What I mean by this is that is there a way you can stop a thread from popping up when you click "Show new replies to your post" besides deleting the posts that you've put on that thread?

Not unsubscribe, but you can ignore threads. Turning the feature on is quite convoluted and very well hidden.

First you have to go to your profile. The hover over "Modify Profile"  and click "Look and Layout". Under the drop down list beside "Show quick moderation as", make sure "checkboxes" is selected. Save by clicking "Change profile".

Now when you click "Show unread posts since last visit", there will be a checkbox beside each thread. Tick the checkbox on threads you want to ignore and click "ignore topics". Now the thread will no longer show up in the most recent posts list.
