Anyway, the team that beat the Irish is going to play the Mountaineers next Saturday.  I'm trying to watch the NASCAR race in Rockingham, a race I attended six years ago!

Understrength or not, Man U will walk it, by courtesy of a hat-trick or so from Solksjaer....

Fergie will complain in the press that United weren't given enough peanlties in the first 1.6 minutes of the match, and a Leicester player will be sent off just to ensure nothing happens 'against the script'....

Then again maybe I'm just mad cos Leeds are having a crap season....

Kurt Warner may return from the injured list as early as the 18th, the Rams' MNF match up with the Chicago Bears. But the way Bulger has played in his stead, I'm not sure if I want Kurt and his 1-8 TD to INT ratio back on the field so soon.

Coolness. Someone else who is neutral, as opposed to totally derogatory, about "the other football". Soccer is, without doubt, my favourite sport. It's the only one I can play, to any degree whatsoever. And I do watch it to excess in the village. Two of the American Pro sports (Baseball, Gridiron Football) do not cater at all to those overseas. And the other two major team sports (Basketball and hockey have limited appeal. Basketball in Yugoslavia, Russia, and Australia; hockey in Canada, Germany, and the Scandinavian Lapland countries.) None of these are popular in Great Britain, as far as I know, although rugby and (unmentionable summer sport) are similar to gridiron football and baseball respectively.

Oh, but basketball, hockey, are still played over here. Even the few American Football (I'll call it that to differentiate from soccer) teams there are do take their sport seriously, as do the Manchester United's of the American Football world. I guess it's easier for us to love the lower-scoring games.

I can see how you'd think baseball is boring and dumb, and the people who play it are not "real" athletes.  However, it takes a WHOLE lot of skill to be able to hit a 98-mph fastball or a 75-mph curveball...it's similar to the split-second reflexes a hockey goalie must have to snag a 90+-mph puck.  So we shouldn't discredit baseball completely.  To each his own!   ::)

The 'Barmey Army' is a term generically used for English sports supporters who travel to away sporting fixtures.

So named as they make their presence known by being loud, enthusiastic and silly.

Hi Dude !

Sorry I missed this - I am unsure - but I think the term Test effectively means what it says - a Test of one Country against another.

But definitely anything but friendlies !  Test are the real thing.

In Cricket they refer to competition between countries.

As you like to find out about it the current Test playing countries are :

Australia
England
New Zealand
West Indies
India
Pakistan
Sri Lanka
Bangladesh
Zimbabwe

As you may notice there is a very strong English influence with nearly all of those countries being under Colonial rule at some stage.

The "barmy army" traditionally refered to the English unmentionable summer sport followers who were just a little off kilter. Now, Sheffield Wednesday are a soccer team, who, due to religious decisions, and so forth, refused to play on other days except Wednesdays, and they, apparently, are responsible not only for the invention of the term "barmy army", to describe their early nutcase supporters, but to describe any nutcases that go around grounds and whatnot. Now, Sheffield, is a big place for its steel industry, and hence the United team, being known as The Blades. Sheffield can also claim to have brung football to the world, founding Sheffield FC Amateurs in 1857. The early supporters of this team were politely refered to as "the barmy army", and the term permeated through to many other teams.

Sheffield, of course, today, have their better days behind them, but of course, used to have them. Now seventh in the second-best division in the country, which, inexplicably, is called The First Division.

The general impression at this end is that your guys just don't have enough mongrel in them Bobo, not enough killer instinct....

Aus is very strong now - you could pick two or three test sides of decent quality.

The big worry over here is that not enough of the younger players are getting a go in the side - look at Hayden for example, how well he is going now, but it took till age 28 to cement his place in the side....

Subject: Re: worthless SPORTS thread

England's really giving a chance to the young guys. Today's team contains Dawson (a player who I'm mostly unfamiliar with), Alec at 7, and Rob Key at 6. And good luck to them. Unfortunately, it seems that Australia have kept at least 7 of what I consider their regular squad in for this match. More than half of the team consists of players who it doesn't matter where you put them, they perform well.

http://www.cricketbase.com/stumpslive/?MIval=latestcard&matchid=7009

On the plus side, if any, White and Tudor seem to be having good matches.

Mountaineers dodge a bullet when Pittsburgh, on fourth down inside the West Virginia 20, throws an incomplete pass with 12 seconds left and the Mountaineers defeat the Panthers, 24-17, in the Backyard Brawl.  The Mountaineers will finish second in the Big East and will most likely play in the Gator Bowl on New Year's Day.  WAY TO GO MOUNTAINEERS!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

And Marshall easily defeats Ball State, 38-14.  Byron Leftwich, although suffering from the shin injury he got in the Herd's loss to Akron, started.  Cardinals running back Marcus Merriweather did not have a good game, although he did manage to break the 4,000 career rushing yard mark when he scored on a 12-yard touchdown late in the game.  Marshall now takes on Toledo, a 42-24 winner over Bowling Green, in the MAC Championship game next Saturday in Huntington, WV.

As mentioned in the "Endless Addition" thread, Ben Davis High School won it's record 7th state title today, over Fort Wayne Snider. It was also the 8th overall for the school's coach Dick Dullahan, who also won 1 with Carmel. I was at the 3 class championship games they played at the RCA Dome. That's why I haven't been on the boards to give the college scores. Just as well.  :-/

I am usually not a North Carolina B-Ball fan, but I was hoping Sean May, from Bloomington and the son of former IU standout Scott May, would make an impact for the Tar Heels. Now that he is injured and lost for the year, the Heels are winning. Probably should have stayed at home, Sean. ::)
End Quote

I beg to differ, Indy. May being lost for the season has had a big impact on the Tar Heels season. Since his injury, teams are killing Carolina "in the paint". They have no big man presence other than May. (By the way, this is the first year since 1963 that 3 freshmen started the opening game.) So pleeeeeaase don't give May any ideas about leaving Chapel Hill. We (I'm a BIG Heels fan from WAY back) can use him BIG TIME in the future!!

Yep, most people think driving around in circles is worthless, but there are two NASCAR events where the drivers DO have to turn right 'cause they're on road courses!  But the only major sporting event I ever attended was the fall 1996 race at Rockingham, NC, won by Ricky Rudd…and I loved every minute of it!  In fact, NASCAR was my dead brother's favorite sport, and the only real reason he had to watch ESPN!  (I miss the NASCAR races on ESPN)

The U.S. soccer team lost an exhibition game over the weekend to Argentina.  It really does stink too because of the lack of media attention the team receives.  They played so well in last year's World Cup(almost made it to the semis).  A lot of people(in America) say the NCAA Basketball Tournament is the the most exciting sporting event to watch, I'd say it's the World Cup.

Here's why: 1. Teams are representing their country rather than a city or college, 2. The tournament only takes place every four years.....

Given that soccer is one of the few sports that the USA bothers to test itself against other international opposition on any sort of regular basis..........and frankly, in the World Cup's case, because FIFA says they have too.......the lack of acknowledgement they got from within your own country during the world cup certainly did not match the wonderful achievement...

Anyone ever see the Women's Bowling Tour? I use to take a gander when they were still wearing minis and bowling. But lost it when they started wearing shorts. I'm glad some of the better looking bowlers like the Wagners (Lisa and Laila, no relation) and Kim Adler kept wearing the sexy hosiery, but Tish Johnson? Braaack!

I agree with you.  I would have hoped that more Americans would have taken notice, but unfortuntaely not a lot did.  Soccer is such a popular sport in so many countries other than the U.S., so it makes since that fans of the game(from whatever country) would have appreciated how much improvement the American team showed last year compared to their dreadful performance in '98.  My belief is that their success is directly linked to the fact that so many more American players are playing for European clubs nowadays.  That has really helped raise the standard for them not only in Friendlies, but also the World Cup.

By the way, congratulations to the Aussies on a well deserved victory the other day!

Thanks F-Fresh

The same applies to the Aussie team - most of the players are European based.

Aus suffers from the same anti-soccer sentiment as does the US - although here is has the most junior participation of any sport - it can't get a look in with the media though - though of course the media being what they are will happily seize on any reports of violence at a mtach  ::)

The best thing about the Aussie victory (apart from fulfilling a lifetime's wish for me) was that they hadn't played an international for 14 months !

Well Purdue became the second Indiana Big Ten School to lose to Northwestern on it's home floor last night. In fact Indiana and Purdue are the only Big Ten schools the Mildcats has beaten this year. And they couldn't beat Michigan or Ohio State at home. So Northwestern has run out of wins this year. They've never been to the Big Dance, the only major college not to do so. So when the Conference Tournament goes by, don't look for IU or Purdue to take them lightly again.

The Daytona 500 will be run Sunday and although I'm not nearly as big a NASCAR fan as I used to be (the sport has taken a wrong turn in the last few years, IMHO), it is the premier stock car race in the world, and I thought it deserved, at least, a mention, in the WST. Dale Earnhardt Inc. teamates Jeff Green and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. start 1-2, in that order, but I'm picking Ricky Rudd, in a Ford (that would be a major upset) to win. Anyone else have an opinion?

I wonder how celebrities with duel Brit-Aussie citizenship feel about this rivalry (The Bee Gees, Naomi Watts, Thandie Newton, Olivia Newton-John, Guy Ritchie, etc.). Even US born-Aussie bred Mel Gibson would have trouble picking sides. (I am aware nobody could give a rat's a** to what celebs feel about sports.)
