Subject: Jazz bassist Art Davis dies at 73

Renowned double bassist Art Davis, who played with John Coltrane and other jazz greats, has died aged 73.

The musician died at home last week after a heart attack, his son Kimaili Davis told the Los Angeles Times.

As well as playing for Thelonious Monk, Bob Dylan and Louis Armstrong, Davis was a psychologist and balanced gigs with appointments to see patients.

Musicians like Art Davis made "jazz" what we think of as "jazz."  You might not know his name, but you've snapped your fingers to his basslines!  When the late Coltrane's contemporaries die, there is no one to replace them.  That is, there certainly are great jazz musicians in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, but they can never again make jazz what it was.  We're seeing the end of an era.
