Subject: Red 'x' displayed instead of Pic

Written By: Green Lantern on 01/22/08 at 4:16 am

Hi Chucky.

I think it was post #5900 .... in the MC Hammer thread:  http://www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=21140.msg1518859#msg1518859

I posted this pic .... and 'nally'; 'whistledog' and 'Philip Eno' have all reported inability to see that particular pic. It shows up just fine in my browser. I even cleared my cache, logged out and in ... and was able to bring it up again !

They apparently are all using MSIE.  I'm suspecting switching to another brower .... e.g, 'Firefox' (which I use .... version 2.0.0.9) .... or Opera may solve the problem. Any input here ?

I hate to think that others here are seeing that/ red x's  instead of my pics as intended. Hmm ..... maybe I could download them then upload them to imageshack etc; when that happens .... but a bit of a hassle ....  :-X

Oh yes ... the URL of that pic (for what it's worth) : http://www.cedmagic.com/featured/spider-man/spiderman-in-web-0013.jpg

I used IE, can that be a factor?

I could not see the image on Firefox too.

??? :o ???

Which version of Firefox were you using ?

Did you get exactly the same error message ?

Well, knock me over with a feather. I am currently in two browsers .... both Firefox ... and Opera ... I am posting this reply in Opera ... having logged in under Firefox. Anyhow, I've just tried clicking on that link in Opera .... only to get:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /featured/spider-man/spiderman-in-web-0013.jpg on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Furthermore, when I look at my post (from Opera) in the 'Hammer' thread ... there's no 'red x' .... just a blank space above my caption ...

I can still see the pic (no prob)  when I click on the link in Firefox, however !

"Curioser, and curiouser" !

Aha !

I've 'sort of' solved this one myself .... after some experimentation.

I don't pretend to understand all this stuff about 'Apache' servers, and the like ..... but I get the idea that this pic is generally 'off limits' seeing as how just about every browser delivers these unwelcoming message.

Anyhows I know in the past I've messed with firefox settings to try to get additional anonymity. One of these was 'hide referrer'. See this link:

http://center.uniformserver.com/uniserver/http_referer_problem.html

Anyway, I went back into my Firefox browser, brought up the console with 'about:config' ... and did indeed find I had set it to 0 at some stage ( '2' is default). When I changed it back .... I was no longer able to see that pic in Firefox. I have since returned it to '0'.

I suspect this hide referrer gets you around such security measures ??

Somebody more technical can explain it better, I'm sure.

Appears they are blocking off-site links, you could probably see it because your browser was still returning a referrer to them, saying you had visited their site already, or maybe it recognized your IP.

^
That sort of explains how I was able to go back after I'd reset it back to zero (hide my referrer ?) ... but not how I could see it in the first place.

Still, I doubt (hope) this won't be a common occurrence, since Philip indicated he'd not seen that in a while .....

Surprise, I get a red x too for my sig and I don't even know half of what you all know, in other words can't experiment on my own.  uh...help???

Don't know why that should be. Probably a temporary thing, maybe to do with this site .... since Phil had a prob earlier with the Kitty kaption thread .. which is now OK.

I see your sig. just fine .... it was uploaded to imageshack. Can't see why there should be any prob. Maybe others can confirm ?

I haven't changed that url in my sig (or altered it), but when I click on your link it shows 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage'.

I did ask others, but no answer yet.

Well, I have just gone into my Opera browser to look at your sig line. Admittedly, it was blank for 5-10 seconds .... but then it appeared.  So, I'd say the probs. at your end. Perhaps something's changed in your setup recently. Might be worth trying a 'System Restore' back to a couple of days ago (assuming you've got  Windows XP)?  I note Howard said in another thread he had no prob seeing your sig !

Subject: Re: Red 'x' displayed instead of Pic

Written By: Green Lantern on 01/23/08 at 8:31 am

Hang on ....not so fast on that 'system restore'. Following my post, your sig line disappeared. This system can act weirdly ! I know when I've updated my sig line in the past, it often takes 5-10 mins for the results to be correctly  displayed. What's going on with you ... is a bit of a mystery. I see my own sig OK.  Sometimes, pressing the 'refresh' / reload buttons (top of screen) several times ... can produce the desired result as far as seeing the current info.

an image that is linked to another site will not reference the inthe00s servers, it goes straight to the site where the image is hosted.  the problem appears to be at imageshack.  if you've seen the image before it might still be in your browsers cache which is why you see it, but others might not see it because the site has a problem right now and it can't fetch the item for the first time.

Right ... I think I've digested that. How does 'imageshack' stack up against other sites ? Is it more problematic ? I think some use photobucket, and other such sites ?

that I couldn't answer... I know those sites are popular, so it could just be a temporary hickup.

Computers ... just great.  >:(    You THINK you're getting on top of them .... but the whole deal is just TOO complex for the average 'joe' to get a handle on.

There's a lot of 'school of hard knocks' / experience required to work out where the problem may lie !

This is a job for Sherlock Holmes. Something along the line of eliminating, eliminating .. and that which remains ... must be the answer.

sorry, I meant to do it last night when I got home, because I couldn't see the problem you were having when I was at work.  Today I had to watch Neal from sun up to sun down, and needless to say, I didn't get much time on the computer.  sorry.

as for your question, I think a lot of other people can answer it, so you needn't wait for me.

If you want your pictures resized, you have to use a graphics program to resize it.  Also, BMP extension files don't work well on the web, you need something that will save them as JPG or GIF or PNG.

I've made a stab at in in the more relevant thread ( How do I resize pics ?  ). Wasn't aware you'd posted since I was doing that .....
