It counts how many applauds you get from other users. You have to have at least 100 posts to give them to others.
Applauds usually are given when helping others, if someone laughs or agrees with another's post, some give them out in waves from time to time(just because they want to).
You can only give an applaud to same person every 24 hours, but you can applaud more than one person in one day.
