It is with much regret to inform you that Tony Randall, co-star of TV's 'The Odd Couple' and the star of many Rock Hudson-Doris Day comedies, died in his sleep this morning. He was 84. He had appeared on many nighttime talk shows since Odd Couple and has been active in humanitarian activities. He is survived by his 34 year old wife and their two young children He will be missed. :\'(

Does anyone remember Love Sidney? ??? Then here you go.... ;)

110-minute US TV movie, Sidney Shorr: A Girl's Best Friend (screened in the USA on 1 February 1980 and in the UK by C4 on 23 August 1983). In this, Tony Randall - Felix Unger in The Odd Couple - played a lonesome 40-year-old homosexual commercial artist who meets a vivacious young actress, Laurie Morgan (played by Lorna Patterson), and ends up sharing his eight-room New York apartment with her, only to become shocked when she is impregnated by a man she does not love, and follows her term through to the delivery of a baby girl, Patti. Five years later, when Laurie wants out, to go to LA and marry, Sidney fights her in court for custody of the child he has helped to raise, the judgement giving him summer access to the young girl (played by Kaleena Kiff).

This was the starting-off point for the weekly sitcom. Laurie (now played by Swoosie Kurtz - actually her real name) has left her husband and returned to New York to share, with Patti, Sidney's apartment. However, and this is the crux of this sitcom's problem, Sidney is no longer gay - indeed, his sexuality is no longer referred to any which way. NBC executives, while content (just about, one suspects) to feature a gay lead character in a single TV movie bowed to the great moral majority and were not so keen to portray one in a weekly primetime series. Without this gay-man/heterosexual-woman axis the essence of the series was gone. Sure, the prim Sidney still mothered his two females, Laurie continued the cutting remarks and Patti was the kind of wisecracking pig-tailed brat usually seen in US sitcoms, but that was all.

It saddens me to hear of this loss.  I thought he was absolutely hysterical on the "ODD COUPLE".  Wow...his wife was only 34...

I'm afraid you don't have to worry about Jack for much longer. He'll be joining Randall in Heaven just as Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are now together. I'm surprised he's lasted this long.

RIP Tony Randall.

The Odd Couple was one of my guilty pleasures.
As Howard mentioned, Love Sidney was based on a movie in which the lead character was gay.  I never saw either the film or the TV show, but the TR obits said the TV show character was only implicitly gay, like Mr. Belvedere.
However, people always said of The Odd Couple, "Ha! I know what that's REALLY about!"

I nver saw The Tony Randall Show either.  They hurried that one on after OC was cancelled in 1975.  Randall played "a stuffy Philadelphia judge," but the show only lasted a few seasons.

I remember when he married that woman fifty years his junior.  If you become a father at 77 and 78, you can't really expect to see the kids graduate from high school.  One can't really be prepared emotionally for the death of a spouse, but I'm sure the made generous provisions for those kids...but you never know.

I thought he was really funny in the Woody Allen film "Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex(But Were Afraid To Ask)."

First off...I'm sad that he's gone....next....I'm happy that he was able to find himself a "Gold-digger" especially at his age...but I must say that I feel bad for those kids...."My dad was older than "Dirt" and my mom just wanted to get rich off him" ::)  IE: Anna-Nicole :P

The news quoted his wife as saying that she never met a nicer man in her life.  That seems kind of a strange thing to say about a spouse, don't you think?  I mean, you'd think she would be overcome with grief if she really loved the guy.  A nice man?  Sounds like the way you'd describe a next door neighbor.

Are you saying that there's no such thing as a nice man unless he lives next door? ::)

No that's not what I'm saying! What I meant is that you'd think she'd say something showing more emotion than that.  Even if she only wanted people to believe that she really loved the guy.

I know you're right, RockandRollFan. It's just a shame that she did that, you know what I mean?  Not that I should be sainted by any means, but I could never marry for money, it's just so cold.

I remember him most for "The Odd Couple". I like a good tele comedy where its characters are kept within their economic means -- meaning it's more honest. Too many sitcoms let their characters go outside those means and get into too much fantasy. Look at what happened to "Taxi".

Felix Unger: "Oh, Oscar, Oscar, Oscar..." :-\\

This is very sad news. I used to love watching the Odd Couple. I have to say though, that my favorite character was Oscar (No, I'm Not a slob), I just thought Felix was too annoying!

I'm afraid this is another example of how low celebrity women's (and celeb everyone's) standards have fallen, if this is true. Nacy Morgan didn't shed a tear when her ex-husband, John Ritter died (or it wasn't reported), and Mary Bono seem to recover quickly after the death of her husband Sonny and took his seat in the House. (I'm still leery about how Cher really feels.) Ever since Anna Nicole Smith proved that marrying rich dying old men can be profitable, the widow's have been laughing all the way to the bank.

True.  It's a shame that women marry for money.  I see it EVERYDAY here at work...just on a LOWER level.  Women here brag about "finding " a doctor...a lawyer...entrepreneur...politician..etc...  It amazes how these same women look down upon prostitutes and escorts.   I feel that THESE women do the exact same thing but in a different ...MORE polished way.

What ever happened to falling in "love"???

Hey, it ain't easy out there.  I know this better than anybody.  I've got a double whammy.
1. I'm not tall, I'm short.
2. I've got no money.
You can be, as I am, intelligent, handsome, interesting...sensitive, but if you don't measure up in the two areas I've itemized, you might as well be the Elephant Man.
I'm not bitter or nothin,' I'm just saying... ;)

Anyway, even a cynic like me is surprised how little credit you're giving Tony Randall's widow.  Maybe she is a gold-digger, but maybe she married him because he was a charmer and a sweetheart.  I don't watch all that celebrity BS on "E" and so forth, so maybe you guys know something I don't.
As for her not being visably aggrieved, he was 84 and sick for the past 6 months.  Couldn't call it unexpected.  Perhaps the spouses of celebrities adopt a public facade.  They hold their composure in front of the camera and grieve privately.
