around 9:50 or so is when I did the amIright parody update.  I bet anything the author pages script is hosing things.  I've known for quite some time that it's inefficient and causes problems.  I guess it's time for me to write a better script.

It's funny how the server is under high stress.  Shouldn't we be under high stress by seeing the high stress errors so often? lol

I've been working on a new script for the parody authors pages on amIright.  That's probably the reason. Hopefully, now that I've stopped making tons of coding mistakes, it'll be a little cleaner.

I just saw it in action myself, I wasn't quite done with the script and decided to rush in a few more changes for the day.  Sure enough, hitting it a lot in a short period of time caused high server load and the software kicked in protection mode.  I'll have to make sure I stop doing that.

I hope not.

I can change the value which triggers this.  Might be a day or two since I need to look it up again, I haven't done it in a long time.  I keep a journal for stuff like this now, so hopefully once I do it again, I'll write it down in case I need to change it again.

ok.  As of 6PM, it shouldn't happen again.

For those who want the technical explanation:

One (almost all of the sites) didn't have a fail setting for unknown email addresses.  So what happened is some clueless spammer tried guessing email addresses on one of the domains and started blasting thousands of non-existent email addresses on the server.  Since there was a default address where it dumped the spam for the non-existent spam, the server started to overload trying to save all the garbage.

I've now changed the behavior so that email for accounts that don't exist will bounce back to the sender.

Is the site running slowly for anyone else this evening? For the past several hours here and Amiright have been taking a lot longer to load pages than normal, and a good quarter of the time pages are failing to load at all.

I checked the server stress log a bit earlier and nothing looked out of the ordinary there.

"Page created in 4.95 seconds with 22 queries." - that was refreshing the front page a minute ago. It took closer to 25 seconds for everything to come up though.

Other times are around the 0.165 second range but are much slower on my machine. Maybe it's something on my end, but I'm not having problems with YouTube or any other sites.

I see from an automated email in my inbox tonight, that the server company did some automated updates.. I think they usually occur around that time.  I guess it can't run without interruptions all the time... and due to the time differences, I guess we can't have a time that won't interrupt the board for someone.

I'm running the site updates for amIright/amIwrong.  It's usually not that bad, so maybe the site was busier than usual this morning when I ran it.

If you notice a bit of slow down - it's because I have been moving threads tonight.
I try to do them quite a few minutes apart, so I apologize if anyone has slow loading pages! ;)

I though it was, I noticed that threads had been moved, so that I made no enquiry on it.

Thanks Philip!

I tried to give a heads up - when I moved a few earlier it didn't seem to have any bearing on the site, but a couple were large threads, and I noticed the slow down - so I thought I should post about just to be sure! ;)

Does the stress that the server is under affect e-mail notifications?

I figured we were done with those already.  You don't have to move the really old ones that aren't active anymore.

Nah - I wasn't moving really old ones - just a few that people said to me that they still used but couldn't find the page they were on. ;)

And I merged 2 topics that were completely identical into the WOW - that one took a minute.

Shouldn't have to more anymore now - you are definitely right! 8)

Probably, it is a set time for clearing things up, and the server owners think that everyone is asleep at that time?

aww what are you doing awake at 3 AM anyways >grin<

I can't check it until I'm home, and I was too busy cleaning my woodshop last night to get on the computer.  I'll probably examine it this weekend (three day weekend here in the States)
