift so I recreated the image using markers, pens and whiteout... I was pretty proud of it but how sad is it that someone with absolutely no artistic talent can copy a Picasso and get it almost perfect?  ;D

I collect everything!  I have always been kind of a snob slob. When we lived in Panama my mom threatened to throw out my toys if I didn't clean up my room. I didn't so she threw away everything. As a result I have tried to get back everything I ever owned. I am a bit of a packrat.  Some of that is due to the trauma of losing my stuff as a kid but a lot of it is about the moving around so much. I never had a home so my stuff was my home. It's still that way.

I collect Action figures.. I love super heroes! Especially superman!
Barbies.
Any TV show memorabilia like dolls for TV shows, I have all the Charlie's Angels dolls but haven't picked up the van yet
Jem Dolls
Movie Posters
and my all time favorite thing to collect are 8x10s from my favorite shows/stars.  I have a Buffy the Vampire Layer Slayer wall, a Cagney & Lacey wall, photos from 3rd Watch, Any Day Now... I have a drawer full of photos I don't have room to display... that's why I want a big house... just so I can display my crap.

Your favorite music?

I love 80s music, Motown & Rap.  but I spend so much time watching TV I don't listen to music as much as I would like.... I love Janet Jackson, TLC and Eminem.  I wish I could have seen TLC in concert before Left Eye died.

Santa Barbara seems like such a beautiful place (from the pictures I've seen - I've never been West of Indiana.) although I understand it is a celebrity hang-out or at least very expensive/upscale.  I think that is where J-Lo was supposed to marry Ben Affleck when that all was happening, I imagine the town was pretty crazy then.

What is your favorite food?
Do you like wine?
Is Carly your only pet?

when I was twelve I went to lake havasu...I remember being amazed that the london bridge was there!

I remember my first trip to LA too... it was the first time I ever felt "home" in  city. I still get that feeling whenever I go there I feel like I should just pack up and move!

There are a lot of Celebs here....Oprah has a house here, Dennis Franz, Cheryl Ladd....so many people. Kelly LeBrock and Noah Wylie live in Santa Ynez about 3o minutes north) That's also where the Neverland Ranch (Michael Jackson's playground) is located. Sadly I never run into Celebs here....Director Taylor Hackford & his wife Helen Mirren also live in SB but of course I didn't meet them here I met them in LA!

I like to eat so I have few favorite foods. I love spaghetti, Red Lobster Fried Shrimp & lobster, chilli, the beans and rice my mother makes, steak.....mmmm I love steak cuz I'm a carnewhore!  ;D Yeah I said it!  About the only thing I don't eat is cheese, mushrooms and Avacadoes...

I don't drink.... I used to but I learned I had problem... it wasn't that I had a problem drinking... my problem was that I couldn't stop drinking  ;).  I joke about it but it has been hard.  Next week will be 11 years for me...but to answer your question I didn't really like wine. If I had to drink wine I'd do the pink stuff or the coolers.  and never EVER Beer!

Excuse me... Carly is my daughter  ;D.  Yeah I adopted her when she was one. She had a hard life before coming to live with me. She lived with a transient who was very mean to her but she is soooo sweet you'd never know it.  She lived with a friend of mine but kept running away. She suffers from separation anxiety and would go looking for people to be with. I had a pretty bad back injury in 1991 and was home for 5 months. About a month into it my friend had to get rid of Carly and they gave her to me because I was home 24/7.  We have been nearly inseparable since. I take everywhere I can. Whenever I go visit my parents in AZ Carly is in the backseat.  She hates it when I go to work or to LA but she knows I will always come back so she doesn't run away anymore.

My parents each have a dog I posted pics of them on the pet photos thread.  I think of them as family too but they are not mine.

Have you ever been on a boat?  Do you get seasick?

What made you want to be a 911 operator?  I think that's a way cool job, I considered it also when my county first opened their first 911 center years ago, but I didn't think I could handle it.  :(

I have been on a boat a few times I don't get sea sick but I don't like being confined I like to know I move and get out and go places if I need to... probably comes from being cooped up in a dispatch center 10 hours a day with no break....tho at time I was on a boat I hadn't become a dispatcher yet  :-\\ hmmm.... why did I become a dispatcher?

you want the short answer or the long one???

Growing up I watched a lot of tv.
I always gravitated to cop shows.
I spent my childhood thinking I wanted to be a cop when I grew up.
After high school I had pretty bad grades so I didn't go to college. I worked at Toys R Us
When I moved to Stockton I thought I would look into this law enforcement thing. I took class at Delta College and got my AA in Criminal Justice but realized that even though I was good at it I didn't want to be a cop.

Then one day I was watching GH.  It was like one of those AHA moments Oprah always talks about.
There was a camera man for the show who caught his reflection in some glass during a shot
It was like a lightbulb went on... I don't like cops I like cop shows... I don't wanna be a cop I wanna work in TV.

Fortunately my 1.8 GPA from high school didn't matter cuz I had a 3.9 in JR college so I got into UCSB.

I was much older than the students here though and putting myself through school. I had to find a job that was flexible with my school schedule. I thought why not put my AA to use.  So I got a job with a department and worked my way up to dispatching.

I like it even though its hard, frustrating and stressful but its not what I want to do forever.
I graduated in 2000- and thought I would work for a year or so to save money and move to LA to pursue my dream.
Unfortunately in 2001 I was injured  at work and was out of work for 5 months.  I started getting caught up on my bills and stuff in 02.
Then in 03 my landlord sold my apt. and I had to move again. All the money I saved went to the move and I thought well I can start saving again but my new apt was 400 more a month.  70% of my paycheck was going to rent and car payments... I still had to pay everything else. Needless to say, I still haven't saved any money although i finally got a raise this year. I hope to get some money together soon so I can move on.

For the obvious question- the back injury was permanent enough so that I can't do camera work or dress sets...both very physical stuff that I really wanted to pursue.  I could write but  I feel like (although my scripts have been well received) I don't have enough ideas to sustain me in the industry.

I want a nice simple job on the set like Script girl or continuity. But those jobs will not pay me enough to live on my own in LA.  I refuse to share a place with anyone.

I tried to transfer to Beverly Hills PD cuz they pay a lot but failed out of the interview process by 2 lousy points. SUX...I think I was too honest in telling them I was hoping to work in the industry on my days off or maybe they didn't believe me when I said I have wanted to make LA home since I was 10 years old... Los Angelinos are so cynical they don't believe anyone but actors and directors would live there by choice.

TMI?

Honestly it was the one about the dog crap on the bike path.... there's something about the way she said "...and a child could come along and eat it!" She really believed that a kid would be dumb enough to see shhh sitting on a sidewalk and mistake it for chocolate or something....it was utterly ridiculous.

The other one was the one about the lady who wanted someone to come give oxygen to her dead cat. It wasn't like she came out and found the cat dead....the cat got caught between the bed frame and floor... It was squashed and stiff ( I guess they had been on vacation or something) anyway...the cat was beyond dead but the woman thought oxygen would help.

...yeah and the burger one...."Ma'am we're not gonna come out and enforce a cheeseburger!"

What are your goals for 2008?

1. keep walking... I've lost 3 whole pounds since thanksgiving... not a lot but since I haven't changed my eating habits yet I feel good about.

2. eventually alter my eating habits but I'm not that committed to it cuz I love food....if I make small changes that will be a success for me

3. work less but save more.  I work a lot of OT because we were understaffed in 07. We will be fully staffed in 08 so I don't have to work any more 14 hour shifts. but I will also shop less so I can actually save money. I got very nice raise in may but saved nothing!

I'm actually surprised- its the first question people ask me....

I was born Tamarra Quintana ________ and went by my first name (Tamarra) through high school. I have always hated my name- and even more I hated that jokes people made about my name.  I'd hear the Annie song Tomorrow everyday or the Mr Rogers song "Tomorrow, tomorrow we'll start the day tomorrow with a song or two"  Only once did a  person make a joke that actually made me laugh

by the time I was in high school I got pretty defensive about it. I would actually hang up on customers if they made a joke or laughed at my name. I talked with my mom and she said why don't you go by your initials then... it made sense cuz I always wrote Tamarra Q. ___________ on everything... I liked having a Q in my name

I started going by TQ then decided at some point when someone said you have to use your name not initials so I started using Tq...and convinced them it was my actual name... I had a friend who refused to call me Tq- he knew I liked the Q so he just called me Q

I sign all my emails Q so any friends who were paying attention just started calling me Q too.

I understand the thing with names and jokes.
I go by my middle name, because if you look at my whole name together, it sounds like a Southern assassin, or something.
I only go by my first name in medical and legal affairs.

why is it most of the famous (infamous?) murderers/serial killers are identified by all three names?

Harvey Lee Oswald
John Wayne Gacy
Mark David Chapman
Okay not Jeffrey Dahmer but he seems to be an exception... Did these go by all their names or is it something the media did?

Well, when it comes to the famous Assassins in American history, they all seem to be called by their full names.
Examples include:

-John Wilkes Booth
-Lee Harvey Oswald
-James Earl Ray
-Charles Robert Guiteau

well I found out later that snozberries were most likely schnoz (nose) + berries = boogers

OK, so here I am, Q.  I just explored the "Ask Me" board/forum for the first time today.  (Does that answer your question?!?)  ;)

So, what to ask...

Why on earth do you actually want to move to L.A.?  You like big city life that much?

Two reasons...

1. We moved around a lot when I was a kid so I never really got a sense of home.  The first time I was in LA i was 10-12  I felt whatever it is that people feel when they talk about home. I finally got it. I don't know if its because so many shows I watched were set there so it felt familiar to me but I don't think so cuz it was a strong deep connection I can't really explain. I feel it every time I go there now. I know that is where I have always been meant to live.

2.  Let's face it where is a tv addict the happiest? In the land where television is made. Its the only city in the world... except new york but not to the same extent, that I can go out almost everyday and get my TV fix without staying home and watching tv.  I can go to show tapings, take studio tours, visit the Museum of TV & Radio, go to the Margaret Herrick Library, Universal Studios/City Walk, tour beverly hills, hollywood, walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame, go to the wax museum... there is just so much to do that fascinates me.  Plus I have friends there and no friends left here so I'd actually interact with people (in the real world) again.

Whew....

^^ Ah, so there is  a logical reason why people like to live in a bustling metropolis!  (Two reasons, in your case.  ;) )

I'm the type that would rather commune with timber wolves, mountain lions, ponderosa pines, and snow-graced mountains.  Too many people and chaotic human energies unsettle me.

I hope you move soon, following your heart's desire.  :)

What are your plans for this year?

I really do want to start writing again.  I have a couple of scripts floating round my head but everytime I sit down at the computer I end up here!  ::)

I also plan on working less... I work a lot of OT because someone has to work and everyone else in dispatch knows that if they say no I will work it whether I want to or not because someone has to... we are finally fully staffed so I can let the newbies take all the OT.

Other than that. . .  I really have no goals. I just want a washer and dryer of my own so If I have to go outside and build the shed myself (my landlord has been "working" on it for 3 years) I am going to get one this year!!!

Do you smoke?

Howard's first it's easier.... I don't smoke.  I used to have a cigarette now and then when I was drinking but only because I thought it was cool.... one fateful night in San Diego I had WAY too much alcohol and one cigarette... I was sitting in the back of pick up throwing up all the way home  *sitting in the bed of a pick up is illegal and I don't do that anymore  ;) *  anyway... just the thought of a cigarette makes me ill.

I was always pretty much anti-smoking anyway because I didn't like breathing in second hand smoke. My mother is a smoker and it annoys me. She seems to think that cracking a window makes the smoke go out but really smoke wafts in all directions.

Hmmm....

:-[ in high school I watched alot of those films like Animal House, Revenge of the Nerds & Heaven Help Us... so I became kind of a wise ass. I also went to Catholic school... in English class Sister Carol was talking about a book and said something like... "They all sang out"  I opened my mouth and spread my arms and let out a resounding "AAAAAHHHHHH" I thought people would join me but they just looked at me like I was nuts...

:-[ I got drunk at party sophomore year of high school and met this guy who, in my inebriated state looked (to me) like Michael Jackson...this was 84 so you know, Thriller was a big deal.  I was too drunk to remember my name and number so my friend gave it to him. He called me on Sunday night and even though the only thing I could remember about him was that he had a Jeri Curl and those aviator glasses MJ wore I told him all about me including where I went to school.  He showed up at my school on Monday- it was an all girls school so getting a visit from a guy was a big deal- everyone heard (my friends have big mouths) that some guy I met at a party was here to see me... When I saw him I realized that they are called beer goggles for a reason... not that I am gorgeous but this guy was the UGLIEST MO' FO on the planet... I mean that was embarassing... they wouldn't let me live it down.

:-[ My friend had a party and I was drinking... how many of my embarrassing moments start off with I was drunk  :-\\ - anyway it was Cinco De Mayo and my friend's birthday so her familia had a huge party to honor both events.  At some point I went to the restroom and returned to the dance floor dancing fool that I am.... I was jumping around, spinning, doing the robot, popping/locking the whole shabang.... anyway I was out there dancing up a storm for about 20 minutes and everyone was watching me... I thought 'Yeah! They like it...." finally my friend's aunt came up and pulled me off the dance floor. She told me to look behind me... yeah when I came out of the bathroom I brought the toilet seat cover I used out with me... it stuck to my ass and was just hanging out of my pants and it twirled everytime I did... all those people watching me were just standing there laughing at me....  :-\\

The secret is to not use your phone a friend and 50/50 until the end....  by 500K if you have both left and don't know the answer use 50/50 then phone a friend... it seems the friend always gives you the wrong answer so just select the answer he doesn't give.... by the way the friend gives the right answer in the early rounds but screws with you in the later ones....

by the way.. that took many hours - days in fact.  But I committed every answer I got wrong to memory so by the time I hit a million I had seen a lot of those questions before.

Plus I know a lot of useless trivia...

I guess it depends on what you mean by retro... I am definately nostalgic so I guess I am into retro. I never really thought about it tho...

I always thought if I won the Lottery I wouldn't build a dream house. I would buy a roller skating rink and renovate it.  The cafeteria would be the dining area and I would convert it to a diner from the 50s complete with juke box.

But the arcade area would have all my favorite games from the 80s to today...including elevator action, paper boy, crazy taxi and a ton of shooting games... my pinball machines would be the ones they made for all my favorite tv shows.  The DJ booth would hold my cd collection plus my dvd collection because I would have a flat screen on the far wall.. . In addition to being able to skate in the rink I would also put up a basketball hoop so I could shoot hoops too.  The area where people put on skates would be my living room and the office would be the bedroom

not that I spend much time thinking about it...  ;D

since I am trying to recapture the best part of my youth does that make me retro?

my cell carrier Verizon has a option for mobile TV at $25 a month.

Internet on the cell phone though is not like the real internet.
There are some sites I cannot visit...and the connection can sometimes be as slow as dial up.

Has your boyfriend/husband ever cheated on you?

that's funny Howard...  I never really mentioned it before but I haven't been on a date in over 10 years.

I never really saw the point.  I knew very early on that I didn't ever want to get married... partially because I am super selfish and I just like to be alone that way everything goes the way I want it and I don't ever have to compromise.  ::)

The other thing is I am soooo independent. I watch Wife Swap and I am appalled to learn that in 2008 there are still woman who wait on their husbands hand and foot....omg I would kill the guy by the end of the first week.

having said that the longest relationship I have ever been in was when I was in high school... it lasted two years.  I was in a junior and he was in the Army.  We saw each other once a week and I was happy because there was no pressure I could care less what he was doing the other 6 days because  was not sleeping with him I just wanted someone to make out with and watch movies with... he was good for that...plus I could say my boyfriend and I did this... my BF said that.... so it was the prestige of having one but none of the pressure....

I used to joke that if I ever got married I would want to live in different locations...two houses close by or two apartments on different floors or in different buildings.

But really I just don't want to be married. I have no need for another person in my life.

Also when I was dating I was attracting some really weird and scary guys so deciding not to date was a good decision.

but that's another story for another time.

Do you have a favorite color?

Well black is beautiful  ;D but um...lets see

Clothing: I wear a lot of greys - like sports grey I also like burgundy

A favorite food?

Home- My mom's spaghetti.

Restaurant- Red lobster Fried shrimp

A favorite scent?

I always say money when I get this on those surveys.
The truth is that I really like those clean scent odor stuff...it smells like clean laundry.

A favorite comfort item (a special blanket or cherished teddy bear or whatever?)

When I was about 7 we lived in Panama. I was really sick for about a week. No one knew what was wrong with me. All of my toys were thrown out because they were afraid they were contaminated. After I got better the first stuffed animal I got was a stuffed rabbit. I have a pic I'll pull out later. Anyway I still have it. I love it.

Do you want to get another pet someday?

I go back and forth on this. I caught myself glaring at a couple in Costco Friday because they were buying two dog beds. I was so jealous but the truth is I don't want another dog...I want Carly back so I don't think I'm ready yet. I found some video footage of her on my computer yesterday  :\'(

Do you have a favorite song or a favorite type of music?

I love 80s music but not the heavy metal hair band stuff. I would love to get Guitar Hero but fear I will hate most of the songs. I need to rent the game so I can see what they exactly offer.

oops... I went off on a tangent.

My favorite artists are TLC  :\'( , Janet Jackson and Eminem.

If you were independently wealthy and did not have to work, where would you live, where would you travel?

My favorite question of the lot! I have a plan for winning the lotto. Big money $200+ million!  ;D

I would buy myself 2 houses. One in Santa Barbara because its beautiful and I want to continue living here and one in LA. Because I do a lot of LA stuff....plus if I had the money I would do even more LA stuff and it would be nice to have a place to flop rather than driving the 3 hours round trip on top of 5 or more hours in line and 2 hours at an event.

Secondly, I would buy my parents a house because AZ is too far away. I don't want them living with me tho  ;) so I would put them in Camarillo which is inbetween LA and SB I think they would love it there tho.

Third - Bills, My bills, my parents bills and bills of my friends who are really in need. (though I wouldn't divulge how much I actually won because I wouldn't want them begging at my door.  ::) )

Fourth - I'm not a big traveler. You know me and TV... I don't want to go anywhere because I might miss something although I could hook up two TiVos to every tv in every room and maybe get all my shows recorded while I'm gone  ;)

we moved a lot when I was a kid and lived in different countries so I don't need to see other places. People would always visit us and we'd do the whole sightseeing thing so I have grownup hating sight seeing. I want to see Movie Sets and Sound Stages. I would totally go to Orlando because I want to do the whole Theme Park Tour there. I would stay for a couple of weeks and do a different theme park every other day- a day in between for rest and not go on the weekends.

I would go to Vegas because "It's Vegas baby" and even though I've lived there twice I think it'd be nice to go when you can afford to gamble.  (If you hear me planning an W00T get together in Vegas then you know I'm loaded. If I advocate one that someone else is planning I'm just excited to see ya'll. )

Oh and FINALLY!!!

I would start a production company. I already have the logo picked out.

http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa235/snozberries44/qslogo.jpg

The funny thing is- I would hire my friend to be a figure head but we would make decisions together...with me getting final approval on projects and stuff but I would "hire" myself as a production assistant so that no one would know I was in charge...  ;D .  There's too much kiss ass going on in Hollywood. I could sort out the kiss asses and get rid of (through my proxy) the people not getting the job done and once I assembled what I thought was a loyal crew I would come clean.

Do you like video games?  If so want kind?

Love Video games! I wish the day was 48 hours long just so I can play more.

This is totally wrong but I love those first person shooter games. Especially Grand Theft Auto. When I have a bad day at work... the kind where the cops just get on my nerves I play GTA and go on a cop killing rampage!  ;D  The next day all my frustrations are gone and I am happy go lucky at work again!

I think that oughta keep ya busy for awhile.  ;D

hmmm that killed about 30 minutes!

Thanks Patty.

When I was kid we lived in Washington DC there was a seafood rest. somewhere called Cheasapeke House. They had the best fried shrimo. To me Red Lobsters taste just like that. It brings back a lot of memories for me I haven't found any other fried shrimp that comes close.

Lets see fast food.  I hate cheese so know that none of my selections come with cheese and I am a picky eater so I special order a lot!

Burger King- I love their Whopper (no pickles onions or tomatoe) all that stuff gets in the way. I open the whopper and eat the lettuce. Then I add more ketchup b/c they never put enough. The whopper is only one of two places I will actually have mayo on the burger.  (Sometimes I have onion rings b/c I love fried onions but BK's rings always disappoint.)

Carl's Jr-  grilled chicken sandwich- plain...just chicken and bread please (I like to add my own BBQ sauce)!  or the $6 Burger (no pickles or onion) for that one I will open the burger and eat the tomato then the lettuce and then put on more ketchup  ;D ) I know it's an illness... no sides.  I was there the other day and saw they have new shakes mmmm but I was able to resist the shake!

Chick-fil-a
- The original chicken sandwich and sometimes a side of chicken nuggets... I know... but since I don't eat their waffle fries I suppose it's okay!  ;D

McDonald's- my list is long because I love McD's... a hamburger (or a double cheeseburger no cheese) extra onions... I know but on the kids burger they dice the onions so they are digestable. I used to ask for a quarter pounder dressed with hamburger toppings (ie diced onions) but it always confused them so I just started ordering more burgers.  Extra ketchup. I am a Heinz girl but McD burgers requires McD's ketchup.

Sometimes I get nuggets but haven't had any in about 6 months.

oh and apple pies. I think there's crack in McD's Apple pies because I order them EVERY FRIGGIN TIME I GO IN!!!!

and Fries of course McDs has the best fries on the planet I don't care if I find one in my car five weeks later and it still looks the same as the day I bought it I love me some Mickey D'z fries!!!

Wendy's Wendy's has pretty good fries too. In Holland we eat dip fries in Mayo. Its not something I do often... plus you need just the right kind of mayo. but there is something about Wendy's fries that scream for mayo...fortunately I don't eat there alot. I also love their Homestyle chicken sandwich. Plain...just chicken and bread and I eat it that way.

They have good chili too. I have never liked the square burger tho.

KFC Original recipe pls.  For chicken I have developed an unusual habit. I only like wings and legs. It seems to me that chickens have been injected so much with crap that the other pieces are always fatty but the legs and wings never disappoint.

Finally I have a french fry tip for those who love to salt their fries and dip them into ketchup. Instead of salting the fry salt the ketchup that way the salt stays on the fry  ;)

I was born in Holland, in Utrecht. My father was in the Air Force and stationed there in the late 60s.
We moved to the states when I was 3 or 4. I only spoke Dutch and my mom spoke some English but my father had immersed himself in Holland and spoke Dutch most of the time and always with her family so English was never spoken in the home.

When we came back to the states my father had a 3 week leave so we stayed with his "sister" really she was his aunt (long messed up family history there) they're only a year or two apart and were raised as siblings. Something more for a PM ya know... Needless to say I wasn't talking much but I have lots of pics of that time.

Anyway- My dad got his orders and we moved to Riverside CA.  and shortly we got there my dad got his orders for Viet Nam Leaving my limited English speaking mom with a Toddler in 1970's Cali woo hoo!

Would it surprise you to learn that I learned English from TV?  Electric Company was awesome for that! Plus Seasame Street and Romper Room.  And I have vivid memories of Cal Worthington (& his dog spot) commercials... funny what the mind holds.

I used to love to fly but developed a severe anxiety about it when I was 15 so I haven't been back to Holland since I was 14.

Oh in a sad twisted turn of events I was fluent in dutch until high school. Apparently my aptitude for languages only allows me to hold two languages at a time so when I had to take Spanish in high school I was having problems because I could only come up with the dutch words. Finally I let go of the dutch to take in the spanish. Now I speak some weird hybrid of both languages. I know enough of each to get by if someone speaks to me VEEEERRYYY SLOOOWWLY  ;D .

As I say Ik verstaand Netherlands mar ik praat neit so good.  Sorry Henk I actually never learned to read or write dutch. My mom hates that she let me lose the language the way I did.

Funny thing is, well for me anyway, is that what I thought was fluent dutch apparently wasn't  quite so fluent. See my maternal grandmother was from Suriname. And my maternal grandfather was from Holland. So my mother lived half her life in Holland and Half her life in Suriname because her parents had houses in both countries or something... I don't really know. I have pics of me in Suriname but I was an infant.... like 18 months.

Anyway- all these years I didn't know but my moms family speaks their own hybrid language a mix of Dutch and Surinamese (or what ever it is)... I work with a guy who is dutch and I said something to him in dutch one day and he said "What the hell language are you speaking?" and that's how I learned that I am quasi-trilingual well I guess quad lingual if you add English too.  ;D

I have become far too Americanized to feel Dutch but I am always proud to claim it when I can.

You probably speak (spoke) Surinamese Dutch as it is (was?) a Dutch colony.

yeah it was definately a hybrid of the two languages. its funny though because the entire family speaks it so I had no idea that what i was speaking was different than the Dutch Henk speaks. well most of it's the same really there are just some slang words my family picked up that was incorporated to my use of the language. Since I was never formally educated I just assumed the words I used were words every one knew.

If you dial 911 from a mobile phone does it still go to the local dispatch centre?

Yeah in the Santa Barbara depending on where you are when you call it will go to the Santa Barbara City Police, Santa Barbara County Sheriff, California Highway Patrol or the University Police at UCSB.

Of course there is a margin of error if you happen to be close to the invisible line that divides jurisdiction-
but the call centers are set up so that once we figure out where you are calling from we can easily transfer you to the right agency.

Thanks.  It's something we were discussing last week at James's Wolf Cub meeting.  I wasn't sure how things worked here in the US

In the UK the 'area code' you dial to a mobile phone doesn't tell you the area of the country they live in - it tells you you are dialling a mobile phone.  When you dial the emergency services it doesn't go to your local area emergency operator necessarily so you need to know in great detail where you are located so they can pass your call on correctly.

wow that's scary.  I get calls from people who have no idea where they are and you want to help but its hard. Now the cell phones have GPS and we just installed a mapping system that plots their location on a map. It gets close but not spot on.

I think in smaller areas (more rural) the 911 calls route to not necessarily the nearest to your present location but to the nearest one where your phone service is located.  When I moved from eastern Ohio to western Ohio several years ago, and called 911 because of a car accident that happened behind me, it routed my call back to eastern ohio (some 200 miles away).  But then that was 5 years ago, so maybe it's different now.  It might be worth looking into your cell phone service provider for more information.

Did you ever see the episode of Without a trace about the 911 operator?
Season 5, Episode 3: 911
Original Air Date—8 October 2006

I did... I love it when shows depict a dispatcher. My all time faves...mostly because they are so hilarious are an episode of SVU "OMG I think it's him" I don't remember the actual episode I just remember the dispatcher rec'ing a call from a serial rapist killer and her reaction to it.

Also, my all-time fav is from a Chips episode titled 11-99  (11-99 is a code created by CHP it is the code officers use in the state of CA for Officer Down)

anyway Grossie has a new beeper on his belt that is supposed to alert the dispatch center if the officer is prone. Grossie falls chasing a stray dog, the beeper is activated and the dispatcher totally freaks out... it is HILARIOUS!!

I use it in training and tell the trainees..."Don't do this!"  ;D

I guess that is true about all occupations.  Rarely does Hollywood ever get it right, simply because they "jazz" it up to make it more... dramatic I guess.  ::)
I know the shows that I've seen librarians portrayed on almost always portray them being so snooty and with a stick up their backside.  Where in real life, no librarian I ever met was like that.  lol

I know every nurse I ever talked to said the show "ER" was so awful because it just made them all look imcompetant and horny.  ;D  Not saying the latter might not be entirely a bluff, but well yeah, you know what I mean.  ;D

;D

hate to tell you this but I was in a library a couple weeks back (classes ya know) and I borrowed 6 books.
Unfortunately one of the books landed on my overloaded floor and precariously placed (unused) speaker stand was accidentally put onto of it. This speaker stand has a large nail on the bottom to keep it place on carpet.

Unfortunately the nail went through the cover first 5 pages of the book.  :-[ The first two pages of reading material didn't have a hole but a dent but there was a hole in the tille page and those mysterious blank pages books have that I am finally thankful for.

I need the book for a couple more days and put tape over the hole in the cover so it would tear any further -  mind you the spine had already been taped by the library to keep it intact.

I took the book and apologized for the damage and offered to pay for it. The guy helping me was very kind. The woman at the reference desk looked at the book and gave me a cold look. Then she asked who put tape on it- she rolled her eyes when I said I did.

It was a lender from another branch so they have to find out if that branch wants me to pay. After the guy walked back to me she said very loudly..."And make sure you note it on her account"  IT WAS AN ACCIDENT FOR PETE'S SAKE! I could've just put the book in the bin and walked but I tried to do the right thing. What a bitch!  >:(

;D  OK, you found the ONE mean librarian.  We try to hide her at various libraries but SOMEONE always finds her.  ;) ;D

I wouldn't worry about it too much, you did do the right thing.  Stuff happens, ya know?  Even I, as a librarian, have had my share of...erm...accidents with books.
AND, like you, it seemed to always be with books that came from other libraries.  It must be a curse, I'm thinking!

But the books got revenge, this massive pharmacy book fell off the top shelf and hit me in the head, I was seeing stars.  ;D

OK, sorry to hijack your thread to talk about librarians (I have my own thread about that!)

Since you and I are television addicts:

What are your favorite shows?  What shows can you not stand?  What shows/characters would you change, for instance, you really like a character from one series, but the writers for the series they are on, write TERRIBLE dialogue or scenes for them, how would you change it or put them on another series?  I hope that makes sense... lol

OK, so given that you like Mafia 3 something or other (sorry, can't remember) what other music do you like?

and for random question of the day, what size shoe do you wear?  Do you like wearing shoes at home or do you go barefoot as much as you can?

you can hijack my thread anytime you like. I should find your library thread since I've had a question about a short story that's been dogging me for years. btw you and Gis maybe I have found my connection to locating it! but that's for another time. . .

Favorite shows- I was going to say besides the obvious? But I feel the need to include them.

I am almost compulsive about the shows I watch and the list is long but I will clean it up a bit.

B&W shows- I like the standards like Andy Griffith and Lucy (tho I'm a little sick of Lucy since it's always on!)
My favs are Leave It to Beaver, Donna Reed, Dick Van Dyke & My Three Sons (It started in B&W) I miss when TV Land only showed old shows or when Nick @ Nite boasted an all B&W line up.

70's Mary Tyler Moore, Charlie's Angels (I can't explain it but it really impacted me growing up!), Vega$ (I wish this were on DVD).  I hated All in the Family growing up but I love it now.

80's - Facts of Life (to be fair it could've gone in 70s too), Fame, Kate & Allie

90's/00's Friends, Charmed, Alias, Medium (can't tell if it's canceled or coming back as a midseason replacement)

Current  Bones, Criminal Minds, Heroes, Life, Ugly Betty, Simpsons, King of the Hill, SVU, CI, Lost

Reality/Talk shows
- Oprah, the View, Amazing Race, Survivor, Top Chef, Hell's Kitchen, THE SOUP!!!!

I really scaled that list down...

The truth is I love dialogue; so well written shows capture my interest!

Cagney & Lacey
Roseanne  (Joss Whedon, Buffy & Amy Sherman, Gilmore Girls- both wrote for this show!)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Designing Women
Murphy Brown
Gilmore Girls
Veronica Mars
Third Watch
House

^these are, in my opinion, some of the best shows that have ever been produced.

My So-Called Life, John Doe, Boomtown, Related, The Inside & Women's Murder Club (oh and Veronica Mars) are shows that were canceled far too soon

SHOWS I CAN'T STAND:

I hate shows that depict black people in a negative light (read that as buffoonish) I would've loved Good Times but I hate JJ and never would have had that character. He added very little to the series IMO.

Likewise, while Archie Bunker was 'lovable' I find George Jefferson intolerable.

I hate the new shows centered on people famous for nothing at all.  Simple Life would have been better if Paris and Nicole had to live in LA earning 1000 a month. Watching them trying to do with out Guuchi, Prada and limos and have to pay bills and cook would have been far more entertaining than watching them sabotage someone's business.

The Hills and the ....of Love shows are obnoxious.

Any talk show where people throw things or fight is awful.

All those shows that rec'd ratings this summer Japanese Game show, fall off the ball (whatever) and that new one on fox Hole in the wall...Ridiculous.

YEah I watched Queen Bees but more in a "roll your eyes" what is America coming to sort of way!

The mix-mash question is intriguing but requires some thought.

Off the top of my head I thought I would like to do a little CSI shake up. Get all my favs of the various CSI shows on one and fire the boring ones. Read boring as... David Caruso, William Peterson and that NY Dude is that Gary Sinse?

I would also like to fire Anthony Lapaglia and Poppy Montgomery from Without a Trace- what is that accent she uses anyway? The actress is Aussie or english or something and the character is supposed to have a West Virginia (I think) accent...Its horrible.

I have no problem with the writing of either Bones or House but I wonder how Brennan would react to house and how House would react to Brennan?

I need to think about this one some more.

SHOES.

I wear an 81/2 wide. I always wear tennis shoes, sometimes walking/hiking boots. never flip flops or sandals.

I have a weird anti-foot thing. I don't want to see feet, touch feet or think about feet. The only time I touch my own is when I am in the shower or when I put on socks. I know it's weird.... Tam's current myspace photo totally creeps me out!  ;D

Having said that tho. I have noticed that whenever people wear flipflops they  ALWAYS wind up touching their feet or playing with their toes but rarely do they do this while wearing PROPER shoes.  Check it out next time you're sitting somewhere with someone who has on flipflops .

Oops I forgot the music question.

Three 6 Mafia was the group.
I like rap music, if you look on my top friends of myspace you'll see Playboy 7 (he's a rapper) I've known him since he was a toddler and I was 5.  The music can be misogynistic but it doesn't bother me.  Whoopi Goldberg says she has no problem w/ people using the "n" word because they are not talking about her... for the record I hate that word and only tolerate it in my rap music but when rappers call women b's or hoes I know they aren't talking about me so I don't care.

My favs tho... the music I cannot be without is TLC, Janet Jackson, Eminem, Boyz to Men, Journey, Bob Segar  the Dreamgirls Soundtrack, and a random sampling of 80s music.

How did you get into the line of work that you are now?
What did you do before this?
What did you want to be when you were a little girl?
How long have you been doing what you do?
If you could do anything in the universe (as a job) what would you do?

BTW ....... KFC, only legs, wings and breasts for me. The rest is highly suspect and I check the box before leaving because the young kids serving haven't got a clue which is which.  :o  ....and they NEVER think to include the little moist towels to clean up with either. >:(
