What do you like about living in New York?

Wow, so many things:

1. I like the hustle and bustle of NYC. It truly is "The City That Never Sleeps".

2. I like the diversity here. So many people from different walks of life. With that diversity comes so many different foods, festivals and holidays. Also, over 800 languages spoken EVERY DAY.

3. I like how safe it is for a city with 8.4 million people. NYC was a decaying metropolis from 1975-1993 with high unemployment, extremely high crime rates, high drug use, more people leaving the city than moving in, blackouts, almost going bankrupt. That period was crazy for NYC but ever since the mid 1990s....especially post-9/11, NYC has rebounded heavily and now everything that was bad about the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s is no longer a problem. Last year, 334 people were killed in NYC (that's compared to 2,000 people killed in 1990 - the highest homicide total in NYC's recorded history). Last year's homicide rate was the lowest since the mid 1960s (when homicides started to be recorded in NYC).

3. The state of politics, NYC is a very liberal and Democrat run city. Of course, NYC is not perfect but overall the city is welcoming and warm (the rude stereotype is totally not true...most native NYers are nice. However, there are assholes here and everywhere). The only one of the 5 boroughs that is not Democratic leaning is Staten Island (the whitest and most suburban of the 5 boroughs)....Staten Island leans Republican/Conservative (it's where 90% of NYC Republicans are from :-X). Some of us in the other 4 boroughs even forget about Staten Island sometimes and consider it apart of New Jersey (In 1993, 65% of Staten Islanders voted to secede from NYC ;D).

4. I love the history of NYC. You have old architecture mixed in with bustling skyscrapers. You have our Dutch and British history, our Civil War history, Wall Street, etc. I just love it here.

5. The museums....the Guggenheim, MOMA, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History, etc.

6. Central Park, The Bronx Zoo, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Prospect Park.

7. The Empire State Building

8. My favorite sports teams, the NY Knicks, the NY Rangers, the NY Yankees & the NY Giants (though they do play in NJ).

9. Broadway (absolutely fantastic plays).

10. Being in New York State. Even though, NYC HEAVILY overshadows the rest of the state (Upstate NY is lovely)....I still love ALL of NY (NYC, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, Plattsburgh, Long Island and everything in between). Also, in New York State we have free college now (for all public 4 year universities in the state starting this Fall).

What was your first memory?

I don't actually know/remember what my first memory is. However, if you mean what my oldest memory is then, I have 2 that I can think of....they both happened in 2001 when I was 2:

1. It involved my Bugs Bunny in a RCMP outfit (Canadian Mountie) teddy bear that I used to love (I still have it after 16+ years...though most of his RCMP clothes is gone). So, I dropped Bugs on a sticky piece of paper and it got stuck...I was pulling Bugs off when half of his right eye broke off and I remember crying because of that (I thought that I actually hurt Bugs Bunny, the character in real life ;D).

2. The other memory is of my nephew (but he's like a cousin) who was 1 at the time trying to push me off my tricycle. I remembered getting angry and my aunt decides to take a picture of this ordeal and I remember deliberately putting up my hand with my mean face on trying to block the flash of the camera (it was a very "ancient" camera by todays standards). I put my hand up because I was mad and didn't want my picture taken. I was sitting on my tricycle with an angry face, hand up...meanwhile my nephew holding on to the handles of the tricycle is looking at the camera with an "innocent" stare ;D.

I have been to the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Anguilla, St. Maarten and Jamaica.

However, the last time I was in the UK, France and the Netherlands was 16 years ago (January 2001). I don't remember anything from that trip because I was only 1.5 years old. I do hope to visit those countries again in the future though.

I also want to visit Canada, Spain, Japan, the Bahamas in the future.

I like the mystique and charm about being a King. Also, many constitutional monarchs are national symbols and can be very unifying figures (like in the UK, Spain, Sweden and Japan for example). Since they are constitutional monarchs they have no political affiliation and usually don't make political remarks...so they can be looked up to as a national treasure.

Of course, some people view monarchies as antiquated, old fashioned and archaic but as long as they are not an absolute monarchy like in Saudi Arabia then I see no problem with having monarchies. Constitutional monarchies can also bring in tons of tourists (the UK is the most famous example for this).

So the idea of me being "The Reign Man" means that I am King...and when you're a king you reign (aka rule). That's why my personal text is "Long Live the King". I just added "99" at the end because I was born in 1999.

Reign Man is also the nickname of former NBA player Shawn Kemp (who most notably played for the now defunct Seattle Supersonics in the '90s).

LOL, yes. My family doesn't really go to restaurants and most of the "best" NYC restaurants are in Manhattan.

We live in Brooklyn (and not the hipster/gentrified part of Brooklyn) and most of those restaurants in Manhattan are fancy and expensive. You have you remember that my mother and stepfather are Jamaican immigrants (both are naturalized US citizens). So it's not really their thing to be going to snobby restaurants in the city. We go primarily to small local Jamaican restaurants or Red Lobster lol  ;D.

This might seem very random and odd to suddenly get asked this, but do you remember a couple years ago on another forum (Popedia), I once made a thread discussing what was the most quintessential American state? A few people gave their thoughts, but you seemed the most interested in the topic as I noticed you contributed the most to it and do you remember we discussed how it was either Illinois or Ohio that were the most quintessential states? I was just wondering if you'd be interested in discussing this topic again here because I've been researching this sort of stuff a lot recently and have gained a lot more knowledge on American geography and culture since, and from what I've found, I personally think based on culture, linguistics, demographics, population density, climate, and history, that the quintessential or archetypical American small town/city is Hamilton, Ohio. There were a few other towns/cities that I think qualified for being 'prototypical' American cities, among them being Peoria, Illinois, Muncie, Indiana, St. Joseph, Missouri, and Decatur, Illinois. But I feel as though Hamilton had the edge over all of them because unlike those towns that are more isolated, it is located just 30 miles north of a big city (Cincinnati) which means it's within a large suburban region but all the while still being near a rural area. I also picked it for a couple of other reasons. Of all the suburbs of Cincinnati, it's the largest with a population of 62,000, and because of its location; Along with many cities and villages in Southwest Ohio, it was one of the first towns to be founded west of the Alleghany Mountains after the American Revolution, meaning it was once part of the frontier but is still old enough to have existed for the vast majority of the nation's history. Additionally if you read the history section on the town's Wikipedia page, you'll see how its history very much mirrors that of the whole nation, throughout its 200 years, it has been characterized as a leader in innovation. When agriculture was the nation's mainstay, Hamilton manufactured farming machinery; when the country became industrial, Hamilton rose to strength with new technologies in stoves, streetcars, and steel, with the rust belt decline of big industry in the late 1900s, Hamilton went through yet another metamorphosis, defining the new American economy of small manufacturing and service industries. It's for all these reasons I consider Hamilton, Ohio to be the quintessential American small town, and I just thought I'd share these thoughts with you to see whether you'd agree or not, since you have an interest for American geography like me.
