The man sang with such energy. He put his whole soul into his songs.

If things are right, he's up dancing with his father right now, somewhere.

Wow, that's really sad. I heard that he wasn't doing too well somewhat recently, but that's still a shock and no less saddening - R.I.P. Luther. :(

Even though I wasn't that big a fan of "Dance with My Father" for the song's sound itself (which I heard, actually was about the death of his dad some time back), it was one of those ones that really touched me in its words.

Not only is it about things he remembered from when he was a kid, but the qualities in both his parents and what he loved about his dad - we can all relate to that.

He had a few songs I've always liked. "Here and Now" is just a sweet and pretty love song - timeless. "Love Power" was a more funky pop hit from the early 90's, and "Stop to Love" is great upbeat pop, even if it was different from his usual R & B style.

I even recall seeing him regularly appear on a VH1 special called "Soul of VH1" (hosted by Vanessa Williams) in the 1991-92 time frame.

I just found out about this a few minutes ago, as I was signing on line. Poor guy; he was only 54...about seven months older than my mom (who will be 54 this November). :\'(

Here's the story I found.

I liked Luther best back in the '80s when he weighed about 300 lbs. In the '90s he just started sounding like a bad imitation of himself. But that's just my opinion.
His songs
"The Glow of Love" (with the group Change) in 1981, and
"I Wanted Your Love" from 1983 were my favorites by him.

And didn't he sing backup on David Bowie's "Young Americans" ??

I knew he was seriously ill, in and out of hospital. This is very sad news.

Yeah I was gutted when I heard that new on the radio this morning - I love his voice and he seemed like a lovely human being - such a sad loss.
Tragic too that his hit last year "Dance With My Father" was about him reminiscing about his childhood days and his dad dying when Luther was only 7, and clearly desperately wishing that he was still alive to be with.  :\'( (yeah I can related to that)

Very, very sad, but not totally unexpected due to his fragile state of health in recent years...

But a superb singer who will be sadly missed...

The 'soul crowd' over here will always remember his big club anthem from '83 ('Never Too Much') and his groundbreaking and classic '86 album ('Give Me The Reason')...

I'm in agreement with zcrito - his later stuff became a little too 'saccharine'...

And didn't he sing backup on David Bowie's "Young Americans" ??

He did...before his well-deserved solo fame, he was a much-in-demand session singer...

I bet this July 4th weekend, they're going to have a Luther Vandross tribute.

I wonder how many old school soul singers are left? :(
