Subject: Bob Denver

Written By: Mushroom on 09/06/05 at 3:02 pm

Well, we lost another great actor.

Bob Denver, best known as "Gilligan" died on Friday.  He has been in poor health for a while now, having quadruple bypass surgery earlier this year, as well as having his voice box removed due to cancer.

Bob was 70.

To most people, hw eill be remembered as Gilligan, but to me he will always be Maynard G. Krebs.

Of course, everybody knows that Maynard was named after his Aunt.  And that the G. stood for "Walter".

Well there is something we agree on.  I loved Gilligan, but Maynard G. Krebs will always be first in my heart.  I always think of Maynard when I see a building being taken down(the old Endicott Building)  :\'(

I'm not old enough to have watched the Gilligan first run, but like every other kid in my generation, I enjoyed watching Gilligan's Island episodes in rerun, time and time again.
Gilligan with his orange shirt, his sailor's cap, and his awkward comic disposition is still one of the most recognizable figures on the pop culture landscape.
I was a little older before I started seeing Dobie Gillis reruns, with Denver's Maynard G. Krebs.  Krebs was suburban America's favorite beatnik!
The loss of Denver is as sad as the loss of John Ritter a couple of years ago.  A funny man who kept us company on TV is gone.
So long Bob, you done a great job!

RIP Bob.  You rocked, little buddy.  8)

It seems like there is a curse on the Gilligan's Island cast.  The skipper passed awayy, as well as, Mr and Mrs Howell, and now Gilligan.  I guess a reunion show is now completely out of the question.

I admit I never saw "Dobie Gillis", so I'm partial to "Gilligan". Bob Denver was one of the funniest physical slapstick actors in televsion history. He usually talked fast, which made him all the funnier. He will be missed, especially now when we need a good laugh. :\'(

I loved Gilligans Island when I was a kid..... But I must admit, I would have kicked Gilligans a** if I was the Skipper.... That show was awesome, reminds me of when I was a kid and we couldnt afford cable.... I watched that show all the time!  I think Gilligans Island would make and AWESOME Video Gaming machine in A City or the casinos... RIP BOB!!!

There already is one.  It was made years ago, and has Bob Denver and the other surviving cast members of the time doing voices for it.  Here is a clip from an article about it in 2003:

A clutch of suited dignitaries, standing beneath a makeshift thatched roof of dried palm fronds, don floppy white sailor caps on cue as a band blares the “Gilligan’s Island” theme song. One of them, Kenny C. Guinn, the governor of Nevada, is struggling to retain his dignity as he shares a spotlight with Gilligan, the Professor and Mary Ann – the actors Bob Denver, Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells – during the opening ceremony of the gambling industry’s big annual trade show, held here earlier this month.

There was also a pinball game made after the series.

Only 3 castaways left. I just signed Russell Johnson's guestbook, expressing my condolences.

Hey Mushroom......is that Mr. "Trust me, I know what I'm doing" Sledge Hammer occupying your avatar space now? Gawd, I miss that show.

Yep, it sure enough is!  Good eye!

I wanted to change my avatar, and decided I wanted one of the classic poses of Sledge, holding his gun upright.  In looking, I found this one.  Because of the American Flag, I knew that this is the one I wanted instead.

I miss the show also.  Another show that was ahead of it's time.  I am sure that if it came out today, it would be a hit.  Just like "Police Squad", it was not understood fully until after it was gone.

Does anybody know why neither Tina Louise nor Russel Johnson were interviewed in the aftermath of Bob Denver's death?  ???

All the interviews I saw only had Mary Ann .  :-\\

It's hardly a curse.  They were all old, that show was on 40 years ago.  Bob Denver really wasn't old though, he was pretty young (in relative terms) at the age of 70.  70 is actually too young to die, the man still had a good 10-20 years left on him ideally.  Anyone that dies before they reach their late 70s has gone early.   So this is shockingly sad that Bob Denver passed away prematurely.    :(

I think he was the youngest one too.

Russell Johnson, aka "The Proffessor" is currently well lived at the age of 81.  Dawn Wells and Tina Louise are both alive and well too.
