Good topic Bill! :)

Ok....

have you found any new pieces recently?

how many of your current pieces did you find at thrift stores?

what's your favorite one?

approximately how many do you own?

Thanks!!

I just found a new piece last night.  It's really neat.  It's a 2.5QT cream-colored round casserole with burgundy flowers on it. Very cool.  Got it at Goodwill for $2.

I'd say I found about 80% of my current collection at Goodwill or yard sales.  Sometimes, I've resorted to Ebay...

My favorite would be this:

I'm not sure how many I own, but here is a picture of my collection... this isn't all of it, only what I can't display in my kitchen:

If you're interested, you can see more of my collection at http://flickr.com/photos/8313882@N07/.  But I warn you, I'm not the best photographer and some of my images are blurry.

Hi Billzy

I actually am not sure why it closed, but probably due to cost-cutting reasons.  I know the company was sold several years ago to a huge corporation, but is still sold under the name Pyrex because of the familiarity and dependability/durability associated with it.  I think that plant in Sunderland was one of those stragglers and they finally had to close it down.

Oh Wow!!! you have an amazing collection, Bill!  :o

Everytime I am at a thrift store I check around for them but either: A.) someone else is a Pyrex collector and swipes them all up, or B.) There were no Pyrex donaters at our Goodwills. ;D

Do the patterns differ between the two countries? I have one Pyrex bowl/dish and I didn't notice the pattern on any of your Pyrex.  Of course it might be a more recent design; I don't know how old the bowl is because I 'borrowed' it from my mother-in-law.

yes, the patterns do differ.  the English ones seem more "hand-painted" while the US ones are almost like stencils.  what does yours look like?

It is a shallow dish about six inches across.  The main part is white and the design is of blue irises with orangey/brownish buds and flowers around them.

Karen I'd noticed that too, I guess the markets would have been different for particular designs in each country?

Loving that 70's Retro box design Billzy (the 'Bake n Carry' casserole) btw..is that really  your Pyrex storage area with the little window and very thick walls  :D

OK Bill...I am so stoked! I went camping this past weekend up near Clarion, Pa...and they had this HUGE flea market (that they have every Saturday)...and I hit the jackpot! Here are the pieces that I found. They actually had a few more (those colorful stacking bowls...but they weren't in the greatest shape)..and a few mugs, etc....but I chose these 3 pieces to get me started. I was so excited!!!! :)

Ok Sir Billzy.... here is my question:

Casserole dishes... I have the clear glass pyrex ones, however I have heard that the blue ones or even the rose colored ones bake better than the clear ones. I am actually trying to find a set of blue ones - any truth to this?

Thanks Darlin'

I have the blue ones myself, but I don't know that they actually cook better.  From my experience, the older opal (milkglass) Pyrex seems to be a little better.  I would shy away completely from the new Pyrex, as it's been known to explode in the oven or even on the counter top.  Pyrex was sold to a larger company (World Kitchens) a few years back and they use a different process and different glass than before... must be cheaper.  It's too susceptible to breaking as a result of temperature fluxuations.  The older stuff is better, as long as there are no cracks of course, which would reduce its integrity.  The blue and rose colored pieces aren't too old (probably from the 80's or early 90's) but they are still from the timeframe before Pyrex was sold, therefore making it safer, in my opinion. :)  I hope that helps!

This is great.  When was the ban put into place?  What type of hunting is banned? There was a bowl made for the UK with ducks on it that I really like.  But I prefer the floral prints :)

Thanks again Darlin'

No problem!! Anytime.  I had forgotten they have that green version out now... it's nice looking but not if it's exploded all over your kitchen!  :o

Hunters are supposedly not allowed to chase a fox with hounds (for the kill) but we all know hunts are still going on illegally  :(

Ducks?? you might like to consider these 1940's plaster flying ducks (wall ornaments) very collectable here
