Subject: Hogan's Heroes General Burkhalter Passes Away

Written By: LyricBoy on 06/04/05 at 5:09 pm

I just saw on the web that Leon Askin, who played hilarious Nazi General Burkhalter on Hogan's Heroes, passed away in Vienna yesterday.   :\'(

Apparently the Hogan's Heroes curse continues.  First Bob Crane (Hogan) passed away unexpectedly, then John Banner (Sgt. Schultz), Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink), Larry Hovis (Carter), and Howard Caine (Major Hochstetter).

Leon's birth name was Leo Aschkenasy, and he fled Europe during WW2 to escape persecution.  He was so well recognized that kids would walk up to him and say "Klink! Klink!"   ;D

RIP, Leon.  You did it right.   :)

Hogan's Heroes. I sooo like that show.

Question: Why would the kids say "Klink! Klink!" to "General Burkhalter"?

Looks like all of the German characters on the show have gone to greener pastures. Pretty soon, the only survior the show's going to have is Richard Dawson. :(

Perhaps that's what he was always saying to Klink in the show?

Kinch, Washington, and LeBeau are still with us, as are Helga and Hilda.  :)

Probably too late for a reunion show though.  :-\\

Your eyes are way apart, you're blue, and you got a big nose, but you may be right.
