Subject: Ask me about Severe Wx. Outbreaks/Storm Chasing

Written By: SpaceHog on 08/29/13 at 1:38 pm

I  lived in Tornado Alley (St. Charles,MO) from 1996 to 2012. I also did some storm chasing too.

If you're from MO/IL/KS or anywhere else in T.A. ask me about a particular outbreak, I'd likely have some info about it.

P.S. If you're a New England resident, ask me about snowstorms, too.

Do you still chase storms?  It looks exciting but scary at the same time.

What was the amount of snow you've gotten?

I've since moved back to New England (Cape Cod). So right now, I'm an armchair chaser.

As for snow, The most I've ever gotten was 24" and that was Christmas 2002. This was the same storm that hit New England hard on Christmas Day of '02.

Do you recall the F4 tornado that hit Hallam, Nebraska in June, 2004? It was at the time the most powerful tornado ever recorded and it touched down less than 20 miles from where I lived at the time.

It's one thing to see tornado damage on the news or even to see it firsthand in another place, but when it happens practically in your own backyard and destroys structures that have been there all your life (it wiped out my rival high school) it's rather unsettling.  :o

I was 15 going on 16 in 2004. The Hallam Tornado was on May 22nd. I had read about it. That outbreak of storms missed MO entirely, or just grazed it.

Here is the outlook at 12 AM on the 22nd:

Here is from later in the day. There were Severe Tstorm warnings out in MO at the time.

Have you ever actually seen a tornado firsthand?

I am in Massachusetts and there was a devastating tornado in June 1, 2011.  We're not Tornado Alley, but there are a couple a year, and the occasional earthquake.

I've been obsessed with tornadoes since I was a little kid!

Do you have any personal photos of tornadoes that you've seen?

No, I haven't seen any in person, but I was in Maine a few years back and there was a microburst in the middle of the night, sounded like a sonic boom.  In the morning we went out and it looked like a copse of trees had been turned into matchsticks.

What are nor'easters?

A snow storm that comes down from Canada headed in an easterly direction to New England.  Our biggest snowstorms have been nor'easters, so when the weatherman says we are "headed for a nor'easter" we figure we are in for some trouble.

Yep. Can be pretty scary if you're not prepared.
